    Robin had the best song
    Brave Sir Robin ran away
    Bravely ran away away
When danger reared it's ugly head
He bravely turned his tail and fled
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
    And gallantly he chickened out
    Swiftly taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat
Bravest of the brave, Sir Robin!

    • @0okamino

That was also the combat strategy Sir Robin used to nearly fight the Dragon of Angor, as well as nearly standing up to the Vicious Chicken of Bristol. Such bravery is rarely seen.

Great reaction to a movie many of us have been enjoying for nearly 50 years. To add to the joke that never ends with this movie, the horse gag with the coconuts, a very clever merchandising idea someone thought of was to package a "Horse Action Figure" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The package consists of two empty halves of a coconut. Not making that up!

I first saw this in the early 1980's at one of the midnight shows theaters would have. Fresh out of high school, toasted, no idea what British comedy was, or who Monty Python was. For awhile we all sat confused and silent but ten minutes in and it was the hardest I have ever laughed not only at a movie but anywhere ever. To this day this remains my #1 favorite comedy film.

We're knights of the round table
    We dance whenever we're able
We do routines and chorus scenes
    With footwork impeccable
We dine well here in Camelot
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot
We're knights of the round table
    Our shows are formidable
But many times we're given rhymes
    That are quite unsingable
    We're opera mad in Camelot
We sing from the diaphragm a lot
War we're tough and able, quite indefatigable
Between our quests we sequin vests
    And impersonate Clark Gable
It's a busy life in Camelot
I have to push the pram a lot

Something not many people realize is how heavily this film is based on actual history and Arthurian myth. Witch-weighings were absolutely a thing (witches have no soul and can fly, so they'd have to be lighter than people, right?), even if they appeared much later, roving bands of religious fanatics with a penchant for self-abuse known as flagellants appeared as a reaction to the Black Death, and knights running from rabbits are one of the most common margin drawings in medieval manuscripts (incidentally also proving that the battle of jocks vs. nerds has been going on since forever), just to name a few.

The bit with the witch and the duck is especially funny to me, not only because of the twist of having the witch admit "It's a fair cop" (which is an admission that you got caught fair and square when you were doing something wrong), but because, to this day, I remember the chapter on logic in my 5th grade math book had a problem that concluded with something like "All ducks are officers, but not all officers are ducks."

Such an iconic comedy that has withstood the test of time! You never pick up on all the multiple layers of humor the first time. For example, King Arthur and his knights using a more cockney accent while the peasants speak in a more aristocratic accent. Loved seeing you laugh so much at this one, Emma! Definitely watch "The Life Of Brian" sometime. ❤

  • @martinhafner2201

They have a lot of sophisticated content hidden in the humor. In the first scene, when Arthur uses the flowery language "is not a stranger to our land" to justify temperate zone coconuts, he is quoting from an ancient falconry manual written by Frederic II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from around 1200 A.D. The quote was Frederick II rejecting popular myths about a bird that was present in Britain that had no discovered nesting sites. He felt the mystical theories were silly and that the bird clearly nested elsewhere and migrated into Britain seasonally and then migrated back for nesting. Seems quite reasonable today, but it was a minority opinion back in 1200 A.D. So even the background of the quote was steeped in the superstitious stuff that the Pythons loved to make fun of. Frederick II trying to speak out as the one reasonable voice in a crowd of madness is much like a Python sketch. They more or less parody that kind of situation in the "She's A Witch" scene, but substitute an idiot spouting pseudo-science and acting all noble, while actually making the ignorance worse.
Oh, the original falconry reference was in Latin and only conveniently translated to English in the 1940's. So one of them found the translation book. And remembered it! I found it because their quote was word-for-word exact and made my internet search much quicker.
Edit: That may have been a bird present in Sicily, not Britain. Doesn't change the concept.

Of course special effects existed back in the '70s. You will find special effects even in old black and white movies like Casablanca from the early 1940s.
The thing is, Month Python was a TV series and the movie you are watching is just continuing the acts that were on the TV series and that style of cartoon animation was part of the TV series. They didn't have a big budget, but that's not the reason for the animation, that's just the type of animation that was also in the TV series.

You should go down the Month Python (killer) rabbit hole. Since there are 45 episodes of their "Monty Python's Flying Circus" show to go through, I recommend watching a film the troupe made in 1972 called "And Now For Something Completely Different" , where they re-created their most popular sketches from the show. Then you should react to "Monty Python's Life Of Brian" (recommend reacting to this around Easter), and then their last film "Monty Python's Meaning Of Life". I also recommend watching a concert film from 1980 they made called "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" to see the live show they used to perform after the TV show ended.

I have a theory. This movie causes a childlike regression in it's viewers because at this level of absurdism, you cannot count on anything.
