Beautiful and original, however the S is for the 'twin carb' model. SE relates to fuel injection which came out a couple of years later and the 220 'without' a letter was the straight6 single carb original version. I know this because my father 'back in the day' worked for Mercedes as well as owning fixing and selling many of them in his time off.;-) I was a 5 year old and for many years after was my Dad's best buddy and when he used to deliver new and repaired Mercs back to their lucky owners, he used to take me too ;-) so gratefully I grew up around most models of those beautiful Marques. Great memories and thank you for posting this video ;-)
Hi tisme Denis, Thank you for viewing, sharing your memories and knowledge. Regarding he post, you're welcome, Lou
That was weird how it was mentioned TWICE by the owner, yet was CLEARLY carbureted. Probably twin downdraft strombergs.
😍 that dash
You're right, just amazing the work involved.
just lovely !
Happy to read "just lovely !" :-)
@@loucostabile I really love this car. The quality of construction reminds me the Continental Mark II. Adjustment of the body, the chrome surround on the door panels, the chrome panel in the door jams ... that's a monument.
Beautiful car. My dad had the SE version. Remember it doing 100 mph no problems.
Hi dougallitt, Glad you like the looks of this one, and thank you for sharing your first hand experience with the car :-) Lou
Dad's was the same blue above the side chrome and cream below. Always remember the beautiful wood dashboard and the front seats were just like armchairs. They could be wound back to make a bed. They just don't make'm like that anymore!
The "S" cars were carburetored. The "SE" versions were fuel injected.
Hi ajksfda, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
You're welcome. I watch a lot of your vids. Good stuff. The "E" stands for "einspritz" (not sure of spelling) which is German for "injection" or something to that effect. I had a '59 coupe of that model that was the "SE". That car you looked at is a VERY expensive piece, and all original! Crazy!
A word on nomenclature. The W180 chassis (on which this 220 S is built) was the first Mercedes-Benz which employed the suffix "S" to represent "Sonderklasse", essentially "special class". This status was given to 220 vehicles equipped with dual carburetors (which the featured car clearly has). A delightful period piece in an attractive color.
Hi Andrew Graham, Big smile on my face reading / learning from your comment. Thank you, Lou
Incredible beauty! But.... what a terrible shame that these guys really don't now anything about cars and Mercedes in particular! First Lou noticed that it has two carburettors, a few minutes later he asks if the 'S' relates to injection (no clear answer).... and at the end the guys explain that the 'S' stands for Super because of the fuel injection, haha! Never seen a car with carburation AND fuel injection! The 'S' stands for Super and relates to the dual carburation instead of the single carburettor in the model 220(a). The model 220SE had fuel injection, the 'E' stands for 'Einspritz', that is German for injection.
Hi Lajos279, The benefit is we're always learning. Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
You're welcome Lou! Sorry if I sounded perhaps somewhat too negative. Best of luck! Lajos.
I thought you shared good information. I appreciate it, Lou
Ive grown up around Mercedes my whole life so far and there no better quality then an Vintage Mercedes its second to none that' S should have stood for Superior quality
A Fan of the Brand,. Thanks for sharing your experience, Lou
No Trouble at all Lou! After all
I am a car guy
We have that in common, thanks for watching the Chanel, Lou
❤️ ❤️ ❤️ 👌 🤣
Happy to see you enjoy this car :-)
Engine sounds terrible with a noisy timing chain (the whining noise). The finish on the dash is not original. And its definitely not fuel injection. So what's going on here?
Hi John, Clearly this one is not for you :-( Hope you see many more cars on this CZcams Channel you'll enjoy :-) Lou
