  • Directed by Céline Sciamma. Starring Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel. In Theaters December 6. #PortraitMovie
France, 1760. Marianne is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Because she is a reluctant bride-to-be, Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing Héloïse by day and secretly painting her by firelight at night. As the two women orbit one another, intimacy and attraction grow as they share Héloïse’s first moments of freedom. Héloïse's portrait soon becomes a collaborative act of and testament to their love.
Winner of a coveted Cannes prize and one of the best reviewed films of the year, PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE solidifies Céline Sciamma as one of the most exciting filmmakers working in the world today. Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel turn the subtle act of looking into a dangerous, engrossing thrill, crafting the most breathtaking and elegant performances of the year. To watch Marianne and Héloïse fall in love is to see love itself invented onscreen. With contemporary themes in period dress, PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE is one of the greatest love stories ever told.

Anurag kashyap Fans Basically, Heloise is saying that she missed Marianne while she went on her walk “in solitude” (alone). Marianne had previously said that Heloise going on a walk by herself for once might give her a sense of freedom, and when Heloise did, she “felt the liberty” that Marianne spoke about, but she also ‘felt Marianne’s absence’ meaning she missed Marianne and would prefer that she would be there with her rather than being by herself.

It is strange that this movie has been experienced by other people; it feels like an artwork that only I witnessed. I’ve watched it six times, and I still cry when emotions are heightened and get a tight chest at the ending. Each time I notice a different detail. Each time I am at awe with the imagery; each scene is a portrait. I might even get a scene tattooed soon (It will be my first tattoo). This movie made me understand the complexity of the relationship between art and man; the feminine energy, the gracefulness, the power in human delicacy. I will not say: “I wish I can experience this movie for the first time again”. Indeed, every single time I watch it, it feels like the first time. I usually mock people who write long youtube comments that no one will read, but I wanted to send this into the comment section just to make a link between me and other people who experienced the masterpiece that is this movie.

THE END WAS BEAUTIFUL, YET TRAGIC. Hearing an orchestra was something that Héloïse longed to hear. It was perhaps even something worth being married for. Now she finally gets to experience it - with the implication, like the painting, that she is now a married woman, whether it's to the Italian or someone else - but that brings its own complex set of emotions. In one sense, Héloïse has something that she wanted; she's happy. But hearing the music - specifically, this music - cannot help but call to mind the memory of what she lost in order to gain it; namely, Marianne. It's fitting that the piece itself is about a perfect summer's day being interrupted by a storm, though it'd also be fair to question which is which in Héloïse's case: is the invading memory of Marianne the storm, or is that the summer's day, being crushed by the reality of life without her?

Nice to hear a straight man say this. And without the need for explicitly showing lesbian sex. The director is a lesbian woman. If you want to see this theme addressed, see it done by women. Unfortunately, the majority of lesbian themed films done by straight men is just an interpretation of what they think we're about.

I mean so what? Anyone with the right equipment and editing can produce striking photography of nature..over-reliance on these static shots for effect tends to be something lacklustre film-makers do, who cannot make a cohesive moving whole. Film isn't about pretty pictures here and there. Few people understand it's more like music than painting. Too many 'gorgeous', 'colorful' shots can actually spoil a film, same way music with crescendo every few bars is not really musical. They're more what trailers are about than what cinema is about.

Saw this for the 1st time last night and then watched it again earlier today. This might be my best movie of 2019. It is captivating in terms of the visuals, the performance of the main actors, and the storyline. And yes, it is heartbreaking. But I don’t think the ending was sad. One must keep in mind that this was set in the 18th century (if i’m not mistaken), where a romance between two women was still unacceptable. One thing that I like about this movie is that it didn’t give us any of those tropes that is usually given to us in gay movies to make a good story. None of the main characters died. There was no cheating. Instead, the movie gave us a pure and incredible story of two women who found comfort and connection with one another within a short period of time. What would’ve been sad was if either one of them has forgotten. But they have not. Each of the characters vividly feels and remember one another, and the moments they spent together. And that, to me, is enough.

Barely saw this in the last day of Cannes at the last minute, literally right after “Parasite” in the same theater.
It’s the second best one I saw out of 9 movies at Cannes. Since it was my 3rd film of the day, I was very tired, and didn’t know if I was going to make it through. It does have a slow pace, which may have seemed like it wouldn’t have complimented my tiredness. But due to many elements such as cinematography, direction, tight dialogue/story, and acting, I was surprised how much I got engaged with the film.

It’s been four years and I’m still waiting for her to tell me to turn around, this movie takes us to our own stories, the saddest but there was a life in it 💕

I just came from the cinema after watching this. Wow! What a piece of art. I absolutely loved it. The connection between them was captured in such a beautiful and refreshing way.
