    So if I have 4 physical servers in an ESXi cluster. One of the VMs in a host have sql standard installed.
    What licensing options do I have if vmotion is enabled?
    (Assuming I don't have/need SA.)

      SQL Server standard edition running in a VM doesn't require the whole physical server to be licensed, also for SQL server software, in general, is not affected by cluster setup either VMware vMotion or any equivalent VM movement solution across hosts, however, you need active Software Assurance purchased to frequently move from one host to another within the server farm. If you don't have/need SA, then you are allowed to move the VM only every 90 days. Hope this helps!

    I bought a SQL server license for one hostname , but I have to apply license on different host name now. Will that sql server license be valid on new hostname?

      If you are running a version of DPA after 9.0, the licenses are floating and are not tied to a hostname. You can register the second instance in DPA and go into license manager to reallocate the license to the other instance.
      If you are on an older/legacy version of DPA, you will need to open a support ticket, because a special motion is required to move licenses.

    Sir,
    I have question what do you mean by SA should be applied to passive server.. please enlighten..thks

      With SQL Server 2014, Microsoft introduced a concept of Software Assurance (SA) meaning you can port licenses to wherever the workload moves. Without SA, you may be exposed to licensing restrictions for workloads moving from active to passive servers. Please reach out to Microsoft directly regarding specific information regarding your licensing agreements for accuracy.

    If I Vmotion a licensed Enterprise SQL server to another host to maintenance do I need to purchase more licenses to run SQL on the other host?

    • @solarwinds
      @solarwinds  Před 7 lety

      No. You do not have to have a separate SQL Server license to move a virtual SQL Server instance to a different host. However, unless you have Software Assurance you cannot move it back for a period of 90 days. All SQL Server licenses with active Software Assurance can be reassigned to another server within the server farm as often as needed.
