Melee will always hold a special place in my heart for teaching me these types of principles. Had it not been for this game, I wouldn't have learned about works like Playing to Win and The Art of War as a teenager. Now in my 30s, I've often been told, "I could never do what you do," and I always think to myself, "That's the only reason that you can't." Mentality is the predominant factor that determines what we're capable of.

I have days where like 70-80% of people I play quit/give up in the first 30 seconds, and it just blows my mind. I know not everyone is looking to improve and care about their mentality, but I'm just trying to get some real games in! I also appreciate the bit about when to actually leave. Personally, I almost never leave a session unless I have to go (tired/tournament/hands/etc) or if they are BMing (unless they are actually beating me, then I might deal with it just for the practice lol) because there's always something to learn. Great video!

The reason there are so many parallels between Armada and Zain is that both of them recover from losses probably better than anyone else. Their ability to take the pain of losing and consistently turn them into learning opportunities to go in their favor next time is just a small facet of how mentally rock solid they are. Seeing zain lose big house 9 was like watching armada lose genesis 1. And yet, like armada winning genesis 2, zains hard work paid off and after winning genesis 7 he's been reaffirmed that his hard work and mentality can get him the gold. Cheers to melee(:

Never seek to win, just make defeat an impossibility and winning comes naturally. To know yourself and also know your opponent guarantees victory as a matter of course. This is much easier said than done, though, especially the part about knowing yourself. Also you gotta stay on top of the metagame to constantly be adapting to cover your weaknesses while also emphasizing your strengths.
You can do this, guys. Whatever it happens to be.

Really good video, very helpful for competing!
I wanna add to this by saying not every persons main goal is to become a fierce competitor and some people just play the game because well, its fun!
Some people play the game just to be cool and that is great. So keep in mind not everyone you are playing will have the same goal as you. And hey that's okay.
Just please don't be a person who rages at people for either just playing for fun or when people tryhard against you, everyone can, and hopefully will, play the game how they want to.

Really helpful video. The humility portion really stuck out to me because, at least on unranked (not so much when I play in bracket), I am a really poor loser. I tend to get upset easily if I'm getting comboed, especially when getting chain grabbed or tech chased by a Marth or Sheik or someone. I'm not sure if it's more me getting upset at myself for falling into grabs like that or me getting upset that my opponent is better or something else. Really good thing to point out and I'm hoping this helps me to better identify why my mentality is so bad on unranked but in bracket it's usually okay. I have had times where I've just given up matches because I thought the other person was just flat out better, but looking back at them I definitely could have won those if I really gave it my all instead of just jumping to the conclusion that I don't deserve the win.

It was one time where I completely forgot about the stock count and was only thinking about taken each stock. i think the example on urgency is actually really bad and will instead reinforce negative thoughts if players fail those objectives due to any reason. you can't control your tournament performance beyond bringing your A game, so setting a result-oriented goal like that will just breed toxicity.
the urgency goals should be a lot more self-driven and not something that relies on external factors. i also don't think set deadlines are healthy if you can replace it with diligence instead. the goal should be to become better than you were before, not reach an arbitrary number at an arbitrary date.

@@chrismdb5686 I play Fox and practice in Unclepunch for about 5-6 hours a week, labbing things like waveshine confirms, waveshine forwards and backwards, the spacie changrab, ledgedashing, Armada shines, etc. I also play a lot of melee. A friend of mine switched to Sheik about a week ago and although he’s only been playing for about 2 months longer than me, he was consistently 3 stocking me with Sheik without even practicing his character. Before he made the switch, I did ok against his other characters (Falcon, Falco) but he still beat me without even having to lab. He’s also performing much better in tournament than I am. He entered a newbie tournament and got top 4 and took 1 or 2 games (not sets) in actual brackets. I got washed in actual brackets and haven’t entered a newbie tournament in a while. It’s extremely frustrating seeing those around me succeed so much more when I have to put in 3 times the work and take the game 5 times as seriously just to barely keep up.

@@thorikthorik9879 For one, you're arguably playing the most difficult of the tip tiers (tech wise), so you're going to have to out in more work by default just based on the character you main. Don't take it as a sign that you're worse than those around you, because there's a wide variety of reasons as to why those near your skill level may be doing wildly better or worse.
Keep in mind that while tech is certainly important - especially with spacies - it's more important to be properly applying the tech than to have perfect execution. If you can, try to download your replays and study them to see what gaps exist in your playstyle. It's touched on a bit in the video but you may be able to identify patterns that trip you up, or common weaknesses your opponents can exploit. You seem familiar with a wide variety of tech already so if you can theorycraft solutions to these problems with that tech and then apply it in match I imagine that will begin to help you tremendously.
As for your friend who plays Shiek, don't let that situation get you too down. As I said there's a wide variety of reasons he could be doing better now that he's playing Shiek instead of his past characters, despite not having put in the time. Fundamentals always transfer among characters within a fighting game so despite not having explicitly practiced Shiek he's still carrying experience into every match and - perhaps even more importantly in this instance - he already knows how to fight your Fox whereas his Shiek is something you have far less experience with. Give it time, and maybe put some time into learning that matchup specifically.
I had a similar situation in my local scene with Ultimate before the quarantines started, a friend of mine mained Palutena while I main Ridley and he hardly ever seemed to out work in compared to what I had to do. Every tournament he'd cruise down the winner's side of the bracket to grands while I had to fight tooth and nail for a shot at Loser's Finals, but over time I was able to learn to cover holes in my game while adjusting to my opponents and it all eventually came together. With enough perseverance, determination, and hard work (also provided you have the free time) you can overcome this. The only limit to what you, or anyone, can accomplish is what you want to achieve for yourself.

@@thorikthorik9879 Also, keep in mind that winning isn't everything. If you obsess over winning constantly or 'just beating that one guy' it'll consume you and you won't enjoy yourself anymore. Set small goals for yourself to work towards so you can see tangible progress, this will not only help you stay motivated (because you'll have a more tangible sense of progress), but these small goals will be much easier to accomplish than the daunting end goal you've made for yourself.
You need to do the side-quests so you're a high enough level to beat the final boss if you know what I mean.
If the game isn't currently fun you need to experiment to try and find what you loved about it again. Maybe that takes the shape of playing more friendlies and practicing tech less often, perhaps it's trying to play other game modes, or other games entirely to keep from getting burnt out, or perhaps you even end up stepping back and coming at the game with a whole new mentality. This is different for everyone, but given enough time I'm sure you'll find that spark and rekindle it.

Hard to get good at something when you have major depression and hate yourself and even hate the activity unless you're performing at top 0.1% level despite having piss poor equipment since you can't justify getting good equipment without first getting the results you would only except if you used top of the notch gear.
Bad internet also making the game almost unplayable half the time and not being able to play with competitive rulesets because you'd have to wait several hours for a low tier match with no proper coordination. Just a glorified DM fest.
Aaaaaaaaa I'm never getting good. I can't learn anything anyway. It's really only about getting aimbot level aim but I can't do that. I can't force myself into playing 5 hours of death match, then like 2 hours of MGE and then like additional 2 hours of bot tracking and then spend like 2 hours scrimming or analysing demos twice a week and then also spending another like 3 actually playing the game
