Use Your Smartphone As a Camera Monitor | Average Filmmaker

  • The inbuilt monitor in cameras is usually terrible when shooting videos. A dedicated video monitor can also be VERY EXPENSIVE! So a better and cheaper option is to use your smartphone as a camera monitor. In this video, I will show you how!
    ◄The Parts I Use In This Video►
    (some parts are not exactly the same that I use. I had parts lying around. But it should work as good.)
    Video Capture Card 1080P: geni.us/TLZaJgt (Amazon)
    USB-C to USB Adapter OTG Cable: geni.us/nWKIhzR (Amazon)
    HDMI to Mini HDMI: geni.us/xaN4 (Amazon)
    HDMI to Micro HDMI: geni.us/4QeKTO (Amazon)
    In general, there are two options when it comes to using the phone as a camera monitor. You can use Wi-Fi or use a capture card an OTG cable and an HDMI cable to connect the camera to the phone. The con with using the WI-FI is that you can control the camera but usually you get more latency and it's only working if your camera is supporting that function. Using the other method works on all cameras that have an HDMI output. Making a DIY video monitor for around 30-40 bucks is a good deal.
    In this video, I will show how to connect everything together and what app you can use on your phone to display the images from the camera.

      I was connecting via wifi using a Vaxis transmitter but the picture broke up when I moved the camera. I tried your solution hard wired from the Vaxis and it works perfectly, no latency. The problem I have is when initially turning everything on Google sends me lots of Adverts and currently the display is anamorphic but I assume that's the phone. I have not tried recording with the capture card as I record on the camera which by the way is a Sony over eleven years old.

    "Jittery movement/Latency": Your video is just what I was looking for as I try to setup my Galaxy Note 8 Android phone to monitor my Panasonic GH3 or Canon 5D Mark 2 on the new Weebill-S gimbal. I already had a 4K Cam Link capture unit and the Note 8 comes with Samsung's own OTG adapter, so I thought I would be all set. The problem is that when I monitor either camera on the phone the view is a great deal of latency and would be unusable. I am testing with the free version of the app you suggested with the intention of buying if it worked well. Do you have any thoughts on why this problem is happening? Could it be the app itself (although I have now tested with 3 apps). Have you found a better one? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

    • @lukogs
      @lukogs Před 3 lety

      I assume this is your question: I wanna record video with my phone (say Samsung S9) and i want the other person to see what I'm recording with their phone (say Moto G).
      Answer: Camara app doesn't support that; as of now phone display doesn't have video out function (Samsung has started with their DEX).
      My answer is Video calling + screen recording. You call the other person, set the main camera, turn on screen recording. This way you get the video recorded on your phone and other person can see via the video call.
      Downside to this: Phone gets hot and battery drains fast.
