  • Join me for an ultra high definition real time driving tour of the Moki Dugway on Utah Route 261.
    The Moki Dugway is located along Utah Route 261 near the Valley of the Gods. It is called a dugway because it is dug into the side of the cliff in a series of switchbacks.
    Most of Route 261 is paved, but large portions of the Moki Dugway itself are not paved. The road is steep and has very tight turns for the corners.
    The Moki Dugway is three miles long and gains 1,200 feet of elevation. It is an 11% grade. It was built in the 1950's by a mining company to extract ore from the region. It is now mostly used by tourists visiting the nearby Valley of the Gods.
    For anyone with a fear of heights, driving along the Moki Dugway could be quite scary. However, in good weather with a well maintained personal vehicle the drive should be fine and the views make the drive worth it.
    Drivers must go slowly and pay close attention to the road. I would not recommend the Moki Dugway route for anyone driving a long vehicle or towing another vehicle. You also might not have phone reception in the area.
    I hope you enjoy this drive along the Moki Dugway!

    Today I played this at 0.25, started the treadmill did 30 minutes and the video was at 7:45, then I sat down to relax and watch the rest of the 14:26 at normal speed. I guess I like this drive going down a bit more than going up. When I go down, I want to do the left and drive through the valley of the gods. When I go up, I want to do the left and go out to muley point. Either way, it's all good. I watch these several times a year. As of now I haven't had anyone stop at the top where the big turn is with all the concrete and fence, stop, and then take video OVER that guardrail. Thanks for recording and posting this for everyone to enjoy.

    Just did this drive a few days ago, going up Moki Dugway. Careful don't let the beautiful views distract you. Lucky there are places to pull over to take in all of the beauty that part of Utah has to offer. One of the more beautiful yet white knuckle drives here in our beautiful state! Thanks for the video! It captures it very well!

    Years ago I visited the West for the first time and a friend drove me down this road. The view below was stunning, but I missed most of it because my eyes were closed!

    Which direction are you headed in this video? North or south on HWY 261?

    Thank you for sharing this fantastic impression of the Moki Dugway. It was on our tour plan for mid March this year, but we skipped it because we come with a C-Class RV. Do you think it is doable with that kind of vehicle and mid March? We are careful by not scary drivers.

    • @DeceleratedTravel
      @DeceleratedTravel  Před rokem +1

      I think the general guidelines are nothing towed and nothing over 28 feet long. The turns are pretty sharp for a longer vehicle to make. I think you might have made the right choice to go the other way.

      @@DeceleratedTravel We did it with a 32 foot 12 Ton Class A downwards, no problem at all.

    Thanks for sharing. Headed there in early april. Question....do you feel it was a safe drive if someone is careful? I am so scared of heights and will be traveling alone, but this trip is all about getting out of my comfort zone so its on my list of must do's.

    • @DeceleratedTravel
      @DeceleratedTravel  Před 2 lety

      I'm not sure what it is like in bad weather, but on a sunny day it was perfectly fine. This particular road is wider than a lot of roads with switchbacks. I would not attempt it in an RV or pulling a trailer. I think you will have a great trip!
