  • Dear Friends,
    In the past 20 years more and more often musicians ask more and more frequently to install precision pegs on their Violin, Viola or Violon Cello. While in the vey beginning these precious pegs have been used only by beginners, nowadays it is more frequent to see even amateurs and professionals who use them with pleasure. I understand if you may not love them but the ease of tuning is definitely convincing and ta makes it a secure success for the future.
    Here I explain you detailed what other advantage it has and how it looks like.
    In case you want to know more about precision pegs, the cost and installation send me an eMail to: edgar@eruss.it

    I have Knilling adjustable pegs on my violin for 4 years now and really like them. Having arthritis in my hands makes tunning my violin painless and a breeze. I do also have a fine tunner on the E string which still makes the E string even easier to tune than just with the mechanical peg and gives the violin a classical look. I wish more luthiers would talk about these especially for younger players and even for experienced players as well. They make tunning so much easier and accurate.

      @@EdgarRuss, I have a Bunnel student violin that my teacher says I should keep forever. It has a pretty nice tone, and isn’t hard to play. But it has a plastic tailpiece with four fine tuners. I didn’t pay a lot for the fiddle, but should I replace the tailpiece with wood or metal? Should I put precision pegs in it instead of fine tuners? My ukulele has planetary tuners and I love them!

    Hi Edgar I just saw this video Yes the precision pegs are working out great for William and the sound of the violin is so beautiful!!!!! We love it so much and we want to thank you for making this awesome violin! William loves it very much!

      Thanks John for the wonderful comment regrading your sons new Linea Macchi Guarnier violin. I even talked yesterday to Williams teacher Wendy. What a nice person! she really loves her work and is taking care of her students. She appreciates very much your interest and research in the violinmaking trade. I think there might come some more instruments to some of her students. She likes the fact that I trade in the previous instrument purchased in my workshop.
      Meanwhile I wish you all the best for the new 2023 and as soon you organze a trip to Europe let me know.
      I contact you as well when I come to California.

    Hi Edgar, do you prefer the Knilling or Wittner? Which is better? And why?

    Edgar you are doing a LOT of musicians a BIG favour with this suggestion ! I have the Perfection Planetary Geared Peg set for cello and I can tell you that they make tuning MUCH easier and a real pleasure to use. Not only that, but to me, I find the cello a LOT prettier to look at without the four traditional fine tuners on the tailpiece! PLUS as you say, it sounds better too ! It may not look "professional" to some musicians but I say just get over it ! LOL! One little piece of advice my luthier gave me: if you have the choice between plastic or wood geared pegs, choose the PLASTIC set. They look just as nice as the wood ones but more importantly, they are not susceptible to changes in humidity and temperature therefore making them more stable within the peg box - Happy New Year and playing everyone !

      @@EdgarRuss SO very nice to hear from you, Edgar . . . and thank you for all your great (and fun!) informative videos! By the way, for those who "object" to the geared pegs "on principle" they should give them a try because the mind is like a parachute: it works best when open ! :-)

    Planetary for the violin family. Great idea.

    I've been using the similar PegHeds pegs for about eight years on my fine old Italian cello. I used them originally with the Velvet Compass strings and later with several different steel strings, all without fine tuners in the tailpiece. I recommend them without reservation although someone who's used to tuning with traditional friction pegs and has a habit of pressing them in all the time might need some time to adjust to how "loose" the geared pegs feel when turning. They're an incredible boon to string players, who all should be using them. Not mentioned in the video, these pegs also eliminate pegs slipping due to temperature changes or bumping into something with the instrument.

      The “peg heads”were the first ones on the market and are still the best ones. I called the owner, was thinking to take over his company, but actually there is nothing left and they are actually out of business and want to sell the name.😢

    Personally I would probably really enjoy those geared perfection pegs. The two main issues I'd have are emergency on-stage string replacements (would take a long time) and also concerns about reselling value.

      You can buy “string winders” (they are used a lot for guitars) yo wind the tuning head around quickly :-)

    Hi,
    thanks for the video, it was really helpful!! I’m a classically trained violinist and I’m in a high ability orchestra. I know I’m not but would you recommend these pegs for professional classical violinists??
    Thankyou

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  Před rokem +1

      I know it sounds strange; but I would probably use this kind of pegs even if I would be a professional musician. It makes the tuning so extremely easy AND since you can take off all the fine tuners it will sound even better.
      Let me/us know!

    Aren't the "precision pegs" much heavier than the classic ones and consequently change (deteriorate) the sound spectrum/flavour of the instrument?

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  Před rokem +5

      I have been also quite skeptic in the beginning, but actually there is very little difference. I even have the impression that there is less difference than between ebony and boxwood pegs. I know it seems impossible but that’s what I noticed!

    do the precision pegs change the sound of the violin?

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  Před rokem

      Usually everything changes a little. The fact that I install them without sound concerns is actually that they do not change.
      At least I could not tell you how they change!

    I had Wittner pegs installed on my cello last year. They are fabulous and keep everything where it needs to be, making adjustment much easier when I need to have it done.
    As an aside, the sound quality of this video is poor. It is something I’ve noticed in other vids of yours. It sounds like your lapel mic is getting overloaded

    Hi there! I just recently bought a new fiddle with Wittner fine tuner pegs already installed. I love them so far! My question is; is there any different considerations to take into account when changing the stings? Can I go about it the same way as with regular pegs?

      Hey, I don’t know about the violin yet, I just bought one, but my ukulele has planetary tuners, and it’s actually a bit easier to change strings on it than friction or geared tuners.
