    Thanks for this, it's a great idea. Anyone who has dealt with the headaches of replacing an i3 battery (bricked car, needing to register battery via BimmerLink, etc.) will benefit from changing out the battery pre-emptively. What's amazing is that this super-technological electric vehicle doesn't monitor the 12V battery itself and give advice as to when to replace the battery. My 2011 Acura is far less advanced but warned me when my battery was failing!

    This is great advice for all EV owners since all use the standard battery for basics, Tesla included.

      Yep- I watch this gauge all the time & used it to pull the trigger for a full test of the 12v battery, for replacement. Also, It's more obvious if I'm not driving around enough to keep it fully charged. Thx for the feedback!

    I just discovered your channel a few minutes ago. Great job on the videos, btw! Where did you buy that device and what is the name of it?

      I leave mine plugged in all the time. The car turns off the 12v plugs after 15-20 minutes anyways. I've had it in for ~4 years straight. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

    Does the 12V battery charge when the car is charged ? I have a problem with my car after not having used it for a while and there's not enough charge on the 12V battery got the car to turn on. So I am wondering now whether plugging in the 120 V charger will bring it back to life. Or would I have to try to take the 12V battery out and charge it separately with a special charger?

    • @bmwi3diy782
      @bmwi3diy782  Před rokem

      I think it should charge the 12V if you can get access to the charge port door. Per the manual, 'after several minutes the vehicle is slightly charged. The onboard electronics are ready again. It is again possible to open the vehicle." If you have a voltmeter gauge as shown, the system voltage will jump up to around 14.5 volts when the car is actively charging the 12V AGM battery (or if your are driving around). If this is not happening, then there is a problem. I hope this helps!

    I tried something like this and it showed 12.0 while my multimeter showed 12.9 :/

      Mine has been pretty accurate (maybe not all models are created equal or quality control issue), but I did notice that if the device is not making good contact in the socket, there can be a discrepancy. Try cleaning the contacts and see if it makes a difference. I just purchased an Ohmmu lithium 12V with a built-in bluetooth monitor/ I will be testing it soon & post the results.

      @@bmwi3diy782 sounds good, what got me looking at this is wanting to see what was going on with a dash cam as it would stay running for around 13 mins after leaving the car if I didn't lock it.. I got that down to under 3 mins with bimmercode but would still like it to turn off straight away unless it was showing 14+ so wasn't draining the 12volt. I might have to check if power from the rain sensor shuts off straight away instead.
