Buxtehude, Passacaglia in D Minor, BuxWV 161

  • Leon W. Couch III plays the Passacaglia in D Minor, BuxWV 161, by Dieterich Buxtehude on the 69-rank Schantz organ in Shattuck Auditorium at Carroll University on October 7, 2012, as part of a lecture-recital on musical rhetoric of the 17th century. Notice the historical fingering: This fingering is convenient in this music.
The stop changes are intended to reflect the affection and serve the interests of the audience listening in this specific venue--not registrations for people who passed away several centuries ago. This is a rhetorical approach: We adjust what we do as the performer to suit the audience. It is a-historical to play things without consideration of the audience.
Also, please note that these registration changes really are no problem for a performer on a true historic organ. I've played these there of course and can pull all my own stops with very little effort.
So, I hope listeners will accept that informed artists can still be creative musicians.
Please forgive a few moments. In real performances, human beings are rarely perfect.

Soviet Russia carried forward French culture to the extreme.
Ballet was invented by Louis 14th.
      He not only invented ballet.
This King also uses Bach’s music to make a dance called pasakalia
      Louis 14th
      Although on the guillotine,
      but his contribution to art
      different from ordinary people.
It is actually a great artist.
This is how he invented these two dances.
      once upon a time,
      He saw a maid,
      walking in and tiptoe up.
It may be because his servant has foot meningitis, hahaha
Later he ordered all the maids
      while serving,
all should walk on tiptoe like this.
      Then everyone put on music
      so called ballet.
As far as he listened to the music of the German Bach, jeg danced.
      Because after he listened Bach,
he suddenly created a style, that he can dance.
So, he invented German music for dancing, passagalia.
This kind of hand and foot dance is the passakalia dance of the court nobles.
Louis XVI, he is really a great artist.
      Although he is a tyrant,
everyone has no food to eat.
Only the nobles could eat well.
      But his contribution to art,
really could be better than other artists’ contributions.
Two more dancing styles to come to the world.
Because it is created by two creative orders.

Hi, Ya nyaa , yeah, this is very original or, ancient creation of organ price in early stage, by Buxhutede. Lots of musicians turned out to be even more famous than him (from views of professional outsiders) by following his styles. The most typically and classically standardized playing, by Dr. Couch.

Гессе "Демиан" / my way to this music - the novel by G. Hesse "Demian"
