    Hi, I had a minor off road crash with my R1250 GS on late September. My bike survived with just a few scratches, but I don't. I got left tibia and knee capsule fracture. My foot was operated 27th September with three titanium plates on tibia and a handfull of long screws on knee capsule. First three weeks I wore a remowable glasfiber sleeve, then next three weeks Don Joy joint. From 1st December I was permitted to gradually load my foot and on Christmas I got rid of the sticks. I started weekly physiotherapy in December, that has been very helpful. Since the beginning I've trained my foot three times every single day, in total over an hour and a half in a day. After christmas I could bend my leg much enough (100 degrees) for riding an exercise bike. I now start my daily excercises by pedaling 10 minutes for warming up and then doing the excercise program I got from physiotherapist. I got three months sick leave and started working (mainly home office) again after new year.
    Now, exactly 5 months after accident, the knee still feels a little bit odd, but allready since mid October had almost no pains. The foot bends about 120 degrees, with bending I still have much work to do. I can pedal excercise bike how much I like and have been doing a few 4 kms walking per week without any problems. Since christmas I could go upstairs by both feet first, yesterday I also could go downstairs by both feet first. I still can't sit for long periods at a time because my leg swells. All excercise and small tinkering seems to be good for the broken foot. I've been all the time in a positive mood and believe, that I'll recover quite good and be riding on late April (when the snow has gone) again. I wish you all the best and a lot of guts for training.

      Good morning Mr. Mek Work, many, many thanks for your interesting comments and accident story.
      From an exercise and rehabilitation perspective I couldn't agree more. As you say, it's all about building in exercise routines frequently during the day such that it becomes a habit. It's interesting to hear that like you, I start my day by doing stretches while sat on the side of the bed - in a particular isometric foot and ankle exercises then I do 10 minutes of 'backwards' cycling on my bicycle. Then it's walking, going up and down stairs, sat on a pilates ball and rocking to and fro. I'm at 120 degrees knee bend with effort but last year I was stuck at 75 degrees which as you know really compromises mobility.
      Good luck with your recovery and I'm sure your target of April will be met - let me know how you get on.
      All the best, cheers, Phil.

    @glideman Před 8 měsíci +2

    Hi Phil
    So happy to see your improving so much. You've done amazing to get back to walking and riding. I know how much it takes! I'm still in bed after my accident, two months in hospital and I've been at home (in bed) for two months. I went back to hospital two weeks ago to have my right leg & left foot scanned, the surgeon was happy with both. I'm now on the waiting list to have the metalwork removed from my foot. This will mean I will be off my feet for a couple more weeks before starting to learn to walk again.
    Must say I feel like I've been in bed forever & it's driving me mad. I've still got 12 months to go before having the frame removed from my right leg. Agree about the muscle wastage and how hard it is to walk after being off your feet for so long. Hoping to get back as much movement as you have eventually, not sure if I'll be able to face riding a bike again though. Still having flashbacks of the accident. I wake up hearing the sound of me hitting the car most nights. Never watched as much CZcams or Netflix in my life ;-)
    Keep making the video's, they are unique and great!
    All the best Phil....

    • @80eightReviews
      @80eightReviews  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hey Glideman, good to hear from you again. Still in bed - really sorry to hear that and yeah, it's horribly difficult. Aside from the whole not moving thing and the effects of that, it's the small things that you take for granted which are some ways the worst - don't you think? Making (and carrying!) a cup of tea, brushing your teeth etc, are just so frustrating! Having a frame around my leg isn't something I had to deal with so you really have my commiserations for that. A year! Blimey.
      As for flashbacks, yeah, it's kinda part and parcel of it. I think it's just something that will drift away over time. For the first few months when it was unclear whether I'd be walking unaided or not, I kept running it through my mind and having the "what if" conversations in my head at night. With the result that yeah, I'd wake up with a start after seeing and hearing it again. And riding a bike again was the LAST thing on my mind in the first 6 months - as you know it's just about small day to day improvements and having realistic goals.
      One of which is a 'happy surgeon' So that must mean nothing has moved, there's no signs of infection and the bones are showing signs of growth? Which is brilliant news! Well done, I'm super pleased to hear that :-)
      In terms of telly though, if you're into space stuff, check out "For all Mankind" over on Apple TV - it's a re-imagining of what 'could' have happened following the Apollo landings and it's really good. There's three series and a one month sub is £9 - so well worth a binge for under a tenner! And/or get a week free!
      Anyway, keep touch - let me know how you're getting on and if we don't speak before, have a good Xmas - even mostly horizontal ones can be alright! All the best, cheers, Phil.

      Good morning Paul, how are you doing? Thanks for your comments and yes, you are SO right about the NHS. From my experience I have zero complaints to make and the breadth of the support and people involved was incredible. I reckon well over 100 different people in all sorts of specialisms had something to do with either scraping me up off the road and or fixing me up. Even now, I'm still getting NHS physio a few times a month. It is incredible really. And we are so very lucky to have it as you say.

      Morning Guy,
      So good to hear from you as always and loads of thanks for your kind and supportive comments. I think I mentioned in an earlier video that when I was lying in hospital and it seemed impossible that I would walk again - let alone ride any form of two wheels, that seeing other folks recovery stories really helped - despite every patient and incident being different. So this was my attempt at returning the benefit in some small way. The ability of humans to recover and adapt and 'knowing' and 'seeing' that is and was, a real help.
      I'm quite jealous of your toy Harley-Davidson to be honest, so I've put it on my Christmas list for this year. It could be my first Harley! Also, I haven't attempted the 'Flodden' ride yet as the weather has ben unspeakably vile recently but I'm determined to do it whenever the opportunity arises.

    Hi Phil.. I had a cycle accident (rode into a car with my knee taking the impact through the headlight). Not quite the same outcome but also had a reasonable recuperation period. On top of the usual physio stuff (and cycling did most for the flexibility) one of the things which has helped me in the last 6 months is a stand up desk for working. I guess it depends if you are spending time at a keyboard or not but thought I’d share as it’s really helped me. I can share details of the one I bought (about £80) if you are interested.

    • @80eightReviews
      @80eightReviews  Před 7 měsíci

      Hello again Rob, knee and headlight - crikey. How are you doing now? Is your knee flexion and walking OK?
      I totally agree with the cycling - since my Op in August I've been able to fully rotate the pedals of my bike at my usual seat height and while I have zero strength, it's really loosening the joint and presumably breaking up the scar tissue quite nicely.
      As for the desk, I'm not spending too much time at a keyboard at the moment and when I do, I'm sat on a gym ball and rocking to and fro which kinda keeps me loose. However, as things improve the k/b action will doubtless increase so any recommendations on standing desks is most welcome! Thanks in advance.
      All the best, cheers, Phil.

      @@80eightReviews Hi Phil.. yes flexion is more or less all ok now thanks. Took a while to walk properly and get the strength back as you are experiencing. The desk was from Zoro UK ( great name!) and the product ID is ZT3291942S. It feels to me that standing up working was the final piece of the jigsaw for my recovery. I also almost pivoted to a 300cc+ scooter but garage space was at a premium and I didn’t want to get rid of my Tiger 800 which has decent knee bend friendly ergos. That said I am looking at some highway pegs to attach to my engine bars to stretch my leg out when cruising ! Looking forward to viewing more vids. All the best, cheers, Rob

      Mr Knights Templar! How are you doing? Well and thriving I hope. Have you read "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco? Loads of stuff in there about the Knights Templar - it's a really good read. Er, anyway!
      Many thanks for your support and as for the Guzzi....It's on the to-do list for next year, promise! All the best and Happy Christmas to you and yours also, cheers, Phil.

    Glad to hear there's hope! Thanks for sharing your story!
    My wife (29 years young, non smoker) has a non union. She has been suffering for the past 5 years. She had 3 surgeries.
    My question: Are there any tools to speed up the growth of the bone? Does anybody know some doctors who are specialized on such cases?
    Any help is appreciated.

    • @80eightReviews
      @80eightReviews  Před měsícem

      Hey Pete - thanks for stopping by and I’m very sorry to hear about the situation your wife and you find yourself in. That’s awful and as you might guess I do have an insight into the disappointment when in a non-union situation and the mobility / pain that goes with it.
      You will have Googled this of course and will know about bone growth stimulation and whether that works or not and the importance of diet. For my situation I made sure I ate well (I’m vegetarian anyway so live on leafy vegetables and nuts and seeds) plus I tried to do whatever I could in terms of keeping the blood flowing - even when not weight bearing. There’s so many factors but keeping yourself well, maybe some vitamin D and exercise when you can are the basics as your wife will know.
      I really hope you find something and the situation improves - must admit I was terrified of needing a bone graft so really hope that’s not on the cards for your wife.
      As for doctors - here in the UK on the NHS, you get what and who is available and I have to say I had great care and much faith in the trauma team and lead orthopaedic consultants at Newcastle where I was treated.
      All the best to you and your wife Andy, let me know how you get on, cheers, Phil.

    Phil, an old acquaintance once said, "it's better to burn out, than rust". Glad you are back in the saddle again!
    Thanks for posting this vid, and that angle of motion chart.
    Ten months ago, I lost some knee motion from a heavy log that rolled on me. Now I can build a leg sized protractor and see where I am.
    Yes I know I should see a doc, but that's not going to happen.

      @80eightReviews  Před 6 měsíci

      Good afternoon Mr. Savagebolt and a very (belated) Happy New Year to you! Hope all is well with you and yours.
      Better to burn out...Yep, exactly! Is that a Neil Young lyric? Either way, that has to be the sentiment and yes, it is brilliant to be back in the saddle!
      I must admit I'm looking to seeing your 'leg sized protractor' - maybe you could sell it to er, anyone with dodgy knees? Very sorry to hear you've been attacked by a heavy log that rolled on to you though. I'm trying to imagine how that happened? I'm seeing some sort of Jeremy Renner style accident involving snow and huge log piles? Let me know!
      Well, I'm not going to wag my finger and say 'go and see and a doctor' however, a bit of physio advice might be good? You know I'm from the stone-age yet I now find myself sitting on an inflatable pilates ball and it seems to work. I'm not chanting or anything though :-)
      Anyway, great to hear from you as always, cheers, Phil.

      @@80eightReviews I first read that quote in a local Cycle Newspaper. The author rode an old Indian and went by the name of Battery Bill.
      My neighbor had a dump truck come & drop him a load of very heavy chuncks of maple. The logs were short, but about 3 feet in diameter. Together we split wood for a few hours. When I became tired, I said "that's enough for me for today", but like an idyit, I tried to grab one more of the smaller logs. Unfortunately, a big one rolled off the top of the pile and pinned me on the ground. I was so thankful to be working with a mate- (as you folks say), and not alone.
      That was in April 2023, I'm walking just fine now, & hike very often, but can't squat down like I used to. The knee won't bend enough.
      Most of my hikes are 3 miles or less, but many hills, up & down. I'm 70 this year, so even with your limp, I think you'd beat me in a foot race! ❤

      @80eightReviews  Před 6 měsíci

      Battery Bill - great name! And story!
      As for the logs, that could have been really nasty. Someone (and your mate) was definitely looking after you that day.
      I’ve found cycling or even just pushing the pedals round backwards for a few minutes seems to help with loosening the joint. I try and do that before I go for a walk each morning.
      As for the race - On the flat I’m doing ok, but I’d reckon you would still waste me going uphill! I’m like a crab with a broken pincer on inclines 😀

      @@80eightReviews Thanks for reminding me about bicycling. I will add some of that when the snow melts ❄
      We had 9 inches of heavy wet snow fall last night. I do love a good snow storm though!

    • @80eightReviews
      @80eightReviews  Před 6 měsíci +1

      9 inches of snow? Blimey! We've 1cm forecast next week and already the country is grinding to a halt!
      On the bicycle, I was looking at a US product called 'ortho-pedal' which basically is a special pedal which can be fitted in various positions along the crank arm - which then means the knee angle required for full rotation can be reduced / increased as required.
      In the end I didn't need it but it sounds like a good product and they have some great case studies. Either way there's something about that rotational movement you get on a bike which seems really good for breaking up scar tissue and stiffness. Just not in the snow :-)

    Likewise a very happy and healthy new year to you too. I assume I’ve missed the information but what happened to the Guzzi 850, I’m only asking as I fancy one. I assume your injury forced you to part company with it

      Hello again Andrew! Yes, I sold the lovely, gorgeous, beautiful Guzzi at the beginning of the year. It had already been in storage for 10 months by then and I couldn’t get anywhere close to being able to ride it, so it and my CRF had to go unfortunately. I tried to sit on one just before I bought the CL but again, I couldn’t get my right foot on the peg…Still I’m going to try again next year in the hope things improve.
      Either way though, the V7’s are lovely bikes and very different to say equivalent Triumphs plus they have a bit more real world performance than Royal Enfields. I love them!
      Have a great festive period Andrew & let me know what you decide to do, all the best, cheers, Phil.

      @80eightReviews  Před 6 měsíci

      Hey Sateesh, good to hear from you - how are you doing?
      My leg/ knee bend is now around 105 degree passive and I can get to around 115 degrees when I'm forcing it to bend. So the bend has improved a lot but my main issue is continuing pain when I walk which causes me to limp.

      Hey thanks very much. Tax relief ha ha, yeah - given the 'generosity' of YT in terms of sales that might be a good of saving a few £. Not that I'm suggesting tax relief on business expenses is er, a strategy of any kind. Moving on!
