  • BOHO AS IT WAS! | ANTIQUE VINTAGE SHOPPING | RESELLER VLOG
We go in an unexpected direction in this episode! A route I've never taken leads to a surprising old ethnic village full of vintage stores, a great place to hunt for things we can flip for a profit while learning about true Bohemian antiques! We find some real BOLO's (Be On the LookOut for these items), and a few things to avoid as well (what's that smell?).
Czech Village is a fun and hip shopping and entertainment district today, but this section of Cedar Rapids has long the been center of Bohemian, Czech and Slovak culture in this region. We find real BoHo in the shops here, from intricately carved 19th century frames and crucifixes to painted figures and boxes, bright Czech pottery and deep garnet jewelry! Even the Mucha inspired painting on one building speaks of the design legacy of the Bohemians, some aspects of which live on today in the BoHo styles of American stylists like CZcams's ‪@leftcoastrevivals‬.
But there's much more to find on this shop with me in the variety of vintage, antique and consignment shops we find in this sweet historic district! We even stumble across a "Thriftmas" sale as we uncover Juliana and Czech jewelry, a faux pearl tie, a 1960s decorated purse and other fun things we can resell for a profit. Fenton glass, an amazing pair of signed lucite candle pillars and handsome Victorian furniture that could serve great purpose today all find their way to our consideration, as we fill the van on our way to shows in the west. A final stop for some family genealogy wraps up this day of unexpected antique diversions!
Here's some more of what we find on our reseller shopping journey:
Eggleston pirate girl ad calendar, barn visitors sign, zither, cranberry epergne base, Colony Antigua vase, Prague garnet studded cap, Pilgrim cranberry glass, Czech and Slovak folk costumes, wood dolls, painted Bohemian boxes, Tonala duck, Gilbert stove timer, child size deck chair, RS Prussia bowl, art nouveau washstand pitcher, Bluebird of Happiness votive, shaker sets, Treasure Craft Smiley Face, Czech folk dolls and wooden characters, Bohemian carved wood spice sets and wall racks, Smurf figures, Czech glass perfumes, Bohemian carved ruby flash decanter sets, 1920s canister sets, Ladislav Oliva signed modernist vase, Bohemian wall plates and plaques, Lodge/Griswold/Wagner cast iron cookware, MCM chrome desk lamp, vintage baseball caps, tap and die sets, 1930s wood scotty cigarette set, 1980s threaded glass vase, vintage luggage, brass cash register, vintage elephants, Presidential collector plates, pest sprayer, Steubenville Ivory dinnerware, Amana Colonies jug, California Originals cookie jar, Mr. Peanut bank, American oak side-by-side cabinet, Chatty Cathy cutouts, Labelle Pottery bud vase, triple mirror 1890s dresser, blue/green 1970s couch, Czech scale and grinders, 1980s owl necklace, Sommerso controlled bubble vase, red poppy 1940s tin canisters and cake stand, Weller ombre vase, battleship cribbage board, Rosenthal Studio Line vase, etc.

I so enjoyed your tour of the Czech community as both my sets of grandparents migrated for Czechoslovakia via the Galveston, Texas ports when entering the county. Our family has numerous antique pieces that were from our grandparents. I was brought up in a Czech home with many family gatherings and lots of Czech food. My Dad and aunts and uncles would actually make their own kielbasa at our house just like their parents did. Love Check dolls as I have several that were given to me as a child and can't forget all of the quilts that I have from my ancestors. You are so informative and love watching your video!👍🏻😀❤

Good evening, George! There was a painting of an egret in flight, on the wall with the calendar, that I liked. That R S Prussia bowl was really pretty. My favourite R S Prussia pieces are the "Reflecting Waterlilies" on the icicle mold. I actually have that beehive S & P set, and I have a set that didn't come with the holder. Both sets are made in Occupied Japan. I like beehive items. Years ago, my dad was a beekeeper. Loved that crucifix! I have a substantial collection of them, and that one would make a great addition. I have a Czech glass pitcher and tumblers that are ruby cut to amber. It has oak leaves and acorns on it, and I really like it. That carved mirror is fantastic! I have my granddad's spray duster from the 1940s...and still use it. That Victorian dresser, with the side mirrors and doored compartments, was nice and interesting. Loved that ruby decanter with the four stems! At $169.00...it would've likely come home with me. Sounds like you needed a little Febreeze in that basement🤢😆 There were a lot of things there that caught my eye. Thanks for the take-along!!!

There is a lot of Czech influence in this region of Iowa. Dvorak (Czech composer) spent a summer in Spillville, IA, in 1893, about an hour and a half north of there, and there is a lot of Czech ancestry. I live about 2 hours north of Cedar Rapids, so you were close! And as always, I learned so much. Hi George! I'm from NE Iowa & 1/2 Czech. My grandparents were from Protivin, IA. They lived on a farm between Cresco & Protivin. Always used to speak in Czech when they didn't want the grandkids to know what they were saying. Ha! Ha!
I think the smelly basement may be leftover from a flood that they had in CR maybe 10 years ago...I'm really bad with dates. I've been to a lot of those stores so it was really fun to hear your take on things! Thanks!
If you ever get around Spillville, IA, they have Bily Clocks that might interest you. It's on the web if you want to see some pictures.

My husbands 3rd Great Grand parents lived in Manly. They had a large family and some stated there and some left there. Their name were Trebilcock.

Interesting! I wish there was someone left from that time to ask among the Higby's whether they knew each other. My family was there about 6 years.

having spent a lot of time in WV I have been wondering how long it would take someone to call the resellers on their pronunciation of this. and Tone all ah was right after that! someone farther down in the comments is saying it only has 2 syllables. I don't remember that being true. I remember it your way. or ka NA wah.

@@lauramoonwoman I grew up near the WV/KY border so the Kanawha River was always prominent in the news, even in our area. I've never heard a two-syllable version, either. lol I figured George would appreciate the correction since he does seem to run across that maker quite often in his travels.

You found some awesome stuff as always, but the Czech element was especially interesting.
That Hall cake carrier made me laugh because I have a big bowl in that pattern -- except it has no flowers at all, just the black leaves. Someone in a great pottery FB group explained that it was the red poppy pattern and the actual poppies must have come off in the dishwasher. Whoops!

Besides a possible dead animal in the walks, I wonder if the basement has a mold problem, hiding under the floor coverings. Did you mention the strong odor to the staff?

I feel like the Blue Mountain pottery is very boring. Love the Black/orange.

    • @TheAntiqueNomad
      @TheAntiqueNomad  Před rokem +2

I think it depends on the piece...there's some lava glaze and silver glaze Blue Mountain that is really unusual and scarce and different than the norm. Also, they came out with a pitcher in 1947 that Lenox essentially copied in 1953 and won a "new design of the year" award for, so I give them some credit

When you show a piece that you think we’re interested.
Please keep the item STEADY:(😫. It’s Very difficult to see.
Do you not look back at what you’re recording???
I do appreciate your time to educate us but when your hand is moving up and down it’s difficult to read the price label. Thank you.😅

I understand, that episode was a particularly difficult one because we tried a different film processor that was supposed to make things more stable and it had the opposite effect. We aren't able to tell when filming because the screen is so small that we can't tell until we process the video. We did not use that processor again, so it should be better in most other videos
