- The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 on Monday, June 17, 2024. Oneil Cruz scored and had a 2-run double, and Bryan Reynolds added an RBI double to put the Pirates in front. Paul Skenes went 6 innings with 7 strikeouts to earn his 4th win of the season and David Bednar picked up his 15th save to solidify the win.

The Central Division is so tight that no team can afford to lose to a rival. These kind of series make or break a season. The Pirates have some really great pitching, which can take a team far. You can always find hitters, but if your pitching isn't up to snuff, you'll never compete.
Skenes is one of a very few players that don’t even have to worry about the umpires. His control is so damn good he knows EXACTLY where the edge of the zone is and will ALWAYS get the strike call if it’s close. His control is otherworldly! Bro can out-call a robo ump. Like, there’s no beating that dude

I wish the announcers wouldn't be so gaga the speed of Skenes' pitches. Bob Walk who barely got to 90mph had no trouble striking out batters. He should know better. One thing I did notice about Elly is he totally got lazy on our Cruz' ground ball. If he would have dove he could have at least stopped Reynolds from scoring. Something to look for in this matchup this season. We have two shortstops on different teams that have lackadaisical attitudes on the diamond.
