  • Over the weekend, Péter Eötvös, Kossuth Prize-winning composer and conductor, one of the most renowned contemporary opera composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away at the age of 80. A prominent figure in Hungarian and international contemporary music, he was admitted to the Franz Liszt Academy of Music at the age of fourteen on the recommendation of Zoltán Kodály. He began his musical career as the musical director of the Vígszínház (Comedy Theatre). Between 1963 and 1971, he composed film and theater scores, including music for films by Zoltán Fábri, Károly Makk, Zoltán Huszárik, and István Szabó. In 1966, he moved to Cologne, where he studied conducting at the Musikhochschule, and then became a répétiteur at the Cologne Opera from 1967 to 1968. He was a member of the Stockhausen Ensemble until 1976, and during this time, he was regularly invited as a guest conductor. From 1985 to 1988, he conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London on several occasions, and from 1992 to 1995, he was a regular guest conductor of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and also performed with the National Philharmonic Orchestra on multiple occasions.
In 1994, he became the principal conductor of the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra. From 2003 to 2005, he was the conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, from 2003 to 2007, he was the conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and from 2009 to 2011, he was the first guest conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
In 2004, he returned to Hungary.
In 1991, he founded the International Eötvös Institute Foundation, and in 2004, the Péter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation. His foundations support young composers and conductors.
This - at least in its second half - liberated conversation was conducted by Sándor Friderikusz with Péter Eötvös in 2015.
