I followed my dads lead with his dogs, one nail at a time. I am a nurse and veteran parrot companion 30+ years. I use a 3cc syringe with the end cut off with an exacto knife and pack it with styptic powder in case she bleeds. I have a tiny nail trimmer and I do it while she’s standing on my hand. She allows me to hold one toe at a time an clip a tiny tip off each nail. If she bleeds I simply place the styptic syringe on the end applying the powder. For smaller bird I use a tiny 1cc syringe with styptic powder. Yes this is an ADVANCED parrot owners skill. I’ve learned by necessity. I used to live near a fully equipped avian vet (Gary Gallerstein San Diego) since I moved into a more rural area, I have limited access to a fully equipped vet. I do have an avian vet but she doesn’t have any diagnostic tools. That said she works with me and provides me with examinations and devising any treatment plan. This past winter my big macaw had a plugged nare and developed a serious sinus infection. We did culture and sensitivity and started Batryl & hydroxyzine twice a day in syrup and irrigation of her sinuses with .075 saline twice a day. I must immobilize her and secure her under one arm between my body like a football hold, then I use the other hand to give her the syrup a little at a time and follow with irrigation. It took 2 weeks of this before I was able to identify and carefully remove the mucous plug that had blocked her nare. Once I was able to remove the source of reinfection she had slowly gotten better. She lost 400 gms she was so sick! Good news though with all that I was able to get her weight back on and she is gradually getting back to her usual good health! So if I hadn’t been able to do all this she might have died. She doesn’t like being immobilized but I reassure her that I’m going to be gentle and I get her in and out as fast as possible. I am a firm believer that if you own one of these birds you should be prepared to do things like this unless you have endless finances and a fully equipped and avian certified vet. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Would you do video on blanket training for emergencies?

@@All-Parrots For example, my African Grey had a metal ball stuck in his beak. Had to take him to the vet. They used a towel or blanket to restrain him to remove the ball.
