I listen to this song and others from him and to me he takes guitar playing to levels of almost spiritual interaction. Music that I've heard him play for decades still gives me shivers and raises the hair on my arms. No other single guitar player does that for me. Every song he does is a story but it's also like a 5 minute dream.
I've just read your comments about the great Mr vai..I total agree with you.. I know he's playing notes like other guitarist.but his notes just really do something for me. I can't explain. I JUST FEEL IT...
+geoffrey welsby well I can explain it to you,...he takes his time with every note and really adds a lot of love to his playing,....he doesn't just breeze through the notes he treats every one as if it's important,..even the fast stuff .....
brilliantly said Sam, some of he's songs bring me to tears almost.
Oh yeah Sam, i feel u. But i found 2 other gods who can give you the dream sound that your ears are craving. Mattrach is a pure genius and he always find the good notes. Even his composition he did when he was 17 and was playing all the instruments are fucking masterpieces, you really need to check him out. And of course, some of Satriani’s slow songs i listen every week, especially Love Thing. I don’t know why but that song drives me nuts
Don't forget Cesar Huesca. Been watching him since he was about 14. He's all grown up now. freaking amazing.
I've watched this maybe 100 times. ..
It is offensive how great Vai is. People - we have a literal Mozart/Beetoven among us.
Whenever I visit other channels and hear from the best youtube has to offer, I always come back to Vai and it is STUNNING how far advanced Steve is compared to anyone who thinks they will have a legacy in 40 years.
How lucky are we?
Jack Butler 'dun loves us.
People hear the word 'virtuoso' and get scared. I've seen countless comments out Vai saying how he plays without feeling at a million miles a hour when modest and amazing songs like this are thoughout his catalogue.
My dad said something to me which makes sense now, "A true musician will make the instrument talk" And it is from listening to guys like Steve Vai that make this ring true xD A true artist in every sense of the word, and its also why he is such an awesome dude.
a true musician can make his fart talk too!
Tay tyty That would be a tuba player.
One of my favorite guitar songs ever. Supremely underrated Vai tune.
I agree man !!
@@vincenttaylor9691 Me too!
I agree!
There are good guitar players, bad ass guitar players, accomplished giutar players, then there's Steve Vai....... A different level
This is heaven guys, no one feels the music like Steve Vai
All due respect, but I prefer Joe Satriani song composing and melody..
The guitar is the vocalist as well as the instrument. Its amazing what he does.
For me this is peak Vai. A lot of his work gets just plain too weird for my tastes, but the whole Alien Love Secrets album is the pinnacle of accessible song structures, memorable riffs, and sophisticated melodies.
Agree. His abilities is out of this world, but ALS was the peak of his "understandable" music.
Are you two commenters musicically educated? Not a bash...no better than thou stuff.. but just saying, yes, he gets "weirder" but western music is used to 4/4 and major or minor key. He loves..Lydian. and on his albums after this, he experiments with all the modes, time signatures, etc..which sounds weird to people who just listen to western music. But...if you play it, learn it or teach it, you understand he's just showcasing that he's knowledgeable in all modes and time signatures. Again..this wasn't a bash response, just my observation as a huge Vai fan, and, as a music teacher! Be blessed, and much love! 🙏🏻
@@pdp7653 that's a great question, my friend! You're right that often the reason people don't like "weird" music - whether that's jazz or prog rock or Nine Inch Nails - is because they haven't been exposed to that level of vocabulary. But for me, it's just a matter of taste. Doesn't bother me if a song wants to change keys or modes or time signatures or even genres. Can you think of any songs that you dislike not because they're too sophisticated but because they just strike you as too "weird" (whatever that word would signify to you)?
Rather ironic everyone here saying this is one of vais more simple songs. however he mentiond during the string theories tour back in 07 this was one of the harder songs for him to nail everytime and dig deep to get his desired effect across. Not trying to get anyone worked up just quoting what he had said specifically about this song.
@@robbyb6380 just speaking as a musician and a composer myself - perhaps you're one too - oftentimes the simplest pieces are the most elegant, and in the most elegant pieces the challenge is not the technical complexity, but rather the EMOTIONAL complexity, and the mountain the performer has to climb is just what you're describing Steve Vai as saying. He doesn't have a problem playing all the notes. The challenge is playing them in a way that communicates all the feelings he wants the listener to experience. That was true for another Vai song called "Hand on Heart" from the album Firegarden. His goal was to play the song with a level of tenderness as if his fingertips were bleeding, and that meant playing at a level that transcended merely playing the song correctly.
The way he plays is also very beautiful to watch..A very pleasing song
I'll say!
This song is deceptively difficult to play, but unbelievably fun and fulfilling. I love this piece!
How long did it take you to learn to play it? And what was your approach if you don't mind me asking.
@@charlesbrown8879 if i may, i learned it by taking small sections, mastering them and then putting them together....it took a lot of time to make it flow like vai does, but very rewarding and one of the only cover songs i practice regularly as it is a tour de force of technique and a masterclass in harmony, melody, and phrasing. If you try to take on too much of it at once, it is overwhelmingly difficult, at least it was for me.
I remember getting the VHS tape of this when it came out. The music on there is still amazing to this day.
The guitar is a natural extension of Vai's body and spirit. It brings me joy to see a person not only find his true purpose, but to lean into it so such a degree that he becomes legend.
I think that all the guitarists love their guitars as intimately part of them because their guitars are the secrets of their souls playing, especially in the play of Steve Vai who expresses so much with the sounds of his guitars. I think that all musicians have a very intimate link with his instrument(s).
I will not deny his genius but I will deny his nipple.
aldersmoke1 hell yeah
If the can shred like that I don't care if he runs around like flea.
:D LOL
Saw him in concert twice, can't wait for the third. Why this hasn't hit 1Billion views yet is boggling... People don't know what their missing..... passion for starters.
we all know that feeling when we are depressed, completety down, sad like you want to die... there is one thing that makes you want to live again... THIS IS IT
No one writes more beautiful guitar music than Vai.
Low light, this on full screen and high volume. Much needed awesomeness...
Love it! Also adore Steve's "touching tongues". This guy has so much passion it's infectious. How he's able to transfer those emotions to the guitar? Extraordinary!!!
Only the guitar knows. ☮️
Your mom
Greatest guitar player of all time. One of my faves
Top notch stuff. I remember watching this whole dvd over & over when i was a teenager [well vhs actually]. Still love it! Steve Vai = Guitar Royalty.
Everty time I listen to Steve Vai I put my guitar away for about a week.
You can really tell he feels the music when he's playing. It's amazing.
I cannot stop watching this! Why must you be so freaking awesome, Steve? why?
Wow. This MAN is Amazing
😱😁
Trying to imagine what a softer version would sound like. Such a lovely melody.
My dad used to play this song on acoustic guitar and it sound fantastic!
@@OK-sq2oi we want to know how this song sound like on acoustic !
That ending is to die for.
Alexis Zikas I learned this song once on guitar, I remember playing that riff at the end 100 times over trying to get it to sound right
Love this man and this track.
Yes Steve I can listen to song over and over this is a masterpiece at its finest
3:40 I Always thought as a teen that that little lick was an ode to Satriani. Same phrase as the Summer Song
I had the same exact thought
The transition at 1:59 is absolutely amazing.
That could maybe express the "death", (in a second degree) this moment when there's nothing more, before refinding the life much more worthful and the intensity of the melody which goes again.
No kidding, one of my favorite piece of music ever
Vai is the best..... that is the most complex song i've ever heard.... and played flawlessly. He is indeed a master !
One of the best songs ever... I learned how to play this all the way through I love it
I can see that little summer song there in the end haha
Elrond indeed. Just a little hat tip at the end
3:40 hahahaa me too
Ya that was cool!
Iv always thought that and I'm glad I'm not the only person who hears it
make my ears feel so comfort . i love this fuckin song
So smooth and so gorgeous... Every time, it still takes my breath away.
This is my favourite song of all time; can't stop listening to it and can't help being taken by it.
My best Steve vai song!
Many great songs by Mr. Vai, my friend. I want to comment that this one has great phrasing!
1 SmoothMetal7 Yep, couldn't agree more!

Steve is, in this video and in all his productions, one of the 5 greatest guitarists in yhe world. Thank you Steve for sharing your wonderful music with all us, like me, only guitar owners.

Tell me that someone who plays 12 hours a day doesn't love the guitar ? The master ! 😍😍
@@angelicaryans8819 Did your ex sleep or eat?
Wow, what an introduction to Steve Vai. Thanks Steve. It was beautiful. Just beautiful.
This is one of his best pieces in my opinion; well worked out, to the point and no nonsense.
hes fingers move so gracefully. hes unlike any other guitarist, and he is the best
11 years ago wow!
man..........that solo part at 2:00 is so fucking A W E S O M E ..... what a composition ...... i have listened to it so many times and never get bored of it ..........
One of Steve best compositions definitely..
Is it just me or there is something extra magical about that most replayed moment? That brief opening few licks of the solo is incredibly way better than the rest of a really good song.
3:40 Summer song tribute... :P
Amazing musician!!!
He's goofy but sometimes he plays over these Zappa-esque harmonies and its really beatiful.
stunning!
Beautiful Spirit, beautiful Light, beautiful music. Love this...
3:40 - Satriani's Summer Song easter egg?
No. that lick very basic and the popular around blues players.
not special for satriani.
@@kaanuzuner4865 I see your point, but the main theme of Summer Song is the same - it's even in the same tonality as this particular lick. Since SS is so popular song and given the relationship between Vai and Satriani, I still beloeve that the lick is intentipnally similar to SS.
A Poet
I'm in my final year at varsity and work is insane. Whenever I feel like I'm about to pass out from exhaustion I listen to this. It's got this weird feeling of the final hours of an grueling battle thats about to end in victory.
Thanks à lot Steve !
One of the rarest JEM guitars ever made. I had one and sold it recently. I am in mourning mode.
Prototype 1st Edition, no?
You sold it? Silly sausage..! :-p
Tenho 11 anos e toco guitarra um dia quero tocar como ele
I believe you will, young man. Keep your mind clear and your body clean of drugs and too much alcohol. Don't get in your own way. Good luck and God bless. 🎸🎸🎸☮️
"vai" praticando...kkk
I could listen all night to this song. Come to think of it, I pretty much have. Vintage great Vai!
Absolutely gorgeous.
Just melted me again, Steve...
david copperfield on guitar.
for a guitar player like me Steve Vai still gives the impression that he is a some kind of a magician. Although I realise that it's no sorcery just his craft mastery and hard work
@@jakubturlinski7159 Agreed and we can say the same for David Copperfield too :)
Great track, prefer "Tender Surrender" off this DVD.
That guitar display is so inspirational it aint funny...gift from god above..bless you Steve
I love this marked rythm of this melody with the distorted guitars, and the changes in tones.... I can hear much strength. Die to live, that's very well expressed...
Steve Vai - "Die To Live"
3:40 satch
The sounds that he comes up with feel so right in a way I cannot describe.
man he puts so much soul and harmony into his work. you can almost feel his emotions going through that guitar! Inspiring.......
thats IT. I'm pressing charges on Steve for Vai-lation of A Minor. Or was it E Minor?
This caused me to laugh out loud. Thanks for your post. s
IMO his solo sometimes sounds in jazz -like way
