- I often get questions in my comment section about how I like to fish the Mule Fishing lineup. Today's video is intended to summarize a few of my favorite fishing retrieves for Mule Jigs & Plastics.

Overall, this is kind of a tricky subject to cover because I truly don't feel there is any wrong way to fish a Mule Jig. That being said, I believe if you can master these five, it will give you more confidence on the water. If I am being completely honest, I don't even think about my retrieve anymore... After you learn how to fish this gear and you do it enough times with success, you can start to simply trust your feel on the water.

I got really good at fishing with mule jigs at my local lake, caught hundreds of bluegill, crappie and bass, a 10 pound catfish and even a 5lb saugeye, can literally catch anything on them

@@FishAnything they are my favorite baits, and I’m selling my friends on them too because I catch all the fish whenever we got out, they fish big bass lures and I still catch the bigger fish with my horse fly
Thanks for the video. A product idea: A mule fishing starter kit or two on the website with popular sizes and colors. I ask for fishing stuff for Christmas, but my family doesn't love it when I send links to a bunch of different products. They end up just buying from my amazon list, but if there was a single product I could point them to that might make it easier to get them to buy from Mule fishing.

I’m a bass fisherman primarily, but occasionally fish for stock trout in creeks and wanted a smaller profile setup to do that. Did some googling and next thing I know, I’ve watched a TON of your videos and just bought an ultralight setup! I’m buying some mule baits too! I find myself using the float more and more each time I go out. It never gets old watching that float go under! For swimming the bait I'd rather put the plastic on the Bronco Blade, especially in the spring, it just flat out catches everything!!

Man I just love the burro bug Texas rigged on a small size 6 EWG hook, absolutely slayed smallies wading this year using that technique.

I use a 7'2 medium light rod with a 2000 series reel with 6 pound test line and it works amazingly well. I also use a 5'6 rod with 4lb test line for brook trout. Usually the horse fly works great! Caught a lot with your gear! Thanks for bringing something different to the market!

Love the videos, love the lures, wouldn't be me if I didn't poke at getting a bubblegum pink DT Jr lol. The new blue jigs look awesome by the way. One of my favorites is targeting panfish, the mule jig is my go to jig!

Using smaller tanta style soft plastics(can't get mule in Portugal) I find that I get the most success on the colder harder days fishing against the current with twitching and drifting, completely against the current, that makes fishing from the bank mostly useless on the winter.

Great content and video here Ethan. I like most of these retrieves but I catch a bunch under the slip floats. After a few rounds of 3 to 1 my buddies give in and ask what I'm doing differently. I tell them you're working to hard with that. Let the breeze and a little current work for you. When the float stops I'll tap the handle with my index finger or quiver the tip of the rod gently. I need some hi-viz line for a little more pendulum action. Missing too many that way. Blessings brother
The slip float is a classic. Definitely hard to beat, but I can't help but prefer to free-line a jig.
That Shimano Exage is a great reel at lower sizes. You really need to search to find reels at 1500-2500 that work nicely and feel smooth. Exceler is another good shout at this mini size.

🎣 thank you for giving us some great advice, information and techniques as well. don't know exactly when but before trout fishing season of 2024 gets here, i definitely have to order a few of these jigs. I'm tired of my little rubber worms or paddle tails plastics and rubbers keep breaking and tearing apart. Those things cost a lot of money to keep buying every two weeks. It's nonsense. The fish attack it like they never eat before, lol.

Down here in Tx I just caught a 19 1/2 inch bass on a 1/32oz mule jig and Donkey Jr.
Absolutely love it!
Love the jig heads, however have trouble rigging DK Jr. Full size no problem but Jr seems to never go on straight or gets wonky I gather because it's so soft and tiny.
Love your gear. I know I'm going to catch fish. Maybe a creek 6" chub or a 3# bass. Fish eat mules.

I've been rigging the 3.2 minnow sideways. Kinda like a leach type action. It works, just like all Mule lures. I'm thinking of a way to make the karma black. 🤔😉

Great content Ethane,my question is I live in Colorado and I do a lot of trout fishing do you have any suggestions on what to use?
Trout fishing can vary from spot to spot, but my top choices would be to either run a Horse Fly under a float similar to fly fishing under a strike indicator. Or I also like to twitch a Mule Minnow 3.2 through deeper pools and look for more aggressive trout.
In Japan, horse mackerel is caught in the sea using a 1lb to 2lb ester line and a 02g to 2g jig head.
I've been trying to figure out how you created the tension to shoot the jigs under the dock. Can you do a more focused short or something that zooms in or slow mo to show how to do this with a spinning reel and/or baitcaster? This vid was very insightful.

To explain further... Keep your bail closed and allow your bait to hang about 12 - 18 inches above the reel. Place a finger over the line and open the bail. With the non-reel hand, grab behind the hook and create a bend in your rod blank. Point and shoot. Hopefully that helps a bit?
Do you have any suppliers in Canada really like your product but can't seem to find any up here. Love the videos have been watching for a few years have always enjoyed ultralight fishing.

So here is a question. I have a lake that has mostly wood cover like branches, log, limbs and trees. What is the best way to stop getting my jigs stuck in this type of cover? My product idea is a version of the Mule Jig that allows the bait to be fished like a Texas rig. I keep losing jigs on branches and brush piles. I catch a lot of fish, but lose a lot of jigs in the process. I think ZMan created a version of the Shroom Jig that allows for a TX rig setup. Any thoughts Ethan? Mule Fishing is my favorite tackle company hands down!

Brush and trees can definitely be a challenge for the ultralight angler. While I also enjoy a "Texas Rig" style jig offering, it is not exactly suited for the ultralight style of fishing as it requires more hookset power (stronger rod and line) to drive proper hook penetration. I definitely will look into some weedless options for innovation, but for the time being, I would say that opting for the lightest possible jig you can get away with is usually the best way to avoid major snags. I like to fish directly in cover with lighter jigs, which helps the jig keep from falling deep into the cover and allows me to "feel it through" a bit better.
No fishing is Michigan right now. Not with that storm moving in lol.
lol life is busy plus weather is cold. Taking a bit of time off from fishing but I’ll be hitting it hard in 2024

Do you still recommend the TFT Pan rod for all purpose rod? Or do you have a new favorite all purpose? Thanks!
The TFO is still one of the best options out there. I prefer my Phenix Elixir but it is a pricier rod so I only recommend that if it is in budget. Both are great!

I can't say I have ever fished your waters, but I personally think the drift and twitch is applicable for pretty much any situation.

Can Ultralight rod hold on high current river?
I guess it is hard for me to say without seeing what you are talking about, but if you are fishing a river with a lot of current, it may not hurt to increase the size of gear you are using to ensure you are able to fight fish back without too many issues.

Yes they can work well for trout!
What's good for trout fishing jigs
Horse Fly is my favorite! But the Mule Minnow 3.2 can be a great twitch lure too.
When do the bundles restock?
Trout bundle is back! The other two are pending soft plastics restocks, likely mid July as long as everything goes as planned.

How’s the water up there in Michigan?
Caught a really good large mouth at half time on Thanksgiving. 3.2 mule minnow, 1/32 jighead.
Cold! I was on Lake Saint Clair on 11/27 and the water temp was 34 degrees.

It’s definitely getting cold! Michael that’s awesome you caught a nice one. My 2 year old son and I caught a nice chunky bass on Thanksgiving on the mule minnow 2.2 🤠👊🏽
