Having played oboe for 60 years, I know the instrument. Normally I am not fond of the baroque oboe, but this young lady's performance is the finest baroque oboe playing I have EVER heard. Her tone is wonderful, and her technique is that of a true master. People have asked about the differences between the baroque oboe and the modern oboe. The modern instrument has a thinner bore which when coupled with the keywork gives an extended upper range to the instrument. Baroque reeds are wider and flatter than modern reeds. Modern reeds have a much wider range of cuts than baroque reeds, extremes being American reeds without any bark, and thin French reeds without much of a backbone or heart. The more elliptical cross section gives the modern reed much more versatility when it comes to the types of cut. I tend to be quite critical of oboists. Ms. Vertommen should be quite honoured by what I have said about her. I hope that we hear much more from her, and that she has the long and illustrious career she so richly deserves and which we can all enjoy.
Astounding, Nele Vertommen not only plays with astoundingly beautiful phrasing but she also makes it all look effortless. I don't recall seeing any current Baroque oboist able to do this at this level. This piece is beautiful, tricky and at times monstrously difficult. Bravo for a wonderful interpretation from the soloist and the equally talented ensermble. Today was my birthday and I stumbled on to this video - what a gift - thanks to all of you! If you take a close look at the literally final seconds of the respective videos, it’s particularly clear. Apart from being highly-gifted and impressive young musicians making great performances, they share an infectious enthusiasm, energy and excitement (while keeping their feet firmly on the ground) which makes them engaging communicators of their art, and which should hopefully encourage other talented musicians to follow in their food-steps…
Voor ons was het ook een soort verrassing. Een week voor de opname hoorden we dat ons kerstconcert geannuleerd werd. We hebben dan besloten een opname in dezelfde bezetting (-kinderkoor) te doen. We stelden een lijst samen van zo'n 20 onbekende hoboconcerti... en dan was het oefenen geblazen...
That yound lady's lung are capable of generating some serious and elegant baroque badassery, without having to inhale that much often as one might expect. I think she underwent some Shaolin training, in Tibet, to be able to endure for that astounding period of time. Incredibile performance by all of them; it's so mesmerizing to watch and hear. The harpsicord player, whose posture is impeccable, might have traded his soul for his talent, but I can't properly tell; his name's translation, in italian, means prode condottiero or a savior who audaciuosly protects others, being higly regarded by the folks. The string section is exepcional and their bow might be an actual one, who knows. Cheers from Italy, thanks for keeping all this music flowing

This oboe sounds lower than standarts oboes. Sounds different than modern ones. I like more the sound. It is less nasal.
