'Tempo House', 'I Am Damo Suzuki', their cover of 'Victoria', 'Mr. Pharmacist', 'Gut of the Quantifier', 'The Classical', "How I Wrote Elastic Man', 'Cruiser's Creek'...there are so many great tracks...
Hadn't heard this tune for over 15 years, then one day the other week I was humming it for no apparent reason but didn't have a copy of it so youtube'd and there it is. Fab as ever. Best Northern tune of the lates 80's early 90's
Definitely one of the best and, in my opinion, most accessable fall songs. I for one believe that the songs from the brix era were probably some of the best that Mark e Smith and the gang have ever come up with.
Bolton born and bred. Lucky enough to move to the US 15 years ago through work. Happy as a pig in shit but still turn to The Fall and this song in particular when I miss home. I say "I love the Fall" and the locals reply with some glib comment about how great the leaves look when they turn orange and Thanksgiving and pumpkins and all that bollocks and I just say "Yeah......The Fall makes me feel great." Whoosh, right over their heads..... Mental, whimsical Mancunian greatness and they have no clue...... Hit the North!
Nobby Nolevel ..I'm originally frm London but have lived in the U.S for over 17yrs now..Even though i am a U.S Citizen, will always consider myself,(if asked of course)London Irish🍀..My Parents/Family are from County Kerry...I think ur Early Yrs tend to be the most formative&influential along wth the Family Relationships&Connections..So speaking for Myself,it does'nt really matter where I live on this Globe, the things I mentioned earlier really define me...But after reading ur Comment there seems 2b sumthings that u def miss??
I'm from Bolton and would be proud if Mark had been born there.. His wiki entry has him as being born in Salford...a bit closer to Manchester than to Bolton old son.
You can't really imagine a band doing a song called "Slam the South", in which the video is them playing in front of a map containing places like Bournemouth, Abingdon, Portsmouth, and Aylesbury.
You've never been to Portsmouth I take it? Funnily enough I first came across this song on a documentary made by one of Pompey's former denizens, Johnathan Meades.
i wish they'd release a dvd with all the fall tv performances and promo's on youtube but, from the master copys. That other side of midnight performance could be the greatest thing ever.
3 dates for The Fall in the uk and two of 'em "hit the north" Can't wait till they come to Beacons festival this year will be the highlight of my weekend so far!
About a mile from the old Ferrybridge cooling towers, the M1 passes through a concrete embankment. Throughout the mid eighties it had a massive piece of white graffiti saying "HIT THE NORTH". I always wondered what came first - the song or the graffiti.
Remember their song No Bulbs ? I made a video to go with it, took me a while to put together. If anyone wants to see it then simply just type in to the search bar above the following title.......The Fall No Bulbs official video ?
my cat responds in agreement and says eeeeack the whole video is quirky and really looks like some "MES in wonderland" fairy tale. oh, and i love the dance frenzy starting 2:40'
What an absolute off the wall gem of a cool as fuck track :) and that bird with the black hair at the end is smoking hot,, love the waiters with their cheery smiles and hats , great original dark sound, love it
James Anderton, Manchester's very "socially conservative" Chief Constable for many years, was the cop who "talked to God" -- the same one as in Happy Mondays' "God's Cop." He told the press something to the effect that God is using him to fulfill His purposes.
Probably my favourite fall song and video if I'm honest (though I don't believe Mr. E. Smith would agree with me...but oh well (: ) I particularly like the way the group advance on the camera at the end for some reason. They just all look so cool, yet creepy, at the same time. 'I endorse this vicinity!'
Dan, dan, dan, da-daaaan.... actually moved South to 'sway' (like The Man From Del Monte) to this in The Venue & Ritz (latter on Monday, not the grab-a-granny...)
This is probably my all time favourite Fall song. I also like 'ghost in my house' but apparently that isn't an original Fall song and is a cover of a lesser known sixties northern soul band. Of course, this is also one of the most accessable of their songs and I don't believe a particular favourite with Mark E, but I think the fall were best in the early eighties because they were ahead of the curve. They have always done their own thing but that time they had a finger on the general pulse.
The Fall and this tune are just a couple of things great about the north. Mark E Smith an anti-culture hero that's still alive. Like him or loath him ya gotta love him. The video is just the epitomy of coolness. BTW my mum's a Cockney so this aint an anti-south statement, just like to tell ya how good AND how cheap it is up here HA!
Ha. That drummer is currently sitting in my kitchen having a cup of tea.
Still?!
:-O
Whatever the word is these day for the bees’ knees on the drumming. Just discovered this tonight by accident.
One lump or two?
RIP Mark E Smith
A sublime one off…thanks for the Music
Probably the only man who stayed true to the end . His like shall never be again. Rest well where ever you rest Mark
One of the best Fall vids ever. Purely just to see Mark E. on fairground rides

"Thatchers" favourite fall song..........................................................................................
World lost a genius.Sad , sad day.Rest in peace Mr.Smith.Thanks for for the marvelous intelligence you shared..
Smokers die, that's what they do
loving the synchronised dance routine at the end.
Bolton born and bred. Lucky enough to move to the US 15 years ago through work.

I was like that when I lived down London bro.
The Fall got a lot of airplay on the college station in New Orleans; I wanted to see them when they played here in '81 but i was 14.
My favourite Fall tune! Speaking as something hailing from Herts. Big up the MCR sound!
This is just a brilliantly relentless riff with tongue in cheek video - The Fall at their commercial best
what a brilliant fantastic song&music!!
Gotta love the 80s when a skinny white dork in a bad shirt could lip sync to a camera and still be awesome.
One of my favourite songs ever! Frank Sidebottom's version is pretty good too!
Fancy the wee bloke is still in Blackpool lol
Such a good cover of the Frank Sidebottom classic!
+Steve Garrod pilnīgs sūds
I don't like how they changed Frank's lyrics, tho. You don't mess with perfection.
Hit the North! /trumpets so good in this. Mark E Smith, ~I shake your hand for The Fall.
Damn that Brix was mighty fine. The Frenz Experiment still one of my favorite albums to this day.
Who would have thought she would have ended up presenting fashion programmes with Gok Wan.....
Lisa Duffy Lol.Yeah i know. What a bloody weird world we live in.Take it easy.
You too..
Every time I pass through Bicester North train station ...
so hit it. love this song, lots of memories, thanks
It reminds me of Big Audio Dynomite. I just discovered The Fall a week ago, and can't get enough!
Bottom Line. Must discover more stuff like this!
You can't really imagine a band doing a song called "Slam the South", in which the video is them playing in front of a map containing places like Bournemouth, Abingdon, Portsmouth, and Aylesbury.
You forgot Milton Keynes
+holydrones Yeah but they'd make a song about a single street in London.
Also "Erase the East", and "Wipe Out the West".
"Murder the Midlands", "Shoot Scotland".
You've never been to Portsmouth I take it? Funnily enough I first came across this song on a documentary made by one of Pompey's former denizens, Johnathan Meades.
+Paul Rixon
you fucking high or something?
Jerry Rafferty isn't fit to lick the shite off MES's boots
Great track. Northwest is a lovely place to come from.
A man of the most refined tastes! Heino and The Fall!
Bless you.
@ellenmeilee good tune mate ,love the pheonix nights vibe in the video,..im getting the word nonce...
Beautiful music...
funny for me being a southerner
Many great bands are from Manchester and Sheffield...except Oasis which is overrated tripe.
Welcome to the heady department, as long as you come in a good mood.
A bloody classic...nice to hear it again.
Love The Fall-'Free Range' is my favourite!
They look like they had a lot of fun making this masterpiece.
i wish they'd release a dvd with all the fall tv performances and promo's on youtube but, from the master copys. That other side of midnight performance could be the greatest thing ever.
whenever I get to the M56 and see the graffitti OLDHAM NF SKINS which must have been there for at least 30 years, I try and get this on
I love watching Brix get down!
I love ❤️ The FALL NOUGH SED JUSS VUNDA FALL MUCH BETTA THAN WOTZ ABOUT NOW
This is real music! Kids of the 90's take note!
3 dates for The Fall in the uk and two of 'em "hit the north" Can't wait till they come to Beacons festival this year will be the highlight of my weekend so far!
i love this song
love this band, and im a proud northerner, Bolton , Rob BWFC .
The needle on your compass points this way for a reason...
About a mile from the old Ferrybridge cooling towers, the M1 passes through a concrete embankment. Throughout the mid eighties it had a massive piece of white graffiti saying "HIT THE NORTH". I always wondered what came first - the song or the graffiti.
Awesome! Never seen this before, thanks for posting!
MES was wise even in the dewy throes of youth.
Love the primeval screams, especially 2:22
This should be the music for the Lancs Tourism Board, if there is such a thing.
Rest in Peace mark E Smith x
I love the way Brix did his hair.
farewell mark
Remember their song No Bulbs ? I made a video to go with it, took me a while to put together. If anyone wants to see it then simply just type

terrific!
my cat responds in agreement and says eeeeack
the whole video is quirky and really looks like some "MES in wonderland" fairy tale.
oh, and i love the dance frenzy starting 2:40'
The best pop video ever
RIP Mark E smith
He is not appreciated... And that's a fookin disgrace
Ian Kavanagh 5
What an absolute off the wall gem of a cool as fuck track :) and that bird with the black hair at the end is smoking hot,, love the waiters with their cheery smiles and hats , great original dark sound, love it
Mark E Smith for a Knighthood ! That would be brilliant !
Doubt he'd accept it.

spot on Mark E
Anyone south of about junction 30 of the M6, and well,
Probably my favourite fall song and video if I'm honest (though I don't believe Mr. E. Smith would agree with me...but oh well (: ) I particularly like the way the group advance on the camera at the end for some reason. They just all look so cool, yet creepy, at the same time.
'I endorse this vicinity!'
2.22 a rare clip of mark e smith smiling....
The only thing missing for me is "You know you should! You really should!" at the end.
Brilliant
Awesome song, class video
do us mid landers count? this song goes through my head every time I hit M6 , M1

This track appeared on MTV 2's '120 Minutes' on Sunday 4th February 2007. Check out our playlists for full programme runnings :)

Everytime I hit the North this is playing in my head. Fucking love the place, the Fall and potato cakes.

Repose en Paix Mark E.smith thanks for the music

Genius genius fcuking genius
Frankside bottom made this his own :)
Eeee by heck I miss my roots. I need to hit the jackpot and be back where I belong
I remember the graffiti on a North bound M1 overbridge around Luton.....you knew you were going home when you saw that.
My cat says ackk!
this song marked a lot of people in Valencia in 80's....it sounded at the disco's "people shouted mesca"
Dan, dan, dan, da-daaaan.... actually moved South to 'sway' (like The Man From Del Monte) to this in The Venue & Ritz (latter on Monday, not the grab-a-granny...)
Kid Congo hanging out with The Fall, how cool is that?!
Their drummer in red looks WELL fed up at the end being made to dance.
class of its own
Mark E. Smith... r.i.p. 24.1.18
eric bristow said, it was reeperteet, knocking me off my feet, set me free to dancing
RIP Mark E Smith. Sad day today 24/1/2018.
What a Great Clip
It’s so nearly near. Be joy. I mean: enjoy.
Before Thatcher William the Conqueror’s Harrowing.

big shout to the Blackpool posse

HELLO, the North includes Yorkshire also. I saw MES once and he looks like he had an incurable disease.
It makes we want to dance cupcake.
Wigton Market Hall 1970 something . He did our heads in better than the local piss beer .
RIP M.E.S. GENIUS
The Fall is the greatest and the mightiest of all time. You cannot argue with truth.
RIP Mark E Smith. X
awesome
great version
