Reminds me of what Ethan Hawke once said about awards: "If there weren't awards, then the only thing that would be a priority for studios and producers is money. Because awards exist, there is an incentive for Studios and Producers to want to make something of artistic merit. There are plenty of great movies that only got financing because they thought "oh, we could win some awards with this thing!"

@@patrickdmuzangi9639 yes. i heard some guy saying that films like Roma or the Favorite are boring and anyone can make a boring movie, but what takes real art is to make movies that leave us glued to the seat. That sentiment, apart from being wrong, is sad, and sadly that's the direction the industry and mainstream cinema in general are going towards - awarding schlock movies that don't actually say anything through cinemas artistic means, but just portray stories that keep us entertained. The box office, money and popularity is already more than films like black panther deserve. They don't need to muddle up the awards that are supposed to reward the amazing artistic work of real cinematographers. Studio made blockbusters have no business standing next to true works of art. Roma, The Favorite and You were never really here will be talked about and brought up in film classes for years to come, while stuff like Green Book or whatever are just flavor of the month. Much like in science, we have to look towards what is advancing the art form, what is breaking new grounds and doing things we haven't seen a thousand times before. These are the films that deserve praise. Bad or not, award shows matter because for many people they will indicate quality, and we can't afford to snub better movies to appeal to wider audiences.
Last year was the last time I watched the Oscars. I didn't even turn on the tv last night, and I bet that audiences for it keep dwindling... they are so out of touch to even figure out why, trying to reward popularity, they don't understand it's because of making the show about politics rather than filmmaking and rewarding mediocrity... Also not streaming it online. Right now, the academy is a joke in my eyes, but I will keep watching the movies I like, regardless of them.
