Buxtehude, Passacaglia in D Minor, BuxWV 161

- Leon W. Couch III plays the Passacaglia in D Minor, BuxWV 161, by Dieterich Buxtehude on the 69-rank Schantz organ in Shattuck Auditorium at Carroll University on October 7, 2012, as part of a lecture-recital on musical rhetoric of the 17th century. Notice the historical fingering: This fingering is convenient in this music.
The stop changes are intended to reflect the affection and serve the interests of the audience listening in this specific venue--not registrations for people who passed away several centuries ago. This is a rhetorical approach: We adjust what we do as the performer to suit the audience. It is a-historical to play things without consideration of the audience.
Also, please note that these registration changes really are no problem for a performer on a true historic organ. I've played these there of course and can pull all my own stops with very little effort.
So, I hope listeners will accept that informed artists can still be creative musicians.
Please forgive a few moments. In real performances, human beings are rarely perfect.

Sara Shooga actually, many of the ARMYs here are complimenting the song and the way this player is performing it. We ain’t rude
Iced tae._ exactly. The only ones bringing in the negativity are those other people.
@@_.soymilk i love reading the comment section now. I know we ain't rude despite the big fandom majority of us are actually more mature and are intellectuals.

우와 다들 데미안 읽고 이거 듣는거 대박이다.. 헤르만 헤세는 몇세기 이후에도 이 노래를 찾아보게 만드네.. 나도 이제서야 찾아보게됐는데 절대 후회하지 않는다..
Yes, the ancient music is reserved purely and wholly.
데미안 읽다 찾아봤어요 ㅎㅎ
I WAS READING DEMIAN AND WTF PLEASE MY BRAIN
When your an German army and live near Buxtehude 🙆🏻 Love this masterpiece so much

Oh hey ich wohne auch nicht sooooo weit von Buxtehude entfernt haha 🙆🏻
Ja man
Ich wohne zwar ganz im Süden aber ich kenne jemanden die in Buxtehude wohnt...
Vor drei Jahren war hier schon jemand Deutsches... The saga continues.
It took me 3 years to find this lol ......He too was a tempter.. he too was a link to the second.....
...evil world with which he no longer wanted to have anything to do.
Lol, it took me a little bit more, since 2016 until now 2021
I admit I came to this through BTS. But as someone who is quite interested in classical music and music with dark themes, I believe this piece is absolutely beautiful, it has an amazing feeling of both a vampire-esque atmosphere and a feeling of.. Maybe calmness? I'm not sure... Thank you, Leon Couch.
I finally found it! I swear... I've been searching for so long haha, ever since I heard Blood Sweat and Tears for the first time, and when I actually got around to reading Demian. Thank you BTS for introducing me to these wonderful pieces of history and culture.
Thank u Hermann Hesse for introducing us to this
I would never find this masterpiece if I never heard "Blood Sweat and Tears"..
'Blood, sweat and tears' from BTS brought me to this masterpiece, thank you bangtan for introducing me to such beautiful pieces
I am still here to unsolve the stories of BTS. but I am finally here and I am totally enjoying this.
oh I believe in no god but love great music and respect ancient creations.
if anyone after me wants to criticize about this music related to BTS then forget it child, you were too late for this amazing creativity.
Demian is not just a character it is something that is within you and now as I read the book I understand it. Thank you for this wonderful video. Much appreciated!!
This piece was written over 300 years ago.
demian is all of us...
the first half is the intro, second is about how his life was like heaven, the third how his life changed by the threats and meeting Damien and the third about how he realizes a lot. I dont want to spoil more but read the book for more! ;)
Ahhhh ive been looking for the book for 2 years now and i still cant find one.. Do you know where i can Get a pdf

Luther's most famous quote on music is this, "Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music."
All of this music helps us perceive the magnificent nature of music and the glory as a member of our program.
We marvel when we hear organ music in which one man can perform like a group of people.
The piano sounds exactly the one that Yoongi used in BST Asdf ;-; i wish i could play the piano
ChogiBaek and Suga Kookies with Tae it's an organ
ChogiBaek and Suga Kookies with Tae it sounds the same because he played it in D minor as well and he tuned it to sound like that because that's how to original piece sounds
Lol thanks guys~
its in a different key though.
ChogiBaek and Suga Kookies with Tae this certainly is not a piano it's a completely different class of instrument it's wind instrument an organ. While a piano is a percussion instrument.
This is so beautiful, it starts off so eerie, and then transforms into such a hopeful melodic tune. Bless BTS for introducing me to this masterpiece, but bless you and your skilful hands
I started taking organ lessons in 2018 and this piece has always been my dream to play after hearing it in the BST mv. I’m learning it now and it’s a lot more difficult than it sounds, but I’m determined to finish it by the end of the year!
I'm truly honored and happy that you were inspired to take organ lessons. This is one of many, many wonderful pieces by Buxtehude and others--some dramatic and subtle, like this one. I'm curious where you are taking lessons
I think environment is quite significant.
so how is your progress ?
Where do you take the lessons?
I have an urge to take organ lessons too, but I'm afraid I won't be able to..
From one simple melody, while three, four,or five other vary voices play and trip lustily around the voice that sings its simple melody.
I close my eyes I imagine you playing the organ in the cathedral, while I am sitting on the stairs listens to this melody.
Here because of Bangtan & the storyline of Damian
I'm going to play this for yoongi
It is the organ piece that SUGA performed in "Blood sweat & tears" although it is only part of it but it is this piece.
Blood sweat & tears has references to the German novel "Demian" by writer Herman Hesse, also to the movie "chat room" and the bible.
It is the human heart that composes music, and the music shows the human heart world.good!
Passacaglia & Fugue from Buxtehude inspired Bach to write his own Passacaglia & Fugue D Minor BWV 582, at only 22 y.o. , and is today a Masterpiece. J.S. Bach has learned a lot from Telemann and Buxtehude
uh, BWV 582 is in c minor, not d, with all due respect:)
Music director can tell you their difference. I would say the former is a creator, significantly brave pioneer !
@@ivansantrizos8483 Though I admit, BWV 582 does have a suprisingly regal feel to it when played at d-minor in the tempo of this peice.
...complete with magnificent double fugue
If you're confused why there are a lot of BTS stan (ARMYs) here, it's because BTS used this exact piece in one of their music video (Blood Sweat and Tears). Demian is heavily used in their music video/songs.
We are so thankful to you, Dr. Couch, for providing your musical services. We couldn't have asked for anything more. Although we like to visit us, we know it is very expensive.
Every one, who’s ever cared for anyone would, please, care like this for them.
About organ music, is a precious performance, worthy, and costly treasure given to Taiwan from America.
We want you to know how much we appreciate your time and talent.
This is the best performance I have ever heard.
I'm reading Demian :) I love all Hesse's works

Soviet Russia carried forward French culture to the extreme.
Ballet was invented by Louis 14th.
He not only invented ballet.
This King also uses Bach’s music to make a dance called pasakalia
Louis 14th
Although on the guillotine,
but his contribution to art
different from ordinary people.
It is actually a great artist.
This is how he invented these two dances.
once upon a time,
He saw a maid,
walking in and tiptoe up.
It may be because his servant has foot meningitis, hahaha
Later he ordered all the maids
while serving,
all should walk on tiptoe like this.
Then everyone put on music
so called ballet.
As far as he listened to the music of the German Bach, jeg danced.
Because after he listened Bach,
he suddenly created a style, that he can dance.
So, he invented German music for dancing, passagalia.
This kind of hand and foot dance is the passakalia dance of the court nobles.
Louis XVI, he is really a great artist.
Although he is a tyrant,
everyone has no food to eat.
Only the nobles could eat well.
But his contribution to art,
really could be better than other artists’ contributions.
Two more dancing styles to come to the world.
Because it is created by two creative orders.
Very entertaining performance which we enjoyed immensely.
We were extremely pleased with the quality of your performance and quality of the music.
it took me 5 years to find this from the blood sweat tears mv...
damn i am hooked now
Thank you so much for your loving devotion to providing our class and Temple and churches with your beautiful music many years.
Parfait !!
Buxtehude a dû avoir le frisson en vous écoutant ...
Merci !

This is beautiful! Makes every scene magical...
Youthful Chimchim, yeah, it is because the details, varieties and immersion. Dreaming-like.

Bless you, professor and director of music. Please keep it up.
We hold you in high esteem.
Prof. Leon, thank you, I had printed your works and my students think it is really overwhealmly powerful to sustain Taiwanese confidence, due to which is better than most empires that colonised Taiwan. In fact, my wisdom and intellect is not pressed anymore. I, the best writer without publishing too much now.
I like this simple melody wonderfully with complex variations. The fuge artistic musical effects, thus reminding us of a heavenly dance.
Musica stupenda l organo e meraviglioso la musica scende nell' anima e dona serenità e gioia al cuore grazie ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊❤❤❤❤❤

Thank you, organist. You are amazing.
The roon lights up wherever you make music. I want to let you know how much I appreciate everything you do. I look forward to the hyms every day when you are at the organ.
whoa, this is a masterpiece! Amazing!
Hi, Ya nyaa , yeah, this is very original or, ancient creation of organ price in early stage, by Buxhutede. Lots of musicians turned out to be even more famous than him (from views of professional outsiders) by following his styles. The most typically and classically standardized playing, by Dr. Couch.
Thank you for being such an inspiration to me from your organ performance.I hope I can follow in your footstep, from which you make peace of the world.
The music blew me away. Because it sounds so good
Thank you, praise you,you are teaching as organ art to the world.
The song is so wonderful.
Informed artists can be creative musicians, too ...that was an awesome true quote ✌
A million thanks to you for your music. It's meant so much to me. Just wanted to send you a "note" to show my appreciation
for you.
I appreciate how well you can play organs. Your talent amazes me.
You have a magnificent ear for harmonies and the beautiful blending of notes.
The sound of this piano is both light and gentle, and the pianist is very talented
It is an organ, and an organist, not piano❤
Keyboard player
This music makes people very relaxed, I like it very much
Empecé a leer el libro Demian ya que siempre me llamó la atención por el hecho de que las teorías del álbum de BTS "WINGS" se basaran en ese libro, llegué a la parte en que Pistorius tocaba en el órgano este tema. Decidí buscarlo para ver si había algo relacionado y AHHHH ES LO MISMO QUE TOCA YOONGI EN BS&T casi lloro,me re emocioné!
This song is beautiful
A beautiful song .I hope everyone will listen to this song.
"Song?" I don't hear any human voices...
Меня, как и многих авторов комментариев, привёл к этой музыке роман Г. Гессе "Демиан" / my way to this music - the novel by G. Hesse "Demian"
Your music can soothe the soul and make people feel happy
This video and performance is awesome.
The music is so beautiful. I love this music so much. I like it.
Thank you for playing for the world. I love listening to your music.
That's amazing, I can't control my emotion.
