Learning about Freud in college was not fun. It was in every textbook of every psych class I took (I took 7 psych classes) and not one of my teachers ever said anything about his theories being debunked. It was awful.
Ugh. That is the worst.
Yeah, so this is really interesting. Freud is super problematic in that people still take what he says about the origins of sexuality to be literal, scientific fact. He also does nothing to challenge the prevailing notions of his time about minority sexualities (or "perverted" sexualities, in his language) being wrong, or in need of correcting. However, he does use his ideas about queer people and people with fetishes to make the claim that sexuality is really complicated, and that "normal," straight sexuality is not as natural or straightforward as it seems. He also says that people repress the parts of their sexualities that don't fit in with norms, and that that repression traumatizes them. Sorry for the info-dump. I've just been reading his Essays on the Theory of Sexuality for class, so this has been on my mind.
This info-dump is very interesting. I considered making this video longer, and including more information about how Freud was problematic, but honestly I just kind of wanted to make something to distract myself from constantly refreshing the election results. I think this is really good information for people to know.
It’s much more interesting to analyze Freud as a sociologist or philosopher rather than a psychologist or scientist. Also, IIRC he apparently developed a more understanding view of non-heteronormative sexualities later in his life, even chastising society for not being accepting of them.
I do think Freud is more enjoyable if you read his work as a philosopher

Mh yeah, pretty sure we still learned some Freudian theories in school without a big "this has been debunked and we're only talking about it for historical/cultural context".

Why would Freud have been homophobic? He officially opposed the first dsm’s labelling of homosexuality as a neurodegenerative disorder and as a disease in general. If you’re at least slightly educated, you would know that this was very very unconventional and extremely progressive for the time.
Hey, you can be "progressive for the time" and also not helpful for the here and now - this is very much so a discussion that was happening in the context of 2020.
