I've had this recording of Schedrin Bizet's Carmen for many years and have listened to it countless times. Amaxing how just strings and percussion and no brass or woodwinds reduced Bizet to absolutely pure Carmen. It leaves some parts for your mind to fill in and just plays enough to fill the blanks. I love it more than a fully orchestrated Carmen.
I tried to explain to my boss that this was Bizet transcribed by Rodion Schedrin for ballet. He corrected me by saying Carmen is an opera. I said yes, but this was re written as a ballet. 🙄 Without sounding like I was correcting him.
This performance is such a joy to watch. Fantastic camera work and editing... The percussionists got their well-deserved camera time. Cristian Măcelaru was so wonderfully animated, again, a joy to watch.

Wow it is easy to first pick up the "casual' look the Conductor, he made it clear that this is slow ride of bicycle down a slippery slope with no brake. I haven't listened to enough classical music to say anything definitive, but this is by far this most satisfying version of Bizet's Carmen Suite available to me. Intense in the technique, strong in expression but also very easy to get all worked up and fall behind him for not following his lead. Bravo to the commitments of the orchestra team. So wonderful to see the expression of the whole team.
Lebhafte und wunderschöne Aufführung dieser ethnisch komponierten und fein arrangierten Suite mit farbenreichen und perfekt vereinigten Tönen aller Instrumente. Die Virtuosität aller Einzelspieler ist echt ergreifend. Der geniale Dirigent leitet das kompakte und ausgezeichnete Orchester im rhythmischen Tempo und mit völlig efffektiver Dynamik. Einfach wunderbar!

Meilleure interprétation contemporaine, presque identique à celle de Vladimir Spivakov. Très, très bon, bravo!

Super! Vor allem die Schlagwerker machen eien tollen Job. Als jemand, der das auch mal gespielt hat, hat es sehr Spaß gemacht zuzuschauen und dabei zu denken: Ah, da hab ich das gespielt, das war witzig.
I've never heard percussion instruments put to better and more consistent use than in this consummate work. (And of course Shchedrin snuck in the Farandole from L' Arlesienne.)
