  • 2022 marks the Centenary of Scammell Lorries Limited. Up to1922 the company was called G. Scammell & Nephew. Scammell started in Spitalfields, East London, before moving to Tolpits Lane, Watford, Hertfordshire. Since closure of the factory, redevelopment has taken place. The names of Scammell and its products are remembered in the street names of the new housing estate built on the site - Scammell Way, Pioneer Way and Crusader Way.
A celebration of the Centenary took place on the 1st May 2022, on an overcast day, with only 30 or 40 Scammell lorries, far short of the 100 hoped for. The venue was the King George V Playing Fields, Tolpits Lane, not far from the site of the factory.

My father worked at Scammells in the 60s as a fitter /welder, on weekends he would take me to the Busy Bee Cafe on the A41 for a cup of tea and a look at the [ now classic ] motorcycles.
There was usually a Pickfords Scammell [constructor] parked in the lay-by beside the cafe and sometimes a giant swan neck trailer would be left there. Another place to see heavy
haulage was Wally's Cafe just up from the Busy Bee. I was lucky enough to go on probably the last open day at Scammells back in the late 70s or early 80s.Open days in Industry
just don't happen anymore. Another famous name from Watfords industrial heritage.

As with everything, things change and not always for the best it seems. At least you have your memories! It's sad to think all those individual transport cafes have been replaced by generic motorway services.

Official count was 27 Scammells in total.
We would have loved more but it was a popular weekend for events and fuel costs are high at the moment so we were overjoyed with the support from vehicle owners and visitors!
