The University of Utah Singers perform "Lo, How a Rose/The Rose" by Craig Hella Johnson live in concert, December 11th & 12th, 2009 in Libby Gardner concert hall under the direction of Dr. Brady Allred.

In all honesty, this was one of my favorite pieces I ever performed in choir. Despite what people say negatively about it, it's actually a beautiful piece.
I can very well imagine. This is such an exquisite arrangement and thank you for such a moving performance. It has brought me so much joy over the years.
I love this song so much I’m actually doing a solo and performing it at Carnegie Hall I use this song to relax I really think this is one of the most beautiful pieces I’ve heard💙
My choir is doing this song, sometimes music isn't about technical difficulty, but about music that uplifts us. Craig Hella Johnson's compositions are incredibly moving and this choir does a good job in executing it.
I have been listening to this off and on for 13 years and it ceases to move me as a piece of music and a moving message.

I love this concert hall the one blonde girl.. with the page boy haircut.. reminds me of my first wife.. and the young last singer.. reminds me of me.. I grew a beard to hide my chin.... When I was in college.. I have great memories of the University of Utah..

I just heard the Saint Olaf choir perform this medley. A bit jarring initially, but a burst of creative genius to blend these songs: Joins the message of hope of the birth of a Savior with the notion that we all can be born anew if our urge toward love is nurtured . . .
I had my very first choir solo with the song and I almost lost it at one point but kept it and the winter concert was the best night of my life! I’ll never forget it!
Wonderful. There is great value in engaging your own weakness as you sing; pushing at your limits; descending into the depths of the meaning, even if almost overcome by it as you do. The struggle, victory or not, brings so much power to the presentation. Few can resist the beauty of it as your deepest self expresses its encounter with the deepest meaning.
The choir is outstanding! Beautiful voices and excellent direction.
I think this is exceptionally beautiful. Jesus is referred to as a rose. He is the Rose blooming from Jesse's tree. And in the song sung by Bette Midler she's saying love is a rose, which Jesus is love. Very well done in my opinion. I praise the Mighty Name of Jesus. I love You, my sweet precious Saviour, Jesus Christ. 🌹🕊✝🙏🏻❤️

It's a medley of "The Rose" by Amanda McBroom and the hymn/carol "Lo, How a Rose".
Who would have thought that Michael Praetorius (c 1571) and Bette Midler could have been merged into something of such great musical beauty. I love it.

I got lucky the one time I did this - my choir director had me on the "Lo, How a Rose" part but as an Alto rather than a Tenor (so I got to sing the whole time instead of just the last part).

I'm uncomfortable with this, mostly because I've never liked "The Rose," but I will admit it is cleverly assembled and beautifully sung.

The question was a rhetoric, trying to say that no matter how good we are, we're in no place to dismiss other people's hard work, especially in art where most of it is subjective. They bring joy to people without causing harm and making insults, we should appreciate for what it is, an art to uplift people's spirit, not some show-off platform.
I don't watch mlp, but yeah, we should just stop. I think I did enough harm to this beautiful choir by marring its comment space with senseless argument.

The rose is the song I chose for my wedding.. with my third wife.. who was only 25.. and would never have gotten married.. because she was so shy.. and now we have two children almost grown up.. I reminded by the movie.. it's a wonderful Life.. where because the man Jimmy Stewart had died and seeing how it would have been if he had committed suicide.. and Donna Reed the actress.. would have never gotten married.. and never had children.. we played that movie every Christmas with my children particularly by daughter.. and we pride our eyes out.. so I chose this song for a wedding song because my wife was so shy.. she never would have gotten married.. she was the third child.. and would have been like her aunt.. who was the third child who never got married.. or had children.. it is a Christmas song for me.. a very good matchup between Michael pretorius's.. song of the 1600s.. another good bashup of this song.. is LeAnn Rimes The Rose.. with the Los Angeles

These are 2 of my favorite songs in the world, so I really like this...BUT...It doesn’t quite work, does it...very nice, but never quite mashes up. More like a sting-together...Loses some of the most poignant moments of Lo How a Rose along the way. Beautifully and musically rendered.
Yes, you were bragging that you were in gold winning ensemble and that you disliked choirs that sounds better without accompaniment in your opinion should not be accompanied, and prior to that, you only think those that sings a capella are real choir.

Your opinion is the greatest of all and should be heeded when you think some choirs are not 'real' choir.
Around 12 years in an ensemble that has won 16 consecutive years of golds graded on a national scale. I strongly dislike various accompanied versions of songs that are sung better A capella.
Many songs are beautiful with an accompaniment such as Visions by the Vocal Essence ensemble. Solo pieces are generally accompanied and do sound great however I still prefer unaccompanied solo pieces such as Many Years sung by the great Vladimir Miller.

This is very good,but the two pieces should never be combined."Lo How a Rose" is beautiful by itself. as is "The Rose"One part of the brain wants the former,for its reference to the Messiah and you know what the latter is referring to.
Despite the cognitive dissonance, though, it is a solid piece and Johnson did a great job with it. It can definitely feel a bit dull, especially if you are one of the tenors and basses who aren't doing anything for the first half, but I would still argue that the idea does work.

You asked me how knowledgeable I was about choral singing so I shared with you my experience. I stated that Generally I enjoy unaccompanied choirs more however stated that I do enjoy the opposite on occasion and even sited an example. I also admitted I sounded like a hater by stating that real choirs sing A Cappella. I did not intend to come off this way(as a hater). I'm getting tired of this conversation, you probably are too. Lets just watch some my little pony and hug it out.

Beautiful performance, very very odd, and somewhat disgraceful, mashup.
I disagree with you. I think that they go very well together, and the whole idea is to mix classical or traditional with modern and popular. I think that it is very well done all the way around.
Real choirs sing A cappella.
The mixture of these two pieces is quite disturbing. Why destroy the beauty of Low How A Rose with intersections of LeAnn Rimes Some Say Love? It makes no musical sense.

This is positively the worst rendition of this song I have ever heard!
