    I spent the day in Lyon once, years ago. Sadly, I had an upset stomach, so no tasty food for me, and limited energy to explore. The benefit, sitting around gave me the opportunity to talk to people. I’m just remembering the group of teenaged skateboarder guys competing to speak English to me, and wanting me to tell them who was the best. Hehe! So cute!

    A few trips back, we stayed in the old part of Lyon. It was a lot of fun and the passerelles were very handy. My wife wanted to see the Musée du Tissage, and I really enjoyed it, along with the puppet museum. I'm sure tomorrow's video will have some places we didn't discover.
    It's a different station, but, have you ever read "Le Robinson de la Gare de Saint-Lazare?" Apollinaire has a wonderful quirkiness that any writer would appreciate.

    So fun to see my old college stomping grounds! I lived at the top of the hill in Le Vieux Fort. There was a flippin roman aquaduct outside my window. :D (how to blow a 20 year old American's mind) Gotta get back there at some point. Is today your last day there? Lyon is a place where it's well worth doing a guided walking tour so you get shown all the cool traboules and the cool historical tidbits. Check out the opera house. It burned at one point and they made a modern domed glass top to the old stone base. The dance company trains up there and I had a chance to go and watch them once with my ballet class. The view was fantastic.

      @@historianlaura You're right that there is a risk relying on your phone. Fortunately, all the trains I've travelled on in France in recent years have had power outlets, so I've been able to keep my phone charged. You also have the option of buying the ticket online (or on your phone) and printing it out at a kiosk in the station. You just need the reference code you received at purchase time and the last (family) name you used.

      phone tickets are same price. just buy your tickets a few months before for the cheapest fares, and also travel the first train in the morning for the cheapest fare. if you want dirt cheap, i.e., $10 tickets, SNCF now has the Ouigo service where you can book ahead to select cities, but the train stations are not centrally located, and you don't get a reserved seat, they assign seats. the difference between french and german trains is that french high speed trains usually come with a seat reservation, german trains normally don't, so on a german train, most people simply buy the ticket, crowd the platform, and when the doors open, it becomes a scrum to find an open seat; a bit annoying, but germans seem to prefer it that way. another difference between french and german trains is german trains are not stylish, and are normally late due to poor maintenance of the rail system.

    Seine is up 30 inches from 12 hours ago.
    I think they do controlled releases of the water, based on the shape of the graph of the water levels. (Has to rise another 4 meters to get to the levels seen 03/06/2016) (no evidence of that on the horizon) (but it's been low for weeks, now this sudden rise) (dotcom). ;)

      @@yvonnerahmes9618 Haha thank you!
      (multiple posts, if it'll let me .. this got longer than I expected, haha)
      *1 of 3* posts from me, here, now. ;)
      Starting a conversation is hardly nosey - please continue!
      I was a big fan of Highlander (the series, Adrian Paul) which was shot for half a season in Paris, each year.
      When MacLeod would board the barge (which was moored at Quai de la Tournelle, in the shadow of Notre Dame**1) the ramp from the quai to the barge would change angles (dramatically, from almost level to very steep upwards to get onto the deck of the barge).
      Which meant that the Seine had risen (or fallen) quite a bit, as referenced from some other episode of this TV show.
      V924+54 Notre Dame, Paris
      As I'm interested in shooting locations for motion pictures, and city geography as well .. and rivers (generally) I started to track the levels of the Seine (just in the scenes filmed for that TV show) and look for further evidence (in other scenes in the same episode) of the river rising and falling.
      I wondered about the true season of the year in Paris as compared with the depicted season for TV, and how the river levels changed, seasonally.
      When I started noticing the same effects in Jay's vlog (which are daily visual reports of the locale) I decided to find out how the newspapers seemed to know just what the current levels were, which was (recently!) when I found www.vigicrues.gouv.fr which reports on such metrics, just as we have them here, locally (northwest Connecticut, USA, 41N 73W).
      ________
      **1 also Bassin de la Villette, when the Seine was in flood stage, they'd move the barge there, which puzzled me for a long time

    • @Christopher-oj1nf
      @Christopher-oj1nf Před 5 lety +1

      post 2 of 3
      IN THE United States, we have very good monitoring of river levels, and they're all reported (via Internet) as the public is paying tax money for this surveillance (and so the gov't finds it necessary to offer the data, free to the public). So I track those as well (but generally only during times near flood stage, or drought).
      As I used to kayak in our local rivers (mostly, the Farmington River) I became interested (back then) in how the managers used 'impounded' rain waters - the rivers here seemed to me (from camping on the shore!) to rise suddenly, and with no direct relationship to the weather.
      They were releasing water into the rivers, that had been impounded behind dams I didn't wonder so much as to why, but more as to how, as I had no knowledge of the hold-and-release strategy they use (here, and elsewhere).

    • @Christopher-oj1nf
      @Christopher-oj1nf Před 5 lety +1

      post 3 of 3 I think. ;)
      Note to self: reply to your own, to sequence them correctly, without fuddle-dee-doo reverse collation ;)
      After a (very large) rain storm, locally, the river will be high for a full week after: they'd impounded enough water behind the dams, to have enough to release for an entire week (that's a lot of excess capacity).
      Now, water cannot just stay in one place (as it flows downhill each and every moment it is unobstructed from doing so) so I knew that the river level should have fallen, long before that week was out, so I deduced they'd impounded some (water available only during the storm itself) and were 'letting it out, slowly'.
      And in this way, they keep river levels from rising unreasonably, and (I think; don't know) also, this gives them water to release when conditions are (now) so dry that the river 'could use a little more water than it has' for various reasons (including enhancing sports fishing; they stock the rivers with fish for the anglers' benefit, and other purposes) (including river navigation, by boats, that need the extra water, so that they don't ground and become stranded, or damage the boat).

    • @Christopher-oj1nf
      @Christopher-oj1nf Před 5 lety

      Post 4 of 3 (hahaha)
      We have a reservoir for drinking water that was formed by damming a natural river.
      This had consequences in Connecticut, including industrial water power (a surprising number of factories relied upon water power to produce goods for consumption).
      When the City of Hartford commissioned the building of the reservoir's dam (in 1912!) it was decided that the (subsequent) denial of river water volume to those factories was unacceptable, so they decided to also (on a completely different watershed) build the 'Compensating' reservoir near Barkhamsted (the other one is Nepaug).
      The Compensating Reservoir (still called that when I was a kid; don't know about today) had one job: to compensate for water power 'lost' to the Nepaug reservoir; they'd impound water from time to time (during rainstorms) and let it out (to somewhat drain off excess capacity) into the same watershed that used to be fed by the Nepaug (River) (I think).
      So anybody downstream from the feed point would experience increased water power, during those times, and factories could continue to produce goods for consumption, as the water power drives power shafts in the factories, in the very same way an electric motor would.
      Sometimes water power is used directly, using mechanical linkage, and other times it's converted to electricity (using turbines turned by the force of flowing river water) and then the electricity is used to power electric motors that do the work in the factory.
      I FOUND out about the reservoir scheme hatched by the City of Hartford, in a document from 1912 (or thereabouts) that was offered online. Google was my friend (that day).
      Apparently, the other (obvious) option was the Connecticut River, which was filthy from industrial uses at that time, and nobody wanted to drink from it. ;)
      Also, the Farmington may've actually been closer to Hartford (than Nepaug) and may've been considered for the same uses. They went with Nepaug.
