  • a MAJOR PROBLEM with the Tacoma needed to be taken care of before it gets shipped away. That's right, we're saying goodbye to the tacoma, but it hasn't been sold. You will see it again, just in another place and time. There were a few botched parts of the suspension install that someone did before I got my hands on this mini truck, and the problems had to be corrected. I couldn't stand to look at the truck, so it was time to get out the welder and fix the problem. Also in this video, we go on our first test drive of the 4l80e swapped AWD copo truck, and there are a few tweaks we'll have to make there as well. But overall, we took care of both problems and got the tacoma shipped off in time.

Howdy LT, all GM calibrations are configured to unlock the converter with a throttle lift or brake circuit sense. It becomes more apparent with higher stall speed converters and a stronger TCC. Also, the weak point in a 4L80-E is the overdrive roller clutch. This component was redesigned for 2001 moving forward with smaller rollers that are now each captive in alignment foots to prevent skewing which is apparently a problem that affected some units although I've never seen it happen personally. The smaller rollers unfortunately don't hold the torque the old larger pre-2001 ones did, so due to that component, having the TCC unlocked during the 3-4 should help it hold up.

Minitrucks have always been special to me. I bought my 2000 S10 brand new and still own it today. 4" drop all around, 17x8 wheels, stereo system etc. I just love it! Hopefully in the future I can drop a 5.3 in it. Funny you mention seeing an Impala SS because I just picked up a 1995 Impala SS. It needs some TLC and paint but it is a solid car and the interior isn't trashed like most out there.

That truck is screaming for a Lexus LS V8 drivetrain. Now I want a little blue truck too!

  • @PetesGarageandperformance

All 4l80e transmissions unlock the converter on deceleration so the engine can idle. I assume it’s for better fuel economy. It’s hardly noticeable in a heavy duty truck with stock exhaust. But it’s incredibly annoying in a lighter vehicle with exhaust. Also if your running a larger throttle body it’ll get annoying because it doesn’t take as much throttle angle to maintain a certain speed. There is a min tps unlock parameter in hptuners that allows you to set when it’ll unlock based on tps. I use the bluecat transmission tool and it makes setting up shift points and lockup fairly easy.

The TCC lock up may unlock during DFCO. A throttle pedal module might let you set a minimum throttle percentage so the BCM, TCM, and/or ECM think the throttle still has a bit of "tip-in", as if your foot is holding it just barely above idle. Without it going to full idle, DFCO may not engage, which could be unlocking the TCC.

I’d encourage you to do a 4BT swap with TKX trans and 3.05 gears. Won’t be the fastest, but it would be a ton of fun to drive and would cruise wonderfully. Should be able to get high 30’s, maybe 40mpg.

4bt and trans that goes with it is 1/4 the weight of the truck. A 6speed Camaro drivetrain could knock down 25 on the highway, weigh less so it handles better, and 2x the power.

I'd build the engine in it and turbo it. I've done a V8 taco. Unless you're drag racing it only they ain't very friendly without dumping tons into the suspension. A V8 takes up all the room under the hood which makes working on it a pita.

I've got a premo 98 f-150 lariat 5.4, short wheelbase, step-side, white grey leather that I plan to build but it only has 180K and these are known for lasting 300K++ miles. So not sure I want to do it.
I've thought about buying a Toyota truck like yours and building it, so I would be very interested in seeing the little truck built. I knew the weight of the little trucks and know that 400-500 wheel horsepower would make a 2600 lb. scream.

For the Tacoma do a sbf nitrous set up. And keep the leafs and do some caltracs and an 8.8 rear

IF you keep it, id like to see something easier like ladder bars or maybe different leafs and a diy caltracs? That could be cool.

The trans temp issue is 100% airflow. Mine doesn't go anywhere near 150, even on 105' days, same trucool 40k cooler. gotta be lack of airflow.

If you're crazy enough you would swap in a 20B and if you're a mad man a 26B ;). Engines are so small and easy to work on. I do understand the wear is exponentially higher than the rest.
