I hardly get to watch but a small portion of the movies that were released all year but when the Academy nominates a film that is clearly a social statement, it makes me think all other films nominated are just overrated. I have lost a lot of respect for the Academy in the last few years.
Exactly! I was waiting for someone to point this out. Every damn time we get a nomination now, I can't help but wonder how radical the film is. Film gurus love to watch the nominated films before the Oscars come on, but being a guru myself, I'd rather stick to the oldies. I want to see a story being told in a unique way, not another movie showing me how political it's all getting.

I too share your opinion on Widows being snubbed from at least a couple nominations. Cinematography was superb and the story was thrilling and somewhat innovative. Looks like they have to go thru their well known agenda which didn't include McQueen this time like he did back in 2014.
I agree fully with what you said about Bohemian Rhapsody, it felt so controlled by the band. It was dull, I had more fun and chills watching Queen's documentals.

VFX Todd roma was a great movie. The cinematography was incredible and so well made. for you to feel like the movie was repetitive was kinda on purpose. Its so raw you literally get a glimpse of life, and our everyday lives are pretty repetitive

That sentiment,apart from being wrong, is sad, and sadly that's the direction the industry and mainstream cinema in general are going towards - awarding schlock movies that don't actually say anything through cinemas artistic means, but just portray stories that keep us entertained. The box office, money and popularity is already more than films like black panther deserve. They don't need to muddle up the awards that are supposed to reward the amazing artistic work of real cinematographers. Studio made blockbusters have no business standing next to true works of art. Roma, The Favorite and You were never really here will be talked about and brought up in film classes for years to come, while stuff like Green Book or whatever are just flavor of the month. Much like in science, we have to look towards what is advancing the art form, what is breaking new grounds and doing things we haven't seen a thousand times before. These are the films that deserve praise. Bad or not, award shows matter because for many people they will indicate quality, and we can't afford to snub better movies to appeal to wider audiences. I didn't even turn on the tv last night, and I bet that audiences for it keep dwindling... they are so out of touch to even figure out why, trying to reward popularity, they don't understand it's because of making the show about politics rather than filmmaking and rewarding mediocrity... Also not streaming it online. Right now, the academy is a joke in my eyes, but I will keep watching the movies I like, regardless of them.

Black Panther isn't going to win, but I'm still happy to see it nominated. My hope is that it encourages big studios to try more with major releases and put as much effort into each tentpole release that Coogler and co did for BP so that we get a more diverse range of Best Picture nominees.

Diversity should play no part in what gets nominated. The best movies and craftspeople should be nominated, regardless of their race or gender. I'll admit that non-white people and women don't get the same number of opportunities in the film industry as their white and male counterparts, but that's a separate issue.

The letterboxd community awards results and nominations were so much better. A true film loving community's votes and they came out really good.

I agree. I watched it for 1 hour and I just couldn't take it. Nothing much happened in an hour. Movie is way overrated.
