Decades of drinking from first thing in the morning until going to bed, hes pickled and I bet he would need a medical detox to safely stop drinking is my guess. When your body is so dependent on it those hangovers don't matter anyway because you never stop drinking, thats why "hair of the dog" makes them feel better in the morning and not worse like a normal person would. Alcohol is cruel because its almost like you have to be a bit of an alcoholic to actually enjoy it otherwise its too toxic feeling and the hangover over isn't worth it but with a decent tolerance you can keep the buzz going for long benders and just wake up and start in the morning again the next day.
