It's honestly sad how many people think Lupe is just that one rapper who used to make songs about skateboarding and rainbows. When in reality he is arguably the best lyricist walking the earth right now

I feel like a lot of us enjoy all the sides Lupe has shown us but one thing that people underestimated about Lupe is his pen skills and specifically his story telling. Most people don't want to look too deep into his god tier writing unless it's very simple and spoonfed like kick push. Lupe in general is underrated af and is a top 15 rapper ever no question.

"Conversations with the constellations... You were so busy trying to shine, you should've been trying to save us" hits different. Especially when you consider the different definition of modern stars (could be talking to hip-hop stars, pop stars, celebrities in general for not speaking up on many of the issues [racism and beyond] that are still around today). That connection of bringing a past tragedy and connecting it with the present to show that the fight isn't over is executed flawlessly. Lupe a Goat

My mind is blown. Like I'm aware that one meaning of this song is about Lupe's issues with Atlantic Records. Basically the artists under a big label are the slaves and the contracts/deals are the slaveships and Lupe is telling the artists to jump of the ship and do one of two things. Either find your way back to 'Africa' or stay in Atlantic (records) and bring down other 'ships.' Or some analogy like this.
However, I did not even think about the later verses when Lupe personifies the forest and the stars. That is amazing. But what could the forest refer too? Who are they that are in the chorus, cheering, supporting, and encouraging artist into joining these awful labels and accepting the scam record deals. Is it the audience or family or other media?

This song always brings a tear to my eye. Think about just the slavery layer here (not ignoring the others): chattel slave trade was so encompassing in its physical destructiveness and brutality that folks began to question the idea of nature being inherently good. How could the sea, the forest, the stars in the sky all turn their backs on us and not only let this happen but actively contribute to it? My God, you built all this allegedly for us and yet it was used to perfect the art of dominating/killing us. What’s a sunset or starry sky to a slave? What is beautiful about life if I am to be born into bondage? What does it even mean? How could you let it come to this? It’s not anger or even desperation, it’s something else. It’s heartbreak.

What’s really interesting about the cadence/beat of his catalogue of ships verse is that it’s that of a coxswain, reminiscent of what you might expect on a slave galley. Additionally, the rhythm of the sea/waves also comes through, so just as the fleet itself might be described as a sea of ships, it also coincides with the water highways they traversed.
The use of both the lyrical imagery and the beat/meter to construct multiple layers of meaning is remarkable.

As he lists the slave ships and it just starts going on and on and on and on and on it becomes too much, you start questioning how humanity could possibly be responsible for atrocities like this; how could you put an entire group of people into bondage and steal their lives from them and subject them to this? This reaction was closer to literary criticism, and rightly so because this track is literature

It’s not actually two distinct halves like people think. It uses a midpoint time jump. Midpoints in storytelling can sometimes change genre. That’s what Lupe has done with this album.

This is easily one of the greatest songs ever made imo. it's such a shame no media outlet will give it the credit it deserves.

Great reaction as always. Slight point of correction though. That entire verse is just the names of slave ships. It was likely named after/came from Bristol England. Shout out from "New England" Bristol County, Massachusetts to be specific. ;)
