Never heard of Maverick City so I went into research mode. They sound great but I am wholeheartedly with Angel on this. I would definitely put them in the Christian/Worship genre. I can certainly hear the difference.

I saw them in concert with Kirk recently and obviously people knew their music. They are more worship and praise.

They most definately are closer to TRBL or Elevation in terms of sound that a soulful Ricky Dillard or Jekalyn Carr, but I never saw Christian Contemporary as seperate from Gospel. Just another sub-genre. I always looked at Gospel as a genre with subgenres (Gospel Rap, Contemporary Gospel, Choir etc) like Rock (Atlernative, Heavy Metal, Grundge etc). This whole is it gospel thing is just interesting to me. We all talking about God anyway.

Verzuz didn’t go back to separate spaces format after that. Also, I think ppl are trying to recreate the competitive atmosphere that Lox vs. Dipset had, but that was a once in a lifetime moment that cannot be done again.

It’s not just that the song has a different melody and count, but when it loses some of the umph I tend to consider it contemporary Christian. And I want more Black people in contemporary Christian categories anyway, so I’m okay with it.

If we’re being honest, artists such as Tye Tribbett, Mali Music, and Deitrick Haddon are the bridge between CCM and Gospel. I do think there is a spectrum when it comes to this music that is you shouldn’t equate/compare the two ends of the spectrum

Agreed! I've also come to learn that Gospel is amazing but not all of it is considered worship music. I was raised on Gospel music and eventually lived in an environment where Gospel music was not as accessible on the radio stations. I recall asking my friend on the worship team why they didn't do certain songs at church, and she pointed out that a lot of those songs that I referenced focused on us and not Jesus. Since then, it's really given me more perspective on what type of songs I sing and what I am really aiming for: jams or worship.

Disclaimer: I am a Kirk guy 100% but I view Maverick City is like a gumbo or stir fry, where it’s a combination of all. You have your gospel, your inspirational, your CCM etc because the group was created in the diversity of those genres. So to me they are in their own lane which may not be a bad thing but just gospel I don’t consider them there.
