I went backpacking with @MirandaGoesOutside through the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington. And it's a time honored tradition that I challenge them to a Battle of the Backpackers duel, where we compare our gear we're packing to see who has the best gear and to learn from each other's styles and preferences. Miranda spent several years hosting REI's CZcams channel and has been an inspiration to me as she set off on her own to run her own channel. I had a similar journey as I had hosted Backpacking TV for years before going independent and creating this channel. I learn a lot from Miranda, and this time is no different! She has some fun tricks up her sleeve to make backpacking more fun and enjoyable.

Miranda won before it started when she quoted Labyrinth. 🤣
shoot. That's fair though.
And also, do you want to stand up grandpa?😂😂😂😂
😂
Eric wins for aesthetic color scheme, Miranda wins for cool and fun accessories 😂❤
Dang, when two backpacking extroverts unite...this would be it. Love these two personalities. Ok, back to backpacking....more please!
haha we are definitely extroverts!
Love that this has a sequel! The gear battle series is one of my favorites for sure.
Btw, haven't seen anyone else do this, but for my camp shoes I use the booties Miranda has and I put shoe covers on them that are meant for worksites. They're crazy light, store completely flat and are made of waterproof fabric (not plastic) and have a thicker soul with little grips on them. They're washable and have worked out really nicely for me 🤷
the shoe cover idea is brilliant! I might have to try that one!
i love this idea !
What an awesome idea!
Genius! Trying this asap
Are you referring to the blue ones like they wear in hospitals?? They hold up okay?? I work in clean rooms and we use them too so this would be brilliant as a way to reuse ones we normally toss.
New life goal: get a trail sticker from Miranda!
Apparently you'll need to remind her she has these handy!
Two of my favorites together!! yesss!!!
awww shucks. thank you!
My two favorite outdoor CZcamsrs together again!
I'd pick Miranda's set-up this time, but I really liked seeing which budget gear items made it into Eric's kit (that tent is sweet for the price point). Happy trails!
The dynamic duo! I always learn so much watching you two!
Weird. I learn from you!
Qvc in the outdoors with a couple good ideas sprinkled in. Set in an amazing place with a beautiful background that almost looks fake itself.
That mystery ranch looks like a nice pack for us old dudes. Even if I had light gear it would feel nice carrying it in that Cadillac of a pack. Fun video.
Little bear canister life hack. It will hold enough water to give yourself a sponge bath and do laundry. Nothing is better than a good scrub and clean socks.
I love Miranda's LiteAF curve 46! I have the Curve 40. The most comfortable pack I've ever owned, and ultra light to boot! For bigger loads though, I'm not upgrading to the 46 .. Keeping my ULA Circuit which has treated me right for many years. Fun video both of you!
Eric, I also use the Grayl, but the plastic version. One thing viewers should know is that the Grayl is a water purifier, not just a filter. It gets more nasty stuff out than the standard Sawyer, Katadyn, etc. As a kidney transplant patient on immunosuppressant drugs, I've found that the weight penalty of the Grayl is so much worth it. Plus the water tastes so much better than out of the normal filters, so even normal people would prefer the taste from it.
You raise a great point about the Grayl. Yes, it's much better at removing all sorts of undesirables and I definitely notice the taste of the water improves in the Grayl vs regular filters. Thanks for bringing that up!
So easy a CubScout could use one too. My son loved mine and was so easy to use we have been wanting to get another one just for him.
Ok, now show us the trip! Love you both (and Rainer) for the joy, knowledge, and curiosity you share constantly. LOTR and Labyrinth references (only way it could be better would be with a Monty Python reference worked in there somewhere).
But seriously, I really enjoy your collab content just as much (and maybe just a dash more) as your individual channels.
🏕️🏞️ 🍻 cheers!
I love your budget mindset, Eric!! The camping moon stove is massively impressive! Thank youuu😎
That's absolutely one of my favorite gear finds of the year. It's so good!
I’ve moved on from heavy packs because I just don’t carry much stuff anymore but I can confirm the durability of Mystery Ranch gear. I have two Dana Design packs(same people) that have held up to a decent amount of use for over 30 years. Not one tear or broken buckle. Solid gear for sure.
Nice to see people bringing a few extras instead of the ultralight fever thing. That is just too much. Maybe on a thru hike, but just for general backpacking it won't kill you to carry a couple extra pounds. Budget hikers have to do it out of necessity. Big deal. If you have a decent pack that puts the weight on the hips, it's not that important.
Yeah, if you're crushing tons of miles then going full UL makes a lot of sense! But for regular backpacking, it's nice to just carry what you want.
lol 😂Miranda mentioning her losing her stuff sack. 😅😅this past camping trip I kept losing it and other people finding it 😆
Contact case hack is brilliant!
I'm absolutely doing this on my next backpacking trip.
Yaaaay 3 of my favorites!! Always fun to watch you guys together - can't wait for Miranda's video to come out
This video touches on something I strongly believe, which is the REAL point of ultralight gear is to save weight on the essentials so you can can carry more ridiculous stuff that would give real ultralighters an aneurism at the mere thought of taking on a backpacking trip XD (this will be something different for everyone, for me it's mostly [1] more photography equipment and [2] supplies/tools for at least a meal or two of more ambitious camp cookery than "pour-water-in-a-bag")
You two have definitely influenced my kit in the past year! Thanks Eric for not making me feel bad about my 25-35 lb budget load out. There really is some great inexpensive gear out there.
I would have to give the nod to Miranda this time. She also took you to my all time favorite hiking place! I like the fact that you both aren't afraid to modify your gear to suit your needs! I also like the idea of Eric vest support for the Mystery Ranch backpack. I don't think I will go back to one that heavy though as I carried 38 lbs. up to Colchuck Lake 5 years ago when I turned 66. I don't think I will ever go totally UL but trying to keep the weight down as I get older. I do like Miranda's gear, especially that solar light! I'm sure Miranda knows we cannot have ANY campfires in WA this time of year so it might be nice to at least get the feeling of a campfire even if it didn't have the warmth, LOL! I love NEMO equipment and my Feathered Friends Flicker Hybrid quilt/sleeping bag (the best of both worlds for people who just can't use quilts but want options lighter than a bag). Eric, I didn't know you drink Deathwish Coffee! I have to take that in my drinks bag too! 😂
Favs, u2r great together. Eric is amazing and Miranda is so lovable.
aw thanks! We really like backpacking together.
That $109 tent, man. It might be too heavy for backpacking, but it would be a great option for people trying out camping for the first time. Spending $600+ on a Nemo tent and another $600 on a comfortable sleeping system to find out if I like or hate camping alone would make me never even try.
It makes me laugh you "need to win" haha. I started following you (cuz your trips are so hardcore that the content is equally awesome and intimidating) because of Miranda, who makes hiking seem could be an "everyone could enjoy a little" hobby. Miranda also does hardcore trips that I could only admire as of now, but I feel she was the bridge for me to start appreciating the rest of the backpackers in a way if it makes any sense?... ok now I am gonna go to her channel to praise you.
4 lbs for a full two person tent is pretty normal - 2 lbs per person is light.
@@layne4376 I would use 2 people tent myself in this situation so it would be heavy for me; but as a 2P tent, 4lbs isn't bad.
Sorry, Eric, Miranda definitely wins this round!
And I’m 100% going to need to know the trail y’all are on right now. 😍
BOOOO! Thumbs down! haha it's alright, Miranda's the winner here. We're in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness mostly on the Icicle Ridge Trail but we were doing a unique connection of several trails.
13:12 OMG, the Labyrinth reference. I love that Eric says, "oh okay, not the creepy...". It's creepy, Eric. You should watch it. Cheers!
Amazing duo! Comical and witty as always. Admire that about your videos guys! I’m inspired to not only add some of Miranda’s nick nacks, but also not be afraid to pack a 4 lb tent until I can afford an ultralight one. Thanks a million guys! ❤❤❤
I love Miranda's accessories, especially the drawing kit and games. I LOVE Eric's backpack! I'm gonna look into it for myself cuz I think it would be great for general travel and I mostly dispersed camp near my car so I don't need something lightweight but I need something more durable and customizable cuz I always struggle to find a backpack that really fits my torso and I love the way it clips in the front more thoroughly.
Love the gear battle. You both bring interesting perspectives on the gear.
I love the two chest straps of your pack, Eric. I have often wanted a second chest strap on my pack when out on trail, particularly when I do have some slightly heavier loads.
Although I gravitate towards lightweight gear myself, I really appreciate the recent emphasis on budget-friendly gear.
I really like the double chest strap and I've started to see other companies incorporate it into UL packs, such as Zpacks. Curious to see if more companies adopt it as I think it really improves the way a pack carries.
My mom got me that lantern for Christmas last year! It’s so versatile and cute!
.. I have used down booties for many years ,, almost always at high altitude and overnight temps can get quite low even in summer ... Also carry sandles as water/camp shoes but have never worn together .. Another score for Miranda ..
I think the booties / sandals combo is brilliant. I need to get me a pair of the Teva style sandals so they can pair up properly.
Love the gear reviews and diy ideas !! Well done on a great video ! The colaberation with miranda is by my favorite videos of both of yours & her channel keep them coming please !!
This is absolutely the franken-style perfect kit video! I feel like a want to be ultralight but I like my creature comforts. I am a larger lady who rolls around a lot at night, so having that big ole roomy tent would 100% be up my alley! I primarily do traditional car camping but it'd be nice to have some backpacker gear for times when I want to branch out or just make packing and unpacking my car easier solo.
Wonderful and fun collab, as always. Both of you have been exploring a greater breadth of gear options this summer, exploring very valid budget options rather than purely deep dives into the most elite / UL / and unfortunately expensive gear (fun to watch for a while, until eaten alive by FOMO!). I love how you are able to pick up on great advice and great gear suggestions from each other, and make them your own. As to who had the best gear, I'm leaning a bit more towards Miranda's (LOVE HER AF BAG! COULD NEVER AFFORD IT!) but think I prefer your tent & sleep system. I picked up the NatureHike Mongar 2p this summer, haven't had a chance to use it yet, hope you get around to reviewing that, as I think it's a fairer comparison to the FS Granite than the Cloud Up in your recent reviews.
Great video! Love this sequel. I really enjoy learning about gear as we're trying to get outfitted for backpacking.
Hahahahaaaa......!!!! Eric now says "adore"!
yeah when did this happen?!
@@eric_hanson Hilarious! 21:47? "I genuinely adore LMNT."
Eric, was that judgment in your tone lol, “is that the olllld one?” Lol
haha, no. It was admiration!
@@eric_hanson😂😂😂
Love her tent. I want one .. love Eric’s chair and sleeping bag. You both win.
Who needs a backpack to carry a ton of gear? PARENTS!!! How did you all miss this? When backpack with my entire family my husband and i are carry pretty much all the gear for our younger kids. We go short enough distances that 35-40 pounds each isn't really a problem.
yeah I blanked on some obvious ones! Parents and scouts and trip leaders, but most definitely parents!
Have to admit, I love the orange/grey coordination! Featherstones tent is amazing, I keep hoping they will restock! But obviously the Hornet is excellent. I will have to test Nemo's new chair, but I too consider myself a Floor Gremlin.
One thing on the Grayl is that it purifies, not just filters. So it removes viruses and some chemicals. Admittedly most places people go they aren’t at risk of water borne viruses.
I’m off to Africa next month, so yeah, I’m taking mine 😊
This is just great!
I need to plan a trip entitled “Where in Washington is Miranda?” So I can get a sticker. … and say hello.
make Rainer compare his kit XD I like Eric's pack though that's a rad pack. but i think I'd get Miranda's set up o3o
I loved this!! It's a tie for me, I love the gear and the personalities. I'm definitely a "gadget pack rat" so Miranda's gadgets won me over, but Eric's setup is refreshing to see for the not-so-UL trips!
You guys are hilarious. This was a great video. Cheers.
The dual sternum straps are a GAME CHANGER! I’d only seen them on their running packs… I got one if their hunt style packs and truly feel the weight is worth it. Even if you have ultralight gear, it’s gonna carry it better.
Love that Eric brought out the mystery ranch backpack ! I have a friend who loves his for backpacking due to the quality and durability . Best fit.
I like the featherweight tent- hopefully it will get back in stock.
I hope you two continue to make videos together. Love both of you. I vote for Miranda’s tent (although she got the idea from Eric). Also love how she accessorizes her gear. But love the price of some of Eric’s gear.
I LOVE my Enlightened Equipment Convert quilt. Had it for three years and will never look back.
seems like there's a lot of EE fans out there!
... Watch out Eric ,, I heard she trains with Mr Miyagi .. "packs in ,, packs off" ...
haha, she is a worthy opponent!
Eric, I like that you’re still packing the campingmoon stove.
It has been boiling so fast for me with petril pot, this summer, even boiling big pots of whole corn on cob.
Yep! It's honestly a fantastic stove and it's my go-to for sure now.
are you backpacking with whole corn on the cob?! legendary!
@@eric_hanson Yup corn, steak, twice baked potatoes it's all about priorities!
I am so fascinated by the Bridger backpack!!!
It's still a super interesting pack! And while I still like it, I did notice that since I have trended towards the UL side of things, the Bridger now feels a little more like overkill. But it did handle 50 lbs reeaally well!
try Seal Skinz for sleep socks if you like the insulated booties, they double down as good back up gear for something like a rainy day
Always love Miranda's backpack set up. She makes backpacking seem cozy.
I even have a few similar items. Such as the solar blow-up lantern. Mine is color changing, though. I like the bear can so I don't over pack food for a trip.
I agree that a mix and match of both your stuff would be awesome.
I like your sleeping bag. Not sure if I'm a quilt type of girl. The Featherstone tent you have has been sold out for a few weeks now on Amazon, but the one person is still available but going fast. Perhaps they will have more available next season.?
Who wins this round... Rainer, for holding the camera for you guys...lol
I'm hoping you guys did a video of the trip. You all seem to have such a fun time together. Stay safe and have fun.
Love seeing two "you tubers" sharing the stage in a positive way.
There's a saying "The lighter the gear, the lighter your wallet"😅
The Grayl is a purifier (filters out virus, etc) So it is way beyond a lifestraw. I found it to be a bit fussy and if you want to fill multiple bottles, there is a higher chance of contamination. For 1.75 oz more I have the MSR Guardian.
Agree with Eric. Two person tent is the way to go.
Always good ideas from Miranda and Eric.
Thanks guys ( you too Rainer)
The burp sealed the victory.
Took a crew of scouts too Philmont scout ranch, I couldn’t go on trek caus e they said I was overweight. But I handed of my LMNT too my scouts, it may be made by LMNT, HOWEVER, my scouts refer too the packets as Peter’s magical salts. They full on went D&D quest using the LMNT as the health potion.
Who's the they that said you were too overweight? While certain health conditions may affect people's ability to safely be out in the wild, there are ways for bigger people to also enjoy backpacking! But I love the creativity of "magical salts" haha brilliant!
@@eric_hansonits a BSA thing due to liabilties they don't want to cover in an emergency situation. It stinks but it's what the world has come to due to a litigious society.
@@eric_hanson scouting reg say an adult of 69” in height must be no more than 220 pounds in weight for High Adventure camping. Never mind I’d dropped from 270 down too 250 and reduced from a 44” waist too 42” (41”depending on water weight). In the critique that they have us fill out after our hide venture experience, I did mention that the average army, or Marine Corps heavy machine, gunner or motorman weigh in as much as I do and that they should change their requirements may be put in a physical fitness test. But it’s OK. I’ll get back out there and I’ll show them a thing or two.
@@eric_hansonPhilmont is a BSA High Adventure program where crews of 12 scouts and adult leaders backpack 10-15 miles per day for 7-12 days at 7000-12,000 feet elevation. They have a maximum weight for participants based on height to help insure they are fit for the trek.
The height/weight requirement is well publicized, and crews reserve treks 18 months in advance. it’s not a surprise that you learn about when you show up. Or at least it shouldn’t be.
This actually was amazing cause I found things in both packs that I loved and will probably get. So a combination of both sides❤
I love seeing you all together, I hope you do more!
Eric and Miranda saying their two favorite LMNT flavors are the two I absolutely CANNOT stand. 😂 I'd happily trade for watermelon or mango chili.
I have that exact same Nemo tent. The footprint size was what attracted me to this tent. I can fit it into some very small campsites. If you get claustrophobic, don't consider this tent - it is small. Also, one of the best colors for a tent that I've used. Relatively low-impact, but allows light to come in at about the right amount for me.
The cracking sound as Eric stands up 😂
I relate to the 1-P tent because I am SO particular about my stuff. Everything has to be in its spot 👌
After enduring a painful shoulder while using 2 different ultralight backpacks, I got the Bridger based on Christi's recommendation. I love it. No more shoulder pain. It's worth the extra weight.
oh nice! That's great to hear!
Yes!!! That Labyrinth reference!
Eric said pillow correctly! Good job Eric!
I love my Nemo Aurora 2P tent. It’s super spacious and love the light diffusing pocket for my headlamp.
Mystery Ranch packs are my favorite (I own two Bridgers and a Terraframe 65L), yes they are heavy but they are so comfortable, I do switch to my ultralight Atom Packs Mo50 from time to time too
Hi Miranda! Nemo is awesome. I had the same issue with my tensor. Nemo replaced it with the new all season at no cost and even paid for return shipping. I had it back in my hands in 5 days!
Consecutive Eric Hanson videos without a burp: 0
WAIT I LOVE THIS HAHA!!
I like the vid. Good explanation of weight to compfortability.
My two favorite pieces of gear I use are my Backpack and Tent.
My backpack is the pilgrim ultralight Roan, it is expensive, however it is fully customizable. You can pick between 3 different internal storage capacities, 40L, 45L, and 55L, with an extra 12L or so of extra storage on the outside. It has a carbon fiber frame, and can supposedly comfortably carry 45 lbs and a max of 50 lbs. I haven’t tested it to those limits.
My tent is kinda controversial, not in the sense of what tent it is but because of how i modified it. I use the Durston X-Mid Pro 2, but I cut out the netting and floor and made it so I could use the regular X-Mid 2 inner. I didn’t care for how particular I had to be in order to manage condensation, but I really like the dyneema fly material, so I fused the two and made a double wall X-Mid Pro 2.
It’s so magical that Miranda’s favorite beverage is also a treatment for the condition she has! I didn’t think she could become a better ambassador for LMNT but I was wrong. 😂
Contact eye lens case if a game changer. Always trying to find ways to carry less, ointment, sunscreen, lotion. But I still want to carry it...... Thank you
I'm definitely scrounging for my old contact case (I had lasik too) and using this on my next trip!
I love my Bridger backpack for long water hauls on the Arizona trail
Hey, I got the featherstone granite 2p tent as well! I think it's great for two person backpacking. My adventure partner and I split the weight together so it doesn't seem so cumbersome. I particularly like how spacious the inside feels and being able to keep the rainfly off when it's hot and dry.
Loved this video. 2 of my farv's. As a novice, I leam so much. THANK YOU ! Quick question Eric, did you use an Ursack vs. the Canister?
OBTW I'm half way through the icicle Divide. ❤
Trace mineral drops is my go-to electrolytes
Miranda, age will come for you, too. Enjoy the journey!
Eric you definitely hit the groups of men and women that are outdoors ppl additional to backpacking as hunters, fishermen and photographers. You also are hit a more popular market. Miranda is definitely hitting the market for most women and older folks.
Eric please keep looking for budget gear this will get more ppl out and majority are either weekenders or section hikers. Great job yo both of you!
Trail on! TNT AT 86
You know, Miranda mentioned LMNT helping with the migraines, but as a woman with dysautonomia (POTS being one category of dysautonomia) I am so glad I got into using LMNT. It actually works well for me and I faint quite a bit and have a few comorbid dx that makes the dysautonomia struggle more tedious with backpacking. (Sjrogrens syndrome, EDS, Bradycardia)
I had one instance early on in my dysautonomia diagnosis where I went hiking, collapsed, and couldn't get back off the trail safely. My phone was on 14% and EMS had a tough time getting to me. I have long term head injury issues from fainting and hitting my head so much because of dysautonomia and that instance taught me the hard way that "no pain no gain" is such a dangerous phrase and that you need to listen to your body.
I am so sorry to hear that Miranda has POTS, but I had a suspicion... while it sucks, I am glad I am not alone. Dysautnomia can be disabling and life changing especially if you end up being one of the lucky folks that doesn't "grow out of it" (some people do lose the dysautonomia issues after a few years, but I have had it since 2015 so...). Once again, Miranda making me feel validated.
I'm a little surprised I haven't seen you take the Radix around more often. I know you love mystery ranch. That pack has piqued my curiosity a few times
Miranda's setup is my fav 👌 great video!!
I’ve been waiting for this for so long!!!!!!!🤍
eric has more stuff id use, im not into ultralight, i do a mix of bushcraft with backpacking so having more rugged heavy stuff doesnt bother me.
21 seconds in, and I'm going to go ahead and guess that Miranda mentions pooping 11 times. I'll come back at the end to see how close I was
I've been cheated
@@ja2595😂
Eric your videos are always delivering amazing content… going on my first backpacking trip this October !
aw thanks! I'm so glad to hear that. And that's amazing! Where you headed?
@@eric_hanson I’m going to try a small section of the north country trail in the pictured rocks of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula!
A neck gaiter works as an easy pillowcase! Also works as a tube top or headband if you’re desperate enough 😂
I utilized a couple of Miranda’s DIY vids for my recent motorcycle bike camping trip. I’ve been binging on “new school backpacking” vids. All my equipment is ~20 yrs old. I needed ideas how to utilize what I have while minimizing volume (not necessarily weight) as possible. I’d def love to upgrade (update) my tent & sleeping bag or possibly switch to a quilt. You guys are giving me so many great ideas! Hell, even my down booties are “out dated” & bulky! 😂. Question, though. I don’t recall if it was this vid or the Utah OA gear test vid, but you mentioned putting your pillow inside your mummy bag hood while sleeping not being ideal. Would you elaborate?
The “Atta-Boy” part 😂😂
If you have not seen them, I recommend epic water filters. Could be a lighter and easier option for your water filter.
One of my most favorite pieces of gear is with Erik and that is the Grayl titanium water filter, wich I have also, but not only is it a water filter it's also a water purifier. It not only takes out the bacteria but also removes viruses that may be in the water, not heard of viruses around here but it does a great job. May be why the price is so high Great video enjoyed watching very much.
I have 2 Bridger packs and love them. Super comfy
I love Miranda's fun accessories, but in terms of price/weight/durability balance factors, I actually like Eric's gear more! With my particular body needs, gear that gives me more space, more adjust-ability, and more efficient weight transfer helps SO MUCH with pain and fatigue, in a way that just saving on weight really doesn't.
She's such a great personality.
Miranda is one of the best!
Will you be at GORP in October? That would be awesome!
Omg what camping spot is this??? It’s picture perfect!
