- An unbiased review of the Brand NEW Premier Inn at Keswick! The hotel has only been open 4 weeks and we booked into a Premier Inn Plus Room for a birthday treat for me. We check out the hotel, the room, the staff, the eating facilities, the parking and location and as always I gave my full and honest opinion of what I think and what we see.

We love that Wetherspoons in Keswick,(the old Courthouse), we always stop there for lunch when in the area. The chippy opposite is nice too. Fab video 😊

Appreciate the honesty and love your vids. Premier Inns are good but so generic, I work away a lot and if I am in a Premier I know I will have a comfy bed but also its always apparent that the accountants run the place. Some good indies in Keswick, stayed in a few but the pick would be West View, fantastic rooms, breakfast, and a proper staffed check in. Parking on the road outside and very knowledgeable and chatty about the walks.

From my perspective, Inn should have extra stuff stan-by. It is always helpful to speak somebody in person.
Ah..Sorry about no solution about key card. The Limited access to restaurants, menu, ..
In US, the air-conditioned rooms are necessary . Each rooms are required air conditioner.

Totally agree Rachel and one thing we love about Premier Inn is being met by a nice friendly local person, who can not only check you in but give you loads of local knowledge as well. Hi Alan and Happy Birthday. Hope Mrs Metalman bought you some lovely Outdoor presents. So pleased you did this review, as we stay in Keswick frequently, usually in a cottage for a week, as my partner loves the town and shops. I love the Mountains.
Don't think I'll be staying there based on your review To be honest I was hoping it wouldn't get built, it spoils the look of Keswick for me and makes it even more crowded.
Looks like they've still got a number of teething problems too.

Great honest review Alan. So sorry that it was not that great from the start. Amazing that it took 3 staff members to try to cut your key. The small room with no bath was not so nice. Also I would hate.

Happy Birthday buddy! Nice review! I would hate to see the non-upgraded room. No customer service when you check in? That's a good sign for me to head somewhere else. The view from the room would have looked good if the weather was nice but then again, you would be out there if the weather was nice. 😂 cheers!
Yep the views were great, even in the bad weather but I always like to be checked in by a nice smiling face when we go to a hotel and hate having the hassle to try and self check in, especially when other people are waiting behind you. Oh, Alan. I am so sorry the Keswick Premier Inn was so disappointing, especially for your birthday. We don't normally stay there. I think I only stayed in a Premier Inn once, when I was doing National cross country in Nottingham. But I only needed a bed to sleep overnight. Stay in a cottage next time. Avoid this grim Premier Inn. And good on you for letting people know.

Not happy with the £10 to park situation with the Premier Inn at Keswick and also not happy with the self check in, one thing we have always previously found is a nice friendly face to check us in, something we missed at Keswick, cheers Alan
I live near Keswick and it's a nice hotel, good review and I think the reason why your orchard wasn't working was either because it didn't work for the right room or there was a fault with the system, that would be why you couldn't use the lift or stairs too.
Agree with you, we thought we had done the card correctly but obviously not, just a shame there was no staff that we could find to ask. I know it is a new hotel but I always say it as I see it and let others make up their own mind. We are both massive fans of Premier Inns and were really looking forward to this first ever visit, maybe we were expecting too much. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

Those key card machines sound like an absolute nightmare. Imagine trying to check in at 2am to have to deal with those. They sound like they were agreed in a meeting between technology salesmen and accountants - all about saving wages and nothing at all to do with customer service.
Agree 100% Andy, self check in, just like self check out in Tesco is a big no from me, I hate it, I want to be met by someone doing all of that for me, not getting stressed when nothing was working. Good of you to watch marra, cheers Alan
Definitely sounds like some kinks need to be worked out there. It's nice that they left you snacks for your bday, and the view from the room was nice.
Yes there were a few nice touches but overall we left disappointed, never had to pay £10 to park before, something that really got under my skin. Thanks very much for watching, cheers Alan

Look very nice inside but it’s only been open a month terminals to check in made it look like you were at the airport not in the centre of Keswick. Don’t think the other hotels in Keswick have anything to worry about 👍👍

Good balanced honest review there Alan, I work over in the lakes quite a lot, stayed at kendal premier in lots. It’s ok, nowt flash parking is ok and food has been pretty good. Hope ya had a good birthday all the best.

It was bucketing down when we went out for food but I did not dare use my car in case my space had gone when we came back. Wow the car park would have put me off straight away Alan. I never like the self check ins. You deffo need the human touch. I’m with you on a quieter place to sit and have a drink. Not good when you can’t even get a key coded, having no staff for issues arising is a bad start on there part.. a good honest review and yes Keswick prices and not many car parking spaces at a tenner a go 😂😂😂
Hopefully they can iron out these issues , obviously they have had to use the space carefully as it’s at a premium .

A really honest review. You could have slated the place, but you kept it balanced, pointing out the good parts and the bad parts. How can a new hotel have no staff members on reception? This is how things will be in the future - not just in hotels, but across all other businesses. Also, charging £10 to park, when you're staying at the place! I hope the powers that be see this video, it will hopefully persuade them to re-think their outlook in the future - but I doubt it. Well done, Alan - another good video.

I suppose keeping it small was a must, like you say they wouldn't have been able yo get into Keswick otherwise.
It did look to be fair quite nice, I'd definitely give it a try but the cost of parking and lack of spaces is a bit rubbish.
Nice looking room and view and that birthday surprise was a nice touch.

Ah what a shame, driven by that a few times as it was being built, never realising it was going to be a Premiere Inn until you mentioned it. Had real high hopes for this place. Spent the best part of twenty years whisking Jilly off to lovely £60 B&Bs or £80 very luxurious ones in Keswick to hike in the day and strut out to the Woodstone or Square Orange of a night. Post covid those prices have tripled, like many things we can’t justify it anymore. Particularly when we have discovered the beauty and reasonable cost of airbnb for the last few years. Really was hoping that the Premiere Inn would be an affordable return to Keswick that would herald our early courting years. Sigh, it is not. Jill would have probably left me if id had that many mishaps with the key cards, id still be ranting in 2033 about that.
Lovely views of Skiddaw and the rooms have all mod cons. It felt more like a city premiere inn than a country one. Everything really sacrificed due to size.
We’ll be doing the Travelodge in Penrith whenever possible. Especially since hearing Woodstone flame grill have opened a branch there. It is possible, on certain nights, when the moon is blue to get a room for under £30 a night still. Plus we know all the room numbers that are away from reception and at the end of corridors. Very silent sleeps!

My blood pressure kept clicking up a notch every time there was a mishap but I was determined not to let anything spoil this weekend, even when we got soaking wet, each time we went out for food. We loved the Woodstone and the Square Orange looked real good too, although it was packed when we looking in. I think no one was a winner with the Premier Inn at Keswick - the guest houses and other hotels who tried to block it and PI themselves, as this cannot be what they actually envisaged when they first tired to get planning permission. Way overpriced and far too small for us, so we will be looking elsewhere next time. Thanks so much for watching and the birthday wishes, cheers Alan
@@AlanMETALMAN such a shame. Its such a small site too. Without rail links I can’t see who it could possibly appeal to without adequate parking. Very badly thought out. I get upset when there is just one member of staff on check in duty, self check in would have me enraged! Ive had a glance at the prices and even mid week they look very steep.

Yes there was but not obvious when you come in from the back car park. You can plan things out how you like but it is only when customers start to use the facilities you find out if your plans are as you intended them or not, cheers Alan
Great honest review Alan. I have actually stayed in there myself and to be honest it's great if you're just turning up for some walking etc, but I would agree if you want come to relax and want to have a few days rather in and around keswick rather than 1 to 2 nights I would rather stay elsewhere.

Only stayed at a Premier Inn once, it was down in Derby. As they are a budget hotel chain, they obviously cut corners, such as staffing levels. It was quite nice, comfortable room with lovely bed, it was functional. If we want more we pay more. We go to Keswick twice a year and watched that hotel being built. We did think car parking would be an issue. Of course the Lodore Falls is at a different end of the spectrum altogether, enjoy.

Hey Alan, another great and honest review, love these hotel reviews you are doing, a really true reflection of your experiences. Oh dear with this one, nothing too positive to say about it at all and because you regularly use and praise the Cockermouth premier inn I feel that you would have been dissappointed to give this review but honesty is what we always want form these videos. I agree with all the comments that have been said already, lack of car parking and extra cost, key card issues, menu, staffing levels etc. I think the price is an issue also, I have looked online also and it seems quite expensive and there are better alternatives that we would go for. The Ladore Falls will be totally different, we have stopped for a dring or sandwich there a few times whilst walking around Derwent Water but never stayed. My wife would love to because that spa looks amazing to be fair. Looking forward to that one mate. Take care.

Really disappointed with the Keswick Premier inn and it has been booked since last October and been looking forward to it since then but what a let down. My son booked Lodore Falls for us as it is Mrs Metalman birthday at the end of August and she is super excited about that as I am, only one gripe, apparently even if you are a guest in the hotel, you have to pay extra to use the Spar facilities there, which I was surprised about. Either way, I am sure the rest will be great, cheers Alan
@@AlanMETALMAN Yes my wife said the same which is a negative as it is not cheap but I suppose it is a one off and you can't not try that spa out if you are staying. Would be nice to be in that outside pool at sunset I bet with the views. Really looking forward to your review on that one. Hi Alan, thank you very much for your honest and interesting review. It seemed like the new hotel was experiencing a few teething problems. My top thing is that the hotel is clean and comfortable, and the new Keswick Premier Inn certainly ticked those boxes. I would really not like the self check-in or the parking situation. They seemed like they tried to fit as many rooms as possible. Shame about the limited choice on the menu. I hope you still managed to enjoy your birthday weekend. You hit the nail right on the head, we are the same hate the self check in, and I really object to paying £10 to park in an already expensive (for a Premier Inn) hotel. It was an awful journey over the Moors to get there, in awful weather so I was a bit stressed when we got there but thinks went from bad to worse, especially when we had to go out to eat on the evening and next morning, each time getting a right soaking. Oh WOW! Alan I was truly wanting and expecting great reviews of this amazing Keswick Premier Inn. I’ve been on the web site and was really tempted to book my place in September. Now watching this I’m not so sure. Yes I was aware of the £10 a day parking but I simply couldn’t cope with the automated check in and room key malfunctions. In all honesty I was expecting your Premier room plus to be amazing, it wasn’t. Think I’ll stick with the Brotherswater Inn or the Premier Inn at Cockermouth. Hi Alan, always good to hear your honest reviews and it was sad to hear that it was quite bad from the start especially as it was your birthday and was bad weather outside. I was expecting a good review seeing as though it was new and in a very popular place like Keswick. That's a lot to pay for parking and bad that 3 staff tried but failed to cut yoyr key and the room was small too and with no bath. Nice touch with the chocolates though but I can understand why you won't be stopping here again. At least you have August to look forward to in a hotel there and Wetherspoons was good. No no way anything was going to spoil my birthday, although I could feel my bloody pressure rising when we were trying to cut a key, then we could not use the lift or then the stairs and then the final slap in the same, we could not get in our room. It never stopped raining once in any of the two days we were there but we make the most of it and the worse the weather got, the more we just laughed. Real nice of you to watch, cheers Alan

Great review Alan they really look like they have tried to get as many hotel rooms out of their planning permission build! We would be fuming at the self check in, don’t care how technologically advanced we are there is nothing beats a human smiley (or not so smiley depending on their day 🤭) face to meet and greet you after a long drive! The room was sooo small😮! Glad you dined at Woodstone great restaurant! Furious about the key card, we had a similar experience at the Cockermouth Travelodge the second day we returned from our outing we couldn’t get in, took forever! Might be old fashioned but I love it when we arrive at a hotel and they hand us an actual key 🎉🎉 gggrrr technology (in some cases 😂) hope it didn’t upset your birthday too much! Take care ❤️
I was determined come what may to enjoy my birthday, especially with so many people contributing towards it but they made it difficult. I am totally with you, when you have had a stressful drive in awful conditions, it is so nice to be met my a happy smiley face, checking you in and giving you a load of local knowledge (if you need it), something Premier Inn used to be famous. I hate self check - in, same as self check out at a supermarket and will always refuse to use it, see me drop my shopping basket and walk out in a right huff at Tesco, if they only have the self check outs on. I always enjoy a bit of banter and a laugh but all this automation is killing that but maximizing additional profits for these companies. Good review for new hotel which obviously is going through some early teething problems and possbily unable to get the staffing levels needed at the moment. I usually stay in Premier Inns by default as one usually knows what they are getting and what to expect, and they do try and make sure their hotels fit in with the surrounding areas, examples such as Chester, Llandudno and Tunbridge wells.
Anyway, if I can make some points and ask a few questions
Nearly all hotels charge for parking and £10 seems to be the norm, I'll use Blackpool and other bloggers as an example and would agree it is ridiculous
On checking in, was there another desk where a staff member could check you in or was it solely just self check in and drop key box? Might be staff not available yet but again would be stupid if no desk for that purpose...keys can go out of whack!
Lifts in newer hotels at least do tend to require one to scan their keycard to use it, I can think of a couple reasons at least of the top of my head.
Question on the food, I've assumed there was no breakfast...staffing I'm guessing? The menu you had did this at least have other food options than they ones you mentioned, perhaps in the medium term they will be have a full menu option
Also, yes hotel prices in general have gone up a lot sadly, energy prices have contributed I guess, I didn't hear you mention the price you paid for the room, I'd be interested to know...if I wanted to stay there for a night come Autumn

To be honest if we travel anywhere new out first look is always a Premier Inn and I have reviewed them in Keswick and in Scarborough, as you know the standard you should expect. This hotel was previously the Glenridding Hotel and had been there for years, before getting taken over and then refurbished by the Inn Collection Group of Hotels and despite it only just being reopening I must admit we were really disappointed in what we saw. Not a fan of check in being just an area of the bar, would have preferred a separate and more private area for that but we did have breakfast there and to be fair it was excellent, we both really enjoyed it and it was included in the price we paid. The Inn Collection do have a very good website where you can book and get an idea of price and menus and that is the reason I never say how must I paid (we did pay full price) as the price changes all the time due to the season but we booked their Winter Deal, which was good value. Thanks for a very timely review, I had booked at this hotel for early April but despite being a fan generally of Premier Inn, I had my doubts about this one. On the basis of your comments I have decided to go elsewhere. As you say this hotel will suit many people and the food options may improve with time, for now it’s not for us. Ahhh bugger........ I can't watch this video as it'll cast me back in time to the years 2014 - 2018. I was a contracts manager for a company called AIM and we had a corporate account with them. That meant that every time it was cheaper to bung me in one of these than pay my fuel expenses, I would find myself bunged up for the night. Contrary to the meme I can happily confirm that I didn't piss in the kettle ;-)

Great review. I like premier inns and have used them many times but this one is not for me either. The car parking (and price) would put me off. Also I don’t see Keswick as a premier inn kind of place if you know what I mean.
But agree with you that it’s probably ideal for some.
Used the Wetherspoons many times but never tried the pizza place. The Star of Siam (Thai) is my go-to eatery in Keswick. Enjoy your stay

Excellent review, Alan, very honest and very thorough. I think you were disappointed to give it the review you did but Andrea and I watched this together and thought you were spot on - with a new build you expect to be wowed and you weren't. I think £10 for parking isn't good either. We checked the pricing online and £157 for a Plus Room with no food is very steep, especially since the room is so small. A local B&B would be a far better option though it's location in Keswick is handy. I think you are paying for the location. The Lodore Hotel should be a lot better - nicer for Linda!! Excellent review, Alan. As someone who lives almost three hours from Keswick I was hoping to use the Premier Inn as an easy stress-free stop over to come back the next day instead of traveling back late at night. I love the Keswick area but it is a bit of a haul up from Lincolnshire for a day. However, given the prices quoted on Premier Inn’s website and the apparent potential aggravation I think I’ll give it a miss. The issues with food and self-checking in appear to be an issue that Premier Inn need to sort out as a matter of urgency if they are to provide a reliable and essentially enjoyable stay. Thanks for your efforts and as a result I hope Premier Inn take note!

Shocking from Premier Inn the fact no one was there to help, rooms look very small, Premier inns have lost their way, they used to be a cheap room for the night with outstanding beds, im doing a marathon in Worthing next month and it's a bit limited on hotels so I booked a Premier inn room, Premier plus room for one night £183, more fool me for paying it but for convenience I did.
I'm thinking maybe it's time not to stay in Premier inns anymore especially with the price hike.

Sorry your birthday stay was less than ideal from the get go Alan. I get you, you pay a premium and you get nothing in return. 3 tries to get your key card to work and they haven't summoned a manager? I would have walked out, called my bank and tell them to dispute the charges and gone somewhere else! Sorry excuse to start your stay. Your check in sets the tone for your stay and yours was sour from the start. Better luck with your next visit down the road.
Yes, we have stopped in Premier Inns all over the UK and normally there is someone to check you in and they are famous for the warmth of their welcome and their local knowledge, which is invaluable if you are new to the area but self check does not work for me at all. Haha, yes, we were in the town today, I had just come out of the gym and Mrs Metalman had been to the doctors across the road but we were parked in Tesco. Bit disappointed with the new hotel in Keswick, maybe we were expecting too much but either way, will not be stopping there again, £10 to park is a disgrace, cheers Alan
