This is Sarah Chen's major hit song, 'Questions,' a controversial song. It came from her 1994 album 'The Dearest of Sarah,' with her performing it live for the first time in 1992. Sung from the perspective of a generic 'woman,' the lyrics place the woman in an unequal relationship, sacrificing her youth and life for the man while remaining naive and unquestioning. The general reference to 'woman' rather than 'I' gives the song sweeping powers.
This song put Chen, a strong advocate for gender equality, in a difficult position. At the time, Sarah Chen was with Rock Records colleagues on a concert tour in China. Within days of the song being written, Chen learned it and performed it live. Refusing to perform the song was not an option. It would have been a career-ending decision. Plus, Chen had just regained her strengthen following a long illness; there was a lot for her to do. In addition, the song was written and someone was going to perform it. There must be smarter solutions than becoming a martyr.
Sarah Chen cleverly solved the problem by giving the song a dignified interpretation, departing from the lyrics. In the live performance, she showed so much pride and dignity that it was as if she were singing 'The Greatest Love of All.' Though she excelled at conveying deep emotions, there was no heart-wrenching, hand-wringing, or self-pity. Chen's interpretation was so contrary to the lyrics that her version didn't completely dominate CZcams. Later, sadder covers were viewed about a quarter as much as Chen's, rather than 1/40th as in 'Dream to Awakening.'
By creating a dignified rather than self-pitying version as the original, Sarah Chen set the tone for the song’s interpretation. In doing so, she not only maintained her dignity but also preserved the dignity of a generic woman.
