Hey Stef I'm Spanish and I completely agree with your way of learning, I wouldn'd recommend to travel to any English speaking country unless your level is B2 or higher, people think that B1 or even A2 is enough to understand real english and it's not, then if they don't understand locals they clam up ( I learnt this expression from you!) and therefore there is no immersion at all ( like your 6 months course in Argentina) that's useless IMO, I only recommend to travel or take a course if your level is already decent otherwise it's just pointless ( in learning terms curve)
I think you need to travel after B2 level is reached, so you can pick the slang , local accents and so on, its just for mastering the language.
      Travelling = mastering the language
Personal effort = learning the basics
THere's no other faster way to learn IMO
For chinese beginners, ,do not travel to CHINA, why would you do that? it's a crazy idea , Firstly get the ropes first in your country... and ONLY then travel, the same goes for all the other languages out there

I totally agree with you. I was studying English for 5 years and now I'd say that I'm finally fluent. I work in an American company, most of my friends are either from the USA or from England, I watch TV shows, news, movies in English. I am completely immersed in an English-speaking environment at least for 10 hours a day! And the funny thing is that I've never been to an English-speaking country. Moreover, I've never visited traditional English classes. My journey started when I was 16 years old and I decided to be fluent in English whatever it takes, but I didn't have money for visiting any kinds of classes. We had an old computer in our village with an access to the internet, I opened youtube and started looking for any kinds of materials that would help me and then I found my first list of English lessons that were made in my native language ( Georgian ). When I learned basics, I found another channel, but that channel was already in English ( Vanessa's channel ). Maybe you even heard about it. There was Gabby's channel as well, and after that, I found you and your amazing channel. You are one of my favorite teachers! Thank you for all your useful and at the same time, relaxing videos, 'cause when I watch your videos, I don't feel like I'm at school or something like that. I feel like I'm listening to my friend. Thanks to you and my other youtube teachers I literally changed my life, English opened those doors I could have never thought about. Thank you for everything!

I´ve been to Canada for one month after studying English until the end of B2 level. So I did a placement test there and I started a regular course at C1 level. That´s OK. I´ve found that the course in Canada is not different from the courses I took in Brazil (my home country). NOT a single difference. Same books, same structures, same style of teaching. The only difference was the opportunity to practice. And, to do that we don´t have to pay for classes. Just find ways to practice. Nowadays we aaaaaaa lot of materials on the internet. Lots of resources, courses and everything. If you have some discipline, you can learn a lot and just go abroad to practice. Just get the minimum number of class and spend the rest of your time on the streets. Go everywhere to interact with the locals. What I can tell you all is: after one month, my overall fluency has got better, however, I would have spent less money if I had the access to this video before. I would have bought the minimum number of class. Instead, I´ve bought the largest amount of classes. After some time, I started to get bored to stay inside the school for so long. My strongest advice is: study as much as you can before you go, and go abroad to practice; only that. Apart from the language, the trip was wonderful because I learned a lot about the culture and the Canadian way of thinking. I don´t know if my writing above was completely grammatically correct but as I saw in the video, I´m trying to communicate instead of stopping all the time to think about mistakes. I look forward to hearing from you all about your opinions.

    • @arianegragnani9628
      @arianegragnani9628 Před 5 lety +6

Hey, I'm also Brazilian, but I hold a slightly different opinion. Maybe for general english courses it's a waste of time and money because in these type of courses you are basically learning grammar and how to communicate. However, if you have a higher goal, this level wouldn't be enough, you would probably need to take some proficiency test or learn how to write an academic essay, and these skills are poorly taught in Brazil. From experience, I can say that what I learned in my academic english course abroad I would've never learned in an english course here. So if you want to take a higher education course, I would advise you to look for academic english courses which can prepare you for a university or postgraduate course. Hope it helps! Good luck on your journey!

I think that the answer is not to study abroad but to actually use english in your daily bases, for example: going to the doctor or just buying a slice of pizza! All of that can make the difference, at least for people whose english is advanced, that's why I'd like to live in an english speaking country.
And so here are my tips to practice your english at home if you wanna get fluency and writing skills (they helped me a lot to improve my english):
-Watch CZcams videos from things you like and leave comments, with that you force yourself to write in english and interact with other user's comments as well!
-Use social media like twitter and use it to tweet in english or to debate with fellow users about random topics, also, if you like to procrastinate do it in english hahaha I mean we use social networks to do nothing, so at least take advantage of that and make it a source to get involved in the language.
-Use Omegle, it's a platform where u can talk with strangers through webcam, it's free! So you don't have to pay for talking english in private websites, just be careful and learn how to use it and you're good to go. There are really good people to whom you can get along with.
    Sooo yeah :)
I just have lack of confidence when I'm surrounded with people who speak my own language, it's awkward, for some reason my level tend to be lower, apart from that I feel great whether I make mistakes or not, at the end, what it matters is the message isn't it?
    We missed u Stephanie :)

Hey there! A couple of years ago I went to Malta to do a 3-week English course. Spent almost $2 000 and, you know, nothing wonderful happened. I mean, I came there with B2 and left Malta with B2. Most of students had thick accents, most of teachers weren't interested in our progress. So, it was definately not worth it. It was ACE-school, BTW. My advice would be - to hire an individual tutor, if you can afford it. If not - listen to podcasts, it's literally THE BEST thing I've done for my English.

Great points in this video! Even living in an English speaking place permanently doesn't guarantee a lot of interaction with native speakers, let alone a 1-month study abroad program- a lot of my clients work in English, and then their entire social/family life is in their native language. To get more natural English exposure, I've had some really creative clients over the years- like high level managers who drive Uber on weekends just to increase their "real life" English exposure! Creating those opportunities, like you mention, is key!!

    • @emrebilgi

@@emrebilgi It entirely depends on what the person's goal is- most clients that I work with want to sound like a native speaker, and in that case, 8 hours per day just isn't necessarily the "right" kind of exposure, since they are listening for meaning, not sounds/intonation etc. Sorry my brain is totally biased towards accent/pronunciation though! I'm very independent in the way that I learn and I don't rely 24/7 on teachers to correct my mistakes, just like you. Even though being in an English speaking country I never did traditional classes, actually, I did 3 days and it was way too boring...ever since I've been trying to immerse myself in English by mingling with locals, creating situations where I can improve my speaking skills. I can ensure you that we don't have to go abroad to become fluent because I've seen people going abroad and end up mingling with people from their own country, going through the same traditional boring learning system. If I were in my native country, I would rather stay at home and create my own learning system along with Stefanie than go abroad to attend traditional classes.

There are so many ways to improve your English on the internet, like watching videos or language exchanging apps and if you feel like you have to study abroad so you can achieve that fluency you always wanted, trust me, that is not the only way to achieve fluency, literally you just have to talk to people and listen to yourself, record yourself and focus on your mistakes and try and fix them also there are so many people on the internet that wanna learn your main language so just go find them, having someone who you can talk to and learn from has been huge for my English learning process.

So accurate. When I studied abroad in the USA, I struggled with the same things. Even though I could understand native speakers perfectly I was too shy and too nervous to talk so most of the time I was silent and alone which, of course, didn´t help me to improve as much as I wanted. Also, the cultural differences between my native country and the USA made it even more difficult for me to feel comfortable and secure so I developed depression lol. In the end, I did improve a lot (because of the classes and the few people I talked to) but I think my experience could have been a lot better if I had the courage and the confidence to immerse myself in the culture and interact with local people. So, my advice for someone who is planning to study English abroad is: get to know yourself! If you are a nervous person or if you have never been alone, try to find a place that makes you feel comfortable. Find your second home. That will help you to develop confidence. It may sound childish or extreme. But trust me, when you are alone in a foreign country, it's crucial to have some people you can rely on.

I agree with you. My experience learning English abroad started when I was a teenager spending one month during summer in some village in the south of England, every morning in class, every afternoon playing in the park with Italian friends and every nigth with the british family that was hosting my brother and me. That happened for three summers in a row and did not learn much. Later, after graduating from hi school in Italy I moved to Wellesley, Massachussets to study to pass the TOEFL and SAT tests. After that I was accepted from a college in San Francisco and in four years I graduated in Business Administration.
Still I'm not feeling fluent as I am in Italian, I understand 100% of your video (easy, as you have a perfecly clear pronunciation) but I still miss the experience that you acquire in kindergarden and elementary school as a native. I do not have any problems speaking and understanding native speakers but I'm still far from considering myself fluent in English.

Hi Stefane, I’m Brazilian , I’ve been in California for 3 months . I started my English classes 2 months ago and that same time I started watching your videos . I have classes every mornings but I’m living here with my family, my husband and my two daughters, they are 5 and 2 years old. It’s hard because I spend a lot of time with them and I can’t practice my speaking with natives how I would like .
But I realized I improved my listening with your videos ( I think I have heard all of them ! ) I repeat a lot of times , sometimes I practice shadowing in you videos and I think I am improving my speaking as well.
About the classes, is a good opportunity for me because I can to have contact with English and to socialize all the time while my daughters are in the school. But in the first month I could speak almost nothing because I didn’t feel confident to speaking even knowing some gramar’s rule .
Another problem is that here a lot of people speak Spanish and how I speak Spanish much better than English was easier for me speak in Spanish. But I stoped to do this because My English never would get better that way .
I think you are right . Just to study English abroad doesn’t mean that you will get fluent. I think is very important to be in contact with the language as long as possible.
To watch your videos have helped me improve my listening and speaking skills.
    Thank you so much !

I feel that my level of English is nowhere near a native speaker. But, like you say, the important thing is that I can communicate and transmit ideas clearly. I still remember that felling of "I am the best student, my English is great" and then I felt overwhelmed ordering a sandwich, with all the options for bread, meat, and toppings. I'm pretty sure that you (Stephanie) is totally right about what you said that we don't need to study abroad to learn a language. I've never been to any English speaking country, but I learned English on my own and I think I can do really well. It's all about how much we work hard and how much we're willing to study. My only concern is that I would not be able to understand English from a native English country like I do here. If I'd study abroad, I would not have any teacher, I would talk to people around me and that'd be way better than spending a lot of money on schools.

I am absolute with you Stefanie, Many friends of mine studied in the US or the UK, their English didn't improve at all as they were surrounded by people in their own countries. I gotta say studying abroad is totally not the answer to reach fluency. When I was choosing from the variety of exchange programs, Sweden was the one that stood out in my mind. My motive is to experience something new and talk to ppl in English, but I gotta confess that the only thing that I know about Sweden is that it is in Europe. After I got into the program, I simply brought a flight ticket and went off, due to my reckless behavior, I got into many troubles, haha, but it made the whole experience more adventurous and unforgettable. I had a super huge culture shock when I was there. In the beginning, it was so hard to get into the community or talk to someone in English, I felt so surreal living there because everything is so new for me. In fact, I found language is not the biggest problem while studying abroad, but the cultural differences are. My English was terrible and was made fun by many people, but I didn't care ( actually I did, but I just moved on) and kept talking to others who are more openminded. Until I met two friends who ain't from English speaking countries, but their English is phenomenons. They are patient and really taught me a lot about everything. I still remember their shocking faces when I told them that I had zero ideas about lasagne. Anyway, I have never regretted doing the exchange program tho that is only a half a year. Here is the thing, you should better watch some youtube videos and TV shows, read some news about the country where you are going, that will help you a lot to have certain ideas of the country you are going to, also, the more you know, the more you will get into the community, the more you will be enjoyable. Besides, you should be more open-minded, remember your motive of studying abroad, try to get out of your comfort zone ( I know it is really hard, but take the baby step), believe in yourself, and enjoy.

Hi! Nice video! I am retired from Brazilian Navy since 2013. I´ve been studying english for a long time and fluency was always my aim. Even serving onboard friend ships, where english was the official language, I always had problem in listening, specially nautical terms like: watertight, starboard, portside, alongside... etc I think that in order to get the fluency in any language, we have really imerse in that idiom. I have a niece attending an english course in Ireland, so she told me she is getting improvements. She is studying and working at the same time, that´s maybe the reason she is loving the program. In Brazil we only speak portuguese and many people think that we also speak spanish (we are surrounded by spanish speaking countries) which is a different language. All the best!

I really like that you mention volunteering as an alternative way of learning languages. Means a lot to me and I appreciate that you mentioned it a lot.
For those who don't know, volunteering, please consider taking a deeper look at what it is, it's worth it. I've got my most precious memories so far in volunteering projects 💞.

Hello. I studied in Japan for 3 years. I totally agree with you. Learning a new language really needs to communicate with the native speakers. I had 4 different part-time jobs after my school. My colleagues were all the Japanese. I learned the way how they talked, how they think, how they worked, which really helped me to understand the language and the culture as well.

I've studied english for 5 years, and in the lasts years i'm feeling so frustated, because i don't have the sensation of evolution. I always want to study abrod, now I could understand that when i travel, i will need to search the best program to me and i will live the experience. Thanks for this video! I will open my mind to improve my english in my country and probably I'll travel in 2 or 3 years.

My name is Eduardo and I am Brazilian. In 2013, I went to US for a year to study mechanical engineering in Florida. I think that going abroad to do courses which were not part of a language program was actually the best thing I could possibly do. I had to interact with other people during technical discussions and work in groups to solve engineering problems. Doing all that made me put my barriers aside. I put myself in a situation where I had to present seminars in English. I remember practicing over and over again and I remember how good I felt when I finally got it right. By the time I was back home I had the confidence to speak freely without being afraid of making mistakes. And now I am one more guy following your channel and trying to continuously improve my English! Thanks for the content you make! You're awesome and I love to listen to you speaking. You do it so clearly!

Thanks so for this video. I'm Brazilian and I made a course of English. I did it good but I didn't have any real contact with the language. Having no means to travel or no native speakers to talk with I'm using the means I can to improve my studies. CZcams is being an awesome tool for me to do it. I watch you here with my eyes closed and I feel emotioned because I can understand something like 80 per cent of what you say. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

I totally agree with you. I've been waiting for such a video for so long. I studied abroad for one semester. It was a loooot of fun. But, to tell you the truth, I made the biggest contribution in terms of English when I came back home and started learning the language on my own, watching a lot of videos, reading books, listening to podcasts and speaking in English with people online. Thank you for the video. Keep up the great work.

Hello, I studied english in Malta for 2 weeks and it was very help me. The lessons in class are very different from my country because we have the opportunity to talk to each other almost during the entire lesson, so it was really helpful to talk and the people on my class had all the same level. For my part it was a really good experience, however I met a lot of people who had the same nationality than me, so you are not in a total immersion. I think the best way to be really in an immersion is to get a job, an internship abroad.

The only time I ever travlled abroad was 4 years ago, when I spent a month in Vancouver as an exchange student. My whole life turned upside down. I went from a 26-years -old woman who had just switched careers (and starting college all over again) to an employee as an English teacher as soon as I came back to Brazil. Not everybody enjoyed their time there, on the other hand I made the most out this lifetime experience.
I love your channel. I'm learning a lot. You have great tips.
    Regards from Brazil.

I 'm trying to be fluent in English just by reading English newspapers, news , and other books to have some new words. I'm just preparing by myself cause here in India you need to be fluent in three languages first is in your mother language, second is your national language, and third is most importantly English.
If you're really wanna learn something in your life then you just get a need of teacher or a good person who knows everything well ,you really don't even need to go abroad if everything is around you.
You're really doing a great work here Stephanie.

I never went to another country but I hope to visit USA next year and I learned english online without the help of a professor, I just learned what I learned talking to people in online games, watching movies with and without subtitles in english, reading books and doing things like that.
Hey, I really understand everything you say and I feel confident enough to explain what you said in english... So does it mean that my english level is advanced or somewhere beyond that?
    Keep up the good work!

You have no idea how grateful I feel for having found your channel. I am Mexican, and I am currently doing a masters in law in Scotland. It’s been almost a year, and I still do not feel that my fluency has increased as expected. In fact, a few days ago I started to feel a failure. But now, after watching this video, I feel better. You have explained perfectly what really happens when you study abroad. Thank you for that, because you have removed a strong load from me. One comes to the English speaking countries with high expectations, but reality is that there are a lot of factors that affect your improvement. In my case, I have been very busy doing tons of essays, and that implies being quiet all the time in the library -How one is supposed to be more fluent in silence?! Anyway, I will continue watching your videos since you have helped me more in the last weeks than my ‘Scottish life’ in a whole year. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    I had a great experience.
I started to learn german in my country and had A1 level. Then I decided to go to Vienna for 2 weeks. And I jumped over 1 level (A2) and returned on level B1! I couldn't believe because it was such a great progress and my teachers were surprised.
But it works only when you are not advanced.
Now with B2 after 2 weeks again in Vienna I really didn't feel any progress.
That's why my advice is to go abroad to learn language only if your knowledge is not very deep. Then the result will be fantastic 👍

This video is absolutely true. I've learned english since i was is elementary school, i live in Indonesia where less people speak english.
I was frustrated to find a way to improve my english, then finally i found out a community where people can practice their english together with the native speaker.
I spent a year practicing my english, i was too shy to say something i never did before to the native speaker.
It was super helpful to be surrounded by supportive people and true..you don't have to go abroad to be fluent.
And yes, i don't have enough money to go abroad and wasn't confident enough to apply for the scholarship.
Thank you so much for making and sharing this video, looking forward to seeing the next video of you!!

I have this thought “I need go abroad to learn English”, it always came to my mind every time I struggle in an English conversation, but I know that is possible to reach fluent by studying in my country and by myself. I’m trying to change my mindset about it , but it is s little hard. Sometimes I think go abroad and study something different which is not an English course, but I have fear it to be so hard and this experience frustrating me more if I don’t get the content or something like that.... anyway, thanks Stefanie again, your advices and contend are helping me a lot, bye! Cheers !!! ✌🏾🇧🇷

I've always wanted to go to an English speaking country, especially the USA, to help me with my English speaking skills and also with my self-esteem. I love speaking English, and people say my English is pretty good... but whenever I have to talk to a foreigner, I shut down. My anxiety takes over and I can't say a word. That's a drag! Oh and by the way, I love your channel! I think you should even create a podcast about teaching English to foreigners. I'd love to hear it daily. Xoxo
