Dang Larry really hanging with the locals, I miss hearing people with the pidgin accent I miss my family who live on the islands, they where the 1st to introduce me to drifting and JDM culture back in the late 90s.
In 87 my dad bought a 77 toyota pick up with a blown motor and factory 5spd.
I remember our neighbor and me helping him replacing the motor in 1 weekend and the neighbor painting the grill goldish copper. We owned that truck for 4yrs and then later on trading it for a 92 Nissan single cab 5spd truck that we owned for 2yrs. In 93 my dad traded it for a new Mazda B2300 kingcab chapman edition. We traveled everywhere with that little truck with the family, she was dependable.
Then in 96 my dad used as a trade a bought a extended cab Ford F250 powerstroke diesel truck. Yeah, our family was a truck, van and car owners.
That '71 is soo good!! The front end is so unique looking
i lived in hawaii back in the late 70's to early 80's and car craze was all about bugs... i still love visiting and miss all the aloha spirit..
In regards to that Subaru SVX, you are correct. All of them left the factory with an automatic (because Subaru didn't have a strong enough manual at the time of production). I remember a lot of chatter 15 to 20 years ago on the Subaru forums about manual swapping SVXs with a transmission from an older Legacy/Outback

SVX only came in automatic but it’s becoming more and more popular to swap a wrx or legacy manual transmission into it cause it just bolts straight to the bell housing and the only major work you gotta do at that point is mess with the pedals and electronics

Waikiki gets most of the useless revving because those guys like to give tourists a show and annoy the crap out of them as a "welcome to hawaii". Although usually its 4 bangers and some of them got some nasty pop tunes.
