  • The U.S. Men's National Team, backed by a sold-out crowd of 16,947 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, defeated Guatemala 3-1 in the final Group A match of the Semifinal Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifying. Clint Dempsey scored his 29th and 30th career goals and assisted on Carlos Bocanegra's 14th career tally as the veteran duo gave the USA momentum heading into the Final Round of qualifying in CONCACAF as the team looks to book its ticket to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil for its seventh straight appearance at the world stage.

    For me, the highlight of the night was Johnson borrowing a US flag from one of the fans after the game, and proudly waving it as he marched it across the field. That's what it's all about. National pride. (alright, and that Corner Kick goal was pretty sweet too)

    Michael Bradley is invaluable. Like Donovan. Not as dynamite as Donovan can be sometimes with his speed and great feet/passing. But more consistent being a force every game. Donovan & Dempsey & Bradley are really our 3 stars.

    Jozy has done a lot for the promotion of the USMNT in the U.S. (scored against Spain, etc.), but Jozy has had much of his career served to him on a platter (IMO this was largely because of Bradley's fascination with certain players and because Jozy was one of the best options available in past years). On the other hand, I think EJ has been forced to deal with more difficulties in his career. He's had to fight his way back into the lineup, and, right now, he deserves the shots he's being given.

    The crowd was absolutely electric. Almost 17k, and no one was seated in that building for the entire first half. You're just not going to get that in very many places. KC is the new USMNT fortress. I expect at least one and maybe two matches there in 2013, and the Mexico match should 100% be there.

    And on the topic of Altidore's inconsistency, he's been given 31 starts in the years that Johnson was overlooked and has produced 12 goals, 5 of which came against CONCACAF opponents who, shall we say, are not the "top quality sides" to which you refer. The ratio of goals to games for the two players is nearly identical. I might agree with you that Altidore should be allowed to maintain his starting position in light of recent success, but, if he doesn't produce goals, Johnson deserves a go.

    I cannot dispute Jozy's performance with AZ, he has been playing amazing with them, that being said, something is missing from his international play... I love Jozy and I want him to succeed but we need to figure something out..would it be possible for us to formulate our midfield to play to his strengths? Doesn't seem like too drastic of a change, but then again I haven't really thought it through. He is an amazing striker and I want to see him on the national team, as long as he is consistent

  • @grandeTO9
    @grandeTO9 Před 12 lety

    I didn't contradict myself. I stated that their ratios are nearly the same in order to produce my intended result (i.e. Altidore is not, based on goal scoring ratio, better than Johnson). According to your argument, you stated that the sheer number of goals and the goals against high quality opponents was what qualified Jozy to start over EJ. My argument was that Jozy's numbers are higher because he's been given more chances, and EJ hasn't been given the same opportunity to shine or outshine.

    I'm sure it is, but I've heard all types of bad things about turf and pros prefering real grass. Do CenturyLink have that type of turf with the rubbery bits that end up getting into your shoes? I've played on that stuff and I hate it.

  • @stonewall01
    @stonewall01 Před 12 lety

    well if you notice the women's national team doesn't play anywhere near here either. All games from both Men's and Women's teams are either played in Florida, New England, or the Midwest.
    If you notice when the US National teams play Mexico they play in Chicago or Denver. To hopefully give the US an advantage. With that in mind they should play in NC against Canada in lets say June or July. lol

  • @mtmessmer

    Furthermore, regarding Jozy's performance against high quality opponents, one cannot disregard his performance against FC Twente the other day with AZ. Jozy played 51 minutes and produced nothing but a yellow followed by an immediate red after 51 minutes, in what turned out to be a 3-0 loss for his side.

  • @ejyounggun08
    @ejyounggun08 Před 12 lety

    EJ has been sublime since his reemergence but he has proven before that he doesnt have what it takes to score against top quality sides or in massive games. Altidore will be starting up top come 2014. JK would be an idiot not to, considering the form he's been in, in the Eredevisie.

    Jozy is only 22, too. The goals Jozy has scored have been against higher quality sides compared to the likes of Panama, Barbados and A&B for EJ, Jozy has scored against Mexico, Spain and Slovenia. Not to mention EJ has scored around 70 goals for his clubs, only 7 of which were not in MLS. Jozy has scored a little over 50, nearly 40 of them being outside of MLS. Dont get me wrong, I admire EJ, hes a good player and we share the same nickname but until he succeeds beyond MLS, no thanks.

  • @grandeTO9
    @grandeTO9 Před 12 lety

    I agree that Altidore has performed well in the Eredivisie, but, if you want to throw the label of "unable to perform" at Johnson, then I'd have to throw the label of "inconsistent" at Altidore. One can't accuse Johnson of not being able to perform against high quality opponents when he hasn't been given the chance to do so in recent history. Look at his game log for the USMNT over the last 5 years. He was given 5 starting opportunities in 5 years and, in that time, produced 2 goals. Not bad.

  • @grandeTO9
    @grandeTO9 Před 12 lety

    I have no idea what you're talking about after throwing Starikov, a player who has never shown any ability in playing for the USMNT, and Charlie Davies, a player who has played so little soccer in the past year that he can barely be considered a substitute anymore, into your ideal lineup. As of today, the players you referenced are either too inexperienced or out of form to deserve a shot at making the squad. Boyd could eventually work his way into the lineup, but, like Jozy, he's still green.

    I travelled from San Jose to Seattle in 2009 for a Gold Cup Match on July 4th in Seattle that the USA won 4-1 and only 15,000 fans showed up and that was including the thousands of Hondurans who came to support their team for the game prior in the double header. FYI- The turf is a main issue preventing the MNT from playing in Seattle... The USMNT doesn't want to play on it, nor do our potential opponents for friendly games. Try to put in temporary grass like RSL did in 2005 for the MNT's sake?
