    I cannot believe after this Hulk Hogan tonight show appearance in 1982 that the AWA did not make him their megastar and make him the champion by the end of 1982. That is the biggest blown opportunity ever in the history of professional wrestling.

    A bodybuilding friend of mine went to California sometime in the mid-to-late 80s and ended up in one of Gold's Gyms. Hogan and a couple other guys were also there, having walked in a few minutes before my friend. He said Hogan did a sets of squats with 135, 225 and 315. Warmup done, he put 500lbs on the bar and in his words, "toyed with it." Couldn't believe how easily he got 10 reps...could have done 20, he said.

      KevinProNOW Why would you call bullshit? My most impressive lift in high school was a 555lb dead lift. I was a sophomore and weighed about 180. I know that sounds extreme. But I had worked out all my life up to that point. Grew up dirt poor and had to cut down trees as a kid to heat our house. All I had was a bow saw and an 8lb maul. Started dragging logs from the forest at 6 years old. By the time I was 7 I could hoist a 120lb log on my shoulders and cross the fields to get it to my house so I could saw them up to split. So by the time I got to high school I was stupid strong. I know everything I said sounds like bullshit to the average kid today because most people in America can’t fathom ever having to grow up this way, but that’s the way it was. So it comes as no surprise to me the fella above says he could squat 400lbs in high school. Same as I dead lifted 555.

      @BeeBumper Před 6 lety +1

      @mikes3827 Před 6 lety +2

      Not saying I'm anywhere close to being Hogan's size or having his strength, but I used to lift and "power bike" (i.e. climbed hills), and having never did a weighted squat in my life (age 18), had 225 pounds on the olympic bar and did 15 reps like it was nothing. Not bragging, I just always had strong legs, but doing hills made my legs incredibly strong. Never did a whole lot of squats afterwards, as I always felt it was damaging for the back & knees.

If anything you could give credit to the AWA, although despite Verne Gagne's claims that he created the gimmick, I think Hogan's own intuition and ability to read and interact with a crowd was the true source.

    Dude's arms were huge. Stallone must have turned him on to the real stuff at this point for Rocky 3. But most of the comments about the muscle definition are right. I think he did the big power movements, but never the bodybuilding techniques that get you ripped. Wrestlers ate out a lot. They ALWAYS travel. Hulk (Terry) always had a belly that he sucked in. In the movie as Thunderlips, he did have an outline of ab muscles, but nothing like Stallone. He was always on some kind of stimulant because he was always 'UP'. It's like he took pre-workouts all day long. If he wasn't such a likable guy, it would be VERY annoying. But he's entertaining and funny. Saw him when I was small. I will never forget that. You think AWA promoter Verne Gagne screwed the pooch on this one? Everything--Hulk Hogan, the name Hulkamania, the "superhuman comeback", the fame from "Rocky III", even an appearance on the biggest late night show on TV--Gagne had that sat in his lap. However, he didn't want to push Hogan as the number one face, so Hogan went back to the (W)WWF. The rest is history. The AWA went bust in 1990. Gagne should've done his best to hold onto Hulk Hogan and Jesse Ventura, at the very least. Even when all those other guys (Curt Hennig, Scott Hall, The Rockers, Rick Martel et al) left the company, the AWA still could've survived with Hogan and Ventura as its big stars (and probably would've been able to hold onto some of those other stars, considering the extra company income that Hogan and Ventura would've generated).

      Verne was a greedy bastard who tried to cheat him out of royalties...then he has the nerve to offer sheiky-baby a hundred thou to break Hogan's leg...what a douche bag. He and his promotion got what they deserved...a one way ticket to irrelevancy.

    • @manuginobilisbaldspot424

      Jeff nailed it. He didn't screw it up initially. He actually helped ELEVATE Hogan from a large guy to a large guy with charisma and a big time persona. But demanding some of Hogan's Japanese money and his merchandising was the fatal blow. Hogan was already the most popular wrestler in the world by early/mid 1983. YES, the world...that's how much of an impact Rocky III had. And they had him chasing Nick Bockwinkel everywhere for that belt and they printed money. But Gagne overplayed his hand. And Hogan was literally the tipping point. Once he left...Ventura, Heenan, Santana, Okerlund...they all followed. Wrestling would have been historically different if Hogan stayed and the AWA got the deal with CBS that was offered BECAUSE of Hogan for TV rights. Vince McMahon was too forward thinking not to have expanded the WWF...but it doesn't reach the heights without Hogan. It just doesn't work. You need a figurehead/torch bearer at in 1984, THE GUY without question was Hulk Hogan.

      Gagne also had Superstar Billy Graham for a spell during the early to mid-70s. Graham said he didn't want to stay in Minnesota because of the cold winters, but there was speculation Gagne made it clear Graham would never wear a belt. At the time, Graham was a huge draw and probably the most popular wrestler in the AWA. He leaves, and a few years later in comes Hogan and Gagne screws that one up, too.

    Agreed, credit where credit is due.VKM (who I dislike) realized wrestling was about to change with the explosion of cable (he wasn't the only one though) and made the changes,dropping Backlund as champ and bringing in Hogan POST-HASTE and put the belt on him immediately, then marketed the hell out of him. The right decisions aren't always the most complex, sometimes they're obvious but you have to have the smarts to capitalize on them. For the opposite story, see Verne Gagne's decisions on Hulk.

    To folks in denial, sorry. Just man up and realize that Hulkamania existed before Vinnie Mac Jr. brought Hulk back at the tail end of 1983. Hogan hit the big time once Rocky III came out (though he was popular before then). He was using the Hulkamania phrase while still in the AWA.

I started watching pro wrestling in late 1984 (About 9-10 mos. after he won the title from The Iron Sheik) and the guy who turned me on to it had been watching since Blassie was champ and subscribed to the various magazines etc....full of good info and insight. I got onto it the right way. I don't remember being told of those details. (Long time ago) Thanks.

      SID KNIGHT Arnold Schwarzenegger’s guns are arguably the most famous in human
      history, and rightly so. Stretching the tape to a full 22 inches, they
      weren’t just the biggest of his day (the late-’60s to the mid-’70s) but
      also the most ideally shaped.Its a different story... Hogans arms were big but looked smaller cause he had almost zero definition, he was just huge. I think its stupid to compare Anold and Hogan... Arnold was a bodybuilder and Hogan was a wrestler...:)
