Here’s an interesting thing, if the Trem unit is balanced correctly and the Trem lock is off and you break a string all you have to do is lock the Trem and the guitar should go back in tune again. Apparently Leo designed it that way.

@@barkinstarfish When you're spending custom shop money there's an allure to getting something vintage correct. When the specialness of that wears off you can start to notice the playability issues with certain vintage parts. I personally wouldn't do it, but it's probably not as uncommon as it seems.

Stock vintage style Jazzmasters and Jaguars use the “threaded rod” individually adjustable saddles.
The other bridge like what was put on is a Mustang bridge.
The saddles do not adjust individually, fixed radius.
A Mastery bridge is the best option...!!!

FYI for those interested. that switch on a JM vibrato wasn't designed to be a synchronous switch(although you can use it this way). As Dave mentioned, you adjust the spring tension until the guitar is exactly in tune when you slide the switch out. When you tab the switch back in, it should slide exactly under the tab such that you don't even hear a click.
The purpose of this design is not to achieve a synchronous vibrato, but to be a countermeasure against string breaks!
The JM vibrato is designed to float(and it floats really beautifully when balanced right).
If you have the tab switch calibrated properly, if you snap a string, you just throw that switch and the guitar stays in tune so that you can finish the song or set while in tune. Try it! It really works!

I put a “Mastery Bridge” on my original 1963 Fender Jazzmaster, big difference. It’s gold with the matching headstock. Sweeeet guitar, ballsy pickups.

  • @sullsurfer
    @sullsurfer Před 2 lety

I read somewhere that Leo Fender admitted that the threaded saddle bridge was a design flaw.
I don't disagree. I did use it on my Jaguar for quite a while. Once I got it set up right, it worked okay for me,
but the string spacing never seemed quite right, and the saddles would work their way out of adjustment after a while.
I think the Staytrem bridge is what Fender would have done if they had known at the time. Its the best solution IMHO.

From Leo: The original bridges did look like they were made from pieces or threaded rod. I filed the slots deeper with a fine triangle file on a bunch of them, before I found out about the Mustang style bridge. One of mine I have made solid bushings to hold a roller bridge. It is by far more stable, but tradition sells, innovation is considered sacrilege. I always felt if a guy wants a worn looking and feeling guitar, just stop at every pawn shop you can find. They sell worn guitars at those places.

It is easier to accept what is than stay chronically annoyed with something that you cannot change. • @TheAxe4Ever

Enjoyed the video. I always wondered about what the trem on a Jazzmaster looked like inside. I totally agree about the truss rod working better with the adjustment closer to the body rather than the headstock. I found they work better with adjusting the neck properly. Which is why I like how Charvel, Music Man and others do it with the adjustment wheel at the end of the neck. Saves taking the neck off and you can make small adjustments on the fly at a gig if the temperature changes drastically.

The bridge on it looked a standard Jazzmaster but the one you put on looked like a Mustang bridge to me.
Trussrod adjustments I think on headstock for ease, vs this vintage Fender way. But fixed if you design a spoke wheel type like Fender did use briefly in the Elite series.

Staytrem & Mustang > "Memery" bridge. A far east company needs to bang out some mastery clones, or something similar, with decent quality for $30-50 a pop - for fun, I'd bite. They have the ability to make decent machined parts. Hell, Staytrems weren't much more than that price range.
Threaded vintage for the vibe though. Hassle to set up, but if you use loctite, you only have to set it up once. I get along with mine fine with heavy use. Not worth it for everyone, I understand.
Even mastery bridges are known to sometimes suffer from the "saddle sinking" problem though, so some players have to put loctite on them. Heh funny world.

Agreed. I never understood the appeal of having a fake "old" guitar. I mean, what the hell, it's A FAKE!!!!

I was shocked, shocked I say, to see a skilled craftsman such as yourself unscrewing the screws for the tremolo plate with a manual screwdriver. Shocked.

Quickest way to make a JM bridge worse is to skip passed the original or mustang bridge and put a TOM style on it like the Vintera Modified. And people seem to love the J Masics JMs and they have em too! Seems bad ideas get turned into reality quite often
