- In motocross, a debate has raged for over 50 years… You see, there are two ‘Holy Grail’ championships at the pinnacle of dirt bike racing; the European MXGP World Motocross Championship and the American AMA National Pro Motocross Championship. Each series has its own set of 40 professional riders that compete in a plethora of rounds across all sorts of terrain (dirt, sand, mud etc.) The problem is, these two sets of riders seldom ever get to compete against the other. So fans have long pondered which lot’s faster… Well, in 2017 the stars miraculously aligned and we got to see Europe’s top rider, Jeffrey Herlings go head-to-head with Eli Tomac and everything else America had to throw at him! The following is what transpired…

I’m ashamed to call myself an American and have this incredible ride thrown asunder. What Herlings did was extraordinary. The way he put so many riders in shame, especially after his comeback in the 2nd race. That was a phenomenal ride, and the shame is everyone acted as if it had never happened. WTF were those fans thinking, not even acknowledging what Herlings did to come back after that crash? All the noise they made for Tomac, and they couldn’t take one fucking second to acknowledge Herling’s win. That’s fucking shameful.

It's US cultural competitiveness, it's all about winning from a young age. A bad side effect is that when losing... the denial and excuses start. Most of the world is used to it by now.

If it wasn’t for injuries he’d have a few more championships. But he is so so good
6 times World Champion over 3 classes against Stefan Everts with 10 World Champion titles over 3 classes and 5 times Motocross Of Nations winner. Not even close to be one of the best.

I was expecting more left turns on the American tracks ... 🤣 Seriously, when a nation that is very large (I'm talking landmass), anything that's not 'local' gets dumped in the trash, and it becomes a very rude awakening when someone from outside wipes the floor with the local "best" with the local equipment ... something that's often happened here in Australia too.
As an American motocross rider, I can honestly say that I have nothing but the utmost respect for the European MXGP series. Motocross is big in the USA but unfortunately it's been surpassed by supercross. While I do enjoy supercross for what it is, there's no comparison the the brilliance that is out door motocross! Much love to Europe & the USA coming together for the love of motocross! ✌️

I grew up in the era of two strokes and "traditional" outdoor Motocross, I remember when stadium cross came in, as you say , it's good but not the ideal use of these bikes as I saw here, I'm sure it was a bit of a wake up call to some, really enjoyed that video, greetings from 🏴
I sometimes watch nascar on eurosport , just because the violence on track in the nascar series is like th3 best in the world no orher sport allows drivers the battle it out like they do in nascar wich is dangerous as hell but admireble ... the only thing that comes close in europe were cars make some good contact in gt3 racing but they still have more tules then nascar ... in nascar you still get away with some shit in gt3 and f1 there is more clean driving wich actually can make it a bit boring at times

We just won the MXoN this year while Jeffrey Herlings was out due to injury - Tomac is faster than ever now and destroys the competition with his new team, engine package, and chassis/suspension set-up, however, Herlings spoke with Gypsy Tales about coming to race AMA in the future and I'm willing to bet that he'll either best everyone or just be a smidgen off! What makes him awesome too, is that he is VERY humble compared to almost 7 years ago, and wouldn't talk trash on any of the riders cause he knows they've progressed (especially for this past year while he was broken while Tomac was faster than ever), but still is so confident in his ability. I'm willing to wager that he shall win in the same fashion, and there is rumors of a Tomac VS. Herlings ONLY race that Gypsy started and they both have agreed to make it happen. :)
RESPECT for the Flying Dutchman, and for all of the riders from the sandy Netherlands! Deep sugar sand makes a man out of you, and every rider from your country is a BEAST because of it - what I love about dirt biking is it is a sport that unites all people for the love of man, mind, and machine! The engineering of such machines are utterly amazing - just look at the JCR & SLR Honda teams that take and build a factory Honda CRF450X and BEAT million dollar trophy trucks in the Baja 1000! -It's incredible what these machines do!!!!

You have to remember despite it being a big country many Americans can be very parochial. In Europe all the top American road racers like Roberts, Schwantz, Rainey etc are held in very high regard, revered even. It's something that is rarely reciprocated in all the competitive events outside of a few where the top Americans have a similar level of respect. The saying "if you ain't American, you ain't shit" is very apt at times :)

There is a lot of great riders in Europe that never/rarely really touch the circuits like the GP and only do the road runs like the TT etc which i would say is a lot harder.
I disagree. Roger DeCoster is highly regarded in the US , and he's not the only one. Karsmaker , Aberg and others are remembered fondly.
yeah thats absolutely true. there are definetely fans like american fans in europe as well but i feel like its not as many. i feel like european fans mostly just are fans of the sport and if someone comes and is good at it they will love them. Especially people like schwantz, rainey, roberts etc. Im from germany and was born in 1994 and my dad literally gave me kevin as a second name because hes such a big kevin schwantz fan. He also always gets his bikes painted in the traditional kenny roberts design (yellow with the black stripes with white borders) :D but yeah its probably not true for all american fans i dont like to put all people into one pot but theres definietely a big tendency to what youre saying. I mean just look at basketball. Germany kicked the USA out of the world cup this year and instead of acknowledging a great and hard game the germans fought and won against a great american team all you here the american fans say is excuses :D
yea rarely recipricated by americans but its not their fault, they're indoctrinated to be that way. There's no other option than to be a sore loser when you've been lied to and told you're the best in the world over and over. It reaches into all aspects of the American psyche. America is the fat spoilt kid who has never heard the word "no".
Major Respect to Herlings and for sure Sowman! Having served as AMA Sports Manager for several year, there's so much to say on how I see our American "Pro" riders take so much for granted. This young man was simply grateful for an opportunity to compete against our best here in the states. What I see our riders complain about, he praised. It spoke volumes.

Never been particularly interested in motorcross, don't even know why youtube would have recommended me this or why I ended up watching it. Your excellent writing and storytelling made every minute of this greatly enjoyable and informative. I even found myself genuinely disappointed that not only did you not cover the next race teased at the end, but there isn't a part 2 either. Will you be be completing this story? What happened at the next event? I'm sure I could find out on my own, but I'd really rather hear you tell the story.
SPOILER:
Eli competes in the US weekend obviously, the first day he beats all competition by over 28 seconds, Jeffrey seemed to have issues in the start and once again crawled his way up if I recall correctly. On the second day Eli was shocked at the pace set from the get go by all and wasn't at his fastest (possibly because he is used to only racing once a weekend). Jeffrey sets a blitz win overtaking on the last few laps due to his power of pressure!

Literally the same! Never been too interested, but the title really drew me to the video. I couldn't take my eyes away from it, I was engrossed.
As a Dutchie, I remember the results and was proud of it but never saw it as a humiliation or anything negative. It was just great to see people at the top of their game, from different competitions, competing.
That's probably since we Europeans have been trained from birth not to recognize our own humiliation. Just look how far we have degenerated, look how much absolutely disgusting crap we tolerate, drugs, promiscuous sex, all kinds of debauchery, the ethnic replacement of our peoples and the dismantling of our homelands. We need to wake the fuck up and start fighting back or we will go completely extinct within a few generations. The evil international financial empire, is eating us alive and most people are completely apathetic towards our own humiliation and annihilation.
It was quite negative for them, American fans of all sports are very insular, they consider being the best in America equal to being the best in the world. A lot of fans as he said didn't know who the guy was or think he was capable of beating the best in America, Americans believe that about all sports. Arrogance leads to humiliation, especially since this wasn't exactly the same bike or style this guy was used to.

It's amazing how some of the world's best crashed in their attempts to simply keep up with him. It's also cool to see the mental strength of Herlings, keeping himself from feeling pressured to push his luck whenever someone was breathing in his neck. Instead, he just kept his calm and kept it consistent.
Man I dont even follow this and dont know how i got recommended it, but i was hooked from the start. You captured an intensity in this mini documentary that was so satisfying. Not only was I entertained but i also learned something. Top marks man, this was epic.
Man, Herling seems like a really nice guy. All the provoking questions and he basically only gave in once, firmly standing on the "here for myself, not any rivalry" ground for the most of it. Very positive vibes.
Also, the video is phenomenal; engaging, interesting, very well edited. Great job. I understood everything from start to finish, even though I have no experience with the sport.
He's a good guy, he was on the gypsy tales podcast and said he'd love to do a 1v1 with tomac at lommel or southwick to see who's the baddest man. He said he knows this wasn't a fair matchup between them cause he had nothing to lose and tomac was in a championship fight

As an American, I love this race. I also love Herlings. Just an absolute beast! We need more of this competition from riders all over the world. If any Americans are hating on him, it's because they don't understand the sport and have 0 respect or class. Hat's of to him. What an accomplishment and how cool it was to watch him race AMA!
Competition spawns innovation. I've seen in other sports how American competitors who only practice and compete against other Americans get stumped by European competitors because they were missing out on so many things that gave the Europeans an edge. As soon as those same competitors started regularly competing and practicing internationally, suddenly they were pretty even.

EU usually win. americans THINK they are good at stuff cos all they do is compete in sports against the best from america alone, football, basketball, baseball ect. we compete against the best from nations all over the rest of the world. pick a sport that the entire world plays, and USA usually middle of the pack, at best

In Germany for an example, people which compete in the Olympics are usually full time workers. Besides of Football and some other Sports, you ain't able to live from it. The guys which compete in the marathon/sprinting stuff gettin' a thousand bucks as compensations from the State.
Because we take the whole Olympic gist about "Amateurs" more serious. In the USA, y'all pump more money in it as marketing tool against Russia and China; which are also countries which ignore the "Amateur"-Rule on a daily base.
That's the reason.
Yet, Europe has 1,2 Billion People, the USA has 300 - Statistically we are just more likely to produce top athletes. Which you see in Football, most Motorsports and every other present sport. Even in Basketball one German was relativly - yet not absolutly - dominant in the USA, despite the fact that Basketball is here like ... Most people don't even know the rules of it.

I was at that race. Obviously the anticipation of seeing Herlings race was quite the buzz. @@aspunkyyacker6850 Not at all. I was stoked to be able to say I say that second moto. Then again being at the 2018 MXoN when him and Glen Coldenhoff swept the weekend in the mud was amazing. Seeing those euro guys ride is something special. Here in the US we all try to imitate the likes of Chase Sexton or Jett Lawrence in our riding but we should really open our eyes to the styles of the Europe guys as well because there is something to be learned from their riding as well.
Jet is good because he raced in Europe while he was developing. For some reason Americans won’t go and test themselves against better riders. Iron sharpens iron.
This was great. I very much enjoyed the commentary, and the very clear and concise explanation of the sport and the play by play. You managed to make a sport interesting for a non-sport enjoyer! I keep on going back to 21:45. What a badass. I'm definitely never going to forget this.

Just in case you’re wondering, that next race in Jacksonville was worth the hype. Tomac won the 1st race with Herlings finishing in 2nd. Herlings won the 2nd race with Tomac finishing 3rd, giving Herlings the overall title for the event.

I was there, i lived in Jacksonville for sometime taking my son to the track, we’ve lived between there and spain, and I can say with certainty, the European races are much tougher compared to America for the younger racers, but it eventually evens out. I have been a motocross mom in both America and Europe and there’s definitely a difference in competition and mindset. I notice Americans have more grit and endurance, i had a fellow motocross mom American who was also a military wife stationed in Spain at the time. She has similar views for differences, at least in younger riders. Her son started racing in Japan.

This is one of the most enjoyable videos on youtube. I have never watched motorcross, except for this video, about 5 times. Its so good.
If American MX fans won't talk or remember about this great feat, you have hands down made sure it will be remembered. 1+ million witnesses of a great feat by Herlings.
We talk about it all the time and Everyone knew herlings was the fastest guy outdoors. The title is click bait. The author leaves out a lot about the differences in the sport between america and the mxgp series. The americans run two separate series, meanwhile the mxgp guys run purely outdoor motocross.
In america The money sponsors and riders are concerned about is in supercross which is raced typically in stadiums. In the last four weeks of any given motocross season, riders and team actually start testing bike setups for supercross and spend less time practicing outdoors. Its also the end of the season and Tomac had the title clinched so there was no need to go for the win and keep up with herlings. This mentality is also one of the reasons why herlings has been injured repeatedly and will underachieve in his career when he is probably the most talented guy on the planet.
americans are the best mx riders on the planet. just look at americas record on mxon. and the best compete in ama.

As someone who has been on the starting line, raced and won State level Championships Jeff is by far the fastest man on the planet. That kid is wicked fast.
Not anymore, He is nowhere near as dominant as Carmichael was or Everts for that matter. Villopoto and Cairoli as well. One of the greats but not the greatest. Championships make greatness and he crashed out of more than he won. He also stayed in the 250's far to long.

I won’t lie, any time a European sportsman or athlete visits the US and shows them up, I’m all about it.
The US generates some of the best sporting performances of all time and good on them for that. But with it comes more than a little ego and arrogance. Sometimes we gotta knock em down a peg or two and just remind them - you aren’t the only elite players in the game :)
To achieve that, especially considering he had just 1 day to adapt to and set up that bike, and new surroundings/event for him, it was legendary. The people trying to undermine, boo or ignore this feat are basically bashing the AMA.
Also, great production on the video, top notch.
To put this into perspective, the only other time I can think of when a European motorsports legend showed up and cleaned house in an American series was when Sebastien Loeb _stomped_ the 2012 X Games Rallycross championship, besting the top US rally talent like Ken Block & Travis Pastrana. However, unlike Herlings who was on an entirely new bike, the Rallycross DS3 Citroen was very much the same car that Loeb had been running in the WRC; albeit with an engine beefed up to 600 HP instead of 300 and the lights & co-drivers seat removed.

To be honest, it's not that surprising. The us has what, around 330M people (most of which who can't ever afford to compete anyway?) Vs even the EU where you have almost 500M people (and less inequality and several hundred million more people around EU itself)

Herlings actually got a royal knighthood in his home country. It is basically a recognition of his achievements and his role as an ambassador of sports for the Netherlands.
MX is not a big sport in NL but we do recognise a TOP athlete if we see him (or her).
Amazing talent. He is always extremely dedicated, focused, physically fit and well prepared.
MX is big in NL, in Austria we have the brand, you got the fast riders, especially on deep soil.

I remember watching this live, and wondering just who Jeffrey Herlings was, and how on earth a guy with a 3 digit plate was simply walking the entirety of the AMA field almost effortlessly. I won't speak for others, but ever since that day I've been hopeful that Jeffrey would take a legitimate full-season crack at the AMA Motocross series.
Let's be honest: competition breeds progress and innovation. If there's a person out there who is simply faster than everyone else, they deserve a shot at winning it all. It doesn't matter who it is, where they hail from or how they got there. I want Jeffrey to take on America. And if he wipes the floor with his competitors, then good. We're better off that way anyways. Don't elt the sport get stagnant. Bring in wildcards to spice things up and keep everyone on their toes.
As an example: 2022 MotoAmerica AMA RoadRacing series gave us an incredible fight between Jake Gagne, an AMA-bred racer and champion, and former MotoGP factory rider Danilo Petrucci, which ended up coming down to the last race.

I suspect that most people look at it that way. In the moment, I can see how some would get carried away with the whole Europe Vs NA aspect of it all. As a Brit, I would probably play in to that, but that's what Brits do.
In my experience, it is something that is often misunderstood by our American friends. Brits make fun of Aussies, as much as Aussies make fun of us. We both make fun of ourselves, too. It's all friendly banter. Americans quite often take it as serious criticism.

As a rower, everything made sense after the press conference. Coming from a team that specifically practiced in a rough water river, we were much better prepared for perfect conditions than teams that had it all the time. Worse track conditions always force technical skills that exploit better track conditions.
Reminds me of the Soccer finals in 54 Germany/Hungary. They only won thanks to the rain.
I always muddle it up in words, but when you race people who are slower you will win, but if you race people who are faster than you might not come first but you will have a new personal best. Another would be "no calm sea made a skilled sailor" which seems more appropriate to your comment.
I remember this race like it was yesterday. And I remember taking heavy flak at work amongst the moto guys for saying that we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss this Euro guy. I have always followed MXGP and I had an inkling that the days of American moto dominance was over. That race was the first of a few that, unfortunately, proved me correct. I love motocross and motocross racers, whether they be from Florida or Belgium, New Zealand or Russia, Cali or Sweden.
I think people obsess to much over their country being the best.
@@MegaBanne The difference is that other countries are very used to competing against other nations regularly, while Americans keep only competing against each other and pretending it's a competition of the best of the best, pretending other nations don't exist. And when reminded, they *still* pretend they don't exist.
@@Ebbagull That's not exactly true for every American sport. Sure, it's true for American football but baseball and basketball both have a Canadian team each. NHL has several Canadian teams and America does very well in the Olympics against all countries. Indy car is fairly diverse with plenty of Europeans, Australians and Latin Americans. Unfortunately there are no Americans in F1 but that might change soon with the increasing popularity of that sport. Motorcross just seems to have a strange nationalistic culture around it that doesn't really translate to every American sport.

Looking at this, i can't help remembering Sebastien Loeb's venue at the X Games in 2012 : Every American was like "he will struggle against Ken Block and Tanner Foust", yet he destroyed them with so much ease. Europe better raise applauses for our european top drivers/riders !!

Ken block was a nice fun guy, but we can also remember his time in FIA WRX and WRC, he was not super fast, he had good control of 4wd cars but wasn't super fast.

Sooooo enjoyed this, only fault is that it had to end😊 I work for an MX race team in South Africa and just like in Europe the tracks are tighter, narrower and the conditions are nasty. Riders are hungry and injuries are high. Probably why we have produced some good riders.

The second race really shows how easy Herlings was taking it the first, he was never going to crash like Tomac did.
I wouldn't say he was _"taking it easy"_ in the first race as much as he was *_finding his riding legs._* Remember it was a new track, new frame, new engine, new setup, so although he was confident in his capabilities as a rider, he was less so in all the nuances I previously mentioned.
By the second race however, he was on full tilt after being ridiculed by the haters and to top it off, he had a huge fumble during the first lap that if he left uncorrected, would be a perpetual mark against his name as a MX rider for the remainder of his life as people would doubt his abilities had he not pushed as though he was in the movie Crank.
Hearing dirtbikes is very nostalgic for me. One of my older brothers used to race dirtbikes and I used to go with my family to watch him.

Got the chance to watch Herlings in person yesterday at the Spanish GP. Dude is on another level. In both motos he took a few laps to get comfortable then just seemed to decide that everything was good and that was it. Thank you and good night. A truly special talent.
