It was great watching the friendly rivalry between Goggia and Vonn this season. Looking forward to 2018-2019 and hope both will stay healthy for it.

Wow. I was unaware of how close Vonn was in the standings. I haven't been watching the downhill standings for a while. Last I checked she was about 4th place. If Goggia had finished third, Vonn would have taken the crystal globe. Considering she's been hampered by a knee brace on a 33 year old body all season, that's even more remarkable than the 82 victories.

Yeah nice to see her win again. This girl knows how to go fast on skis. I will be rooting for her in the Super G tomorrow!

Nice to see a page not full with negative comments from the peanut gallery who know nothing about the sport only hate for a World Class Champion who deserves to be treated as the winner she is. I was most impressed with how all the people at the Olympics showed the class we are used to seeing at all World Cup events & the camaraderie that makes this sport so special. Congrats to Sofia & to Lindsey for her dedication to the sport she loves & for keeping her composure through the hateful lies spread by so many ignorant individuals. Time to break the most wins record & if she chooses hang up those most famous & fast skis it's gonna take many long years before her records & accomplishments are broken if that's even a reality. Rock on Miss Vonn...

The sportswoman I admire the more. She never gave up. I wish her to break Stenmark's record. She deserves it so much!

grande sofia olimpica e campionessa del mondo di discesa libera, arrivare secondi ma vincere questa è la beffa per chi vince la sola gara ahahahagh,è stata bravissima con tutta la pressione adosso è con la von che scendeva dopo di lei doveva mettersi davanti ad ogni costo è non arrivare più di terza o seconda grande sofia questo anno non lo dimenticherai mai più

There's no reason to tear down other competitors just to aggrandize your favorite. Winning the World Cup is good enough to establish her stature. If you think Vonn's four consecutive downhill victories is a joke, you should ask Sofia what she thinks about it. Goggia's crystal globe is a well deserved reward for her efforts to get control of the inconsistency she is famous for. Sofia Goggia is the World Cup and Olympic downhill champion, not World Champion. Ilka Stuhec is the reigning World Downhill Champion.

      dontpaniccc,
I have no idea why you think that I have diminished the achievement of Sofia Goggia. Well, yes I do. Perhaps you didn't read the comment by gianni sandrini in which he referred to Goggia as the World Champion. I stated the fact that this is not true. He also made the disparaging remark that Vonn winning single race was a joke, because winning the Globe is the more important thing. Thus my comment that the four consecutive World Cup Victories by Vonn are not not likely to be a joke to Goggia. I certainly did not disparage Sofia Goggia in any way.

I think you shouldn't rely too much on google translate, if you don't speak Italian. Gianni didn't say what you got. "beffa" can be translated as joke in other contexts, but in this case it has a meaning that is hardly translatable in English, but that basically means that it is paradoxical that she won the race, but still lost. No tearing down of anyone, no offense, nothing of what google translate suggested. :D

You're right that Google Translate must be taken with a grain of salt, and I always make an effort to read the context accurately. I don't know if you are a native Italian speaker, but I have researched (If you can call Internet searches on dictionary/linguistic sites to be research) and found many example contexts where the translation given involves words such as joke, mockery, jeer, scoff, jibe and just one instance where the word irony was used. That last maybe conveys a similar tone to paradox. But I'm pretty sure I didn't mistake my translation of "ahahahagh" in the "beffa" statement. I also don't know how knowledgeable of Alpine ski racing gianni is, but there is absolutely nothing either paradoxical or ironic about the event, as it happens all the time. Last season, Mikaela Shiffrin came in second in the final Slalom race but won the Slalom World Cup by a dominating margin. Tina Maze, in her record breaking 2013 season won only 11 of 37 starts while taking the overall, GS, Super G, and Combined titles.
