    People are all concerned with the new dumbo coming out saying that it looks “disturbing “ and worrying about it being directed by Tim Burton. Do they not remember how weird, sad and cruel the original was??

      I don't know about anyone else, but I literally blanked out all but the last 20 minutes from my memory. I *know* I watched this movie as a kid tons of times, but I genuinely didn't recognize ANYTHING prior to Dumbo's mom being taken away. I could have sworn the "see an elephant fly" song happened in the midsection, not right at the end.

    For as heartbreaking a scene as Dumbo only being to have minimal contact with his mother through those bars, at least she gets to live throughout the entire movie- and gets a happy ending! Not many Disney mothers get to claim anywhere near as much success.

      @jamesowen5702 Před 5 lety +20

      @@nyx0s389 Go on, say why not, prove it, because it kind of does make it better.
      Since it was made in a period when segregation was still very alive in the US, I rather like the idea of Dumbo being given identifitably black friends. If you can forgive the 'caricatures', it's quite a nice thing! And really what are we objecting to here, they call each other brother, joke around a bit and sing well in a musical film? Oh and by the way the name Jim Crow does not actually feature in it. What you're seeing is not really caricature, they're characters, black characters for sure, and smart ones informed by their own culture - black culture - most obviously jazz culture. What's most charming and believable about the sequence is it's the black characters who despite the jokes are the most sympathetic to the little outcast - and did you ever stop to consider why? It's because they know what it's like to not be accepted by certain parts of society, that's why the scene works so well.
      It's maybe not the most subtle treatment of black-ness, but it is certainly not one that er... dehumanises the crows.
      Would it really be better if such black characters were indistinguishable from white ones?
      There, nuance.

      I dunno. Given that Walt basically had scab artists making this movie because his main animators were on strike (an act that Walt took very personally because he thought he had been wonderful to his employees), I wonder how much of the song is meant to be supportive of grunt workers and how much is meant to be sneering.

The myth of the happy labourer who just loves doing things and is satisfied with peanuts for pay just because they manage to be in a good mood and singing sometimes.
