- I've been having issues with my gear selector/clutch for a while now and in this video something happened I was NOT expecting to happen. After the adrenaline wore off and I watched the footage back, I realised how dangerous it COULD have been!

Mine does that from N > 1st. You have to have the clutch handle out a little, not all the way in, and will engage every time. It's common i'm sure they all do it. Once you know this you'll be fine every time.
mine was over adjusted when i got it. now set to bite about 10-15mm ish from the bar. if it dosn't drop in let clutch out in nutral and retry . clutch adjuster near clutch arm . top of gearbox . 2min job. mine did the same to me . second run out.. had bikes since 1987 so don't think it's a one off.... your clutch will be biteing late ... set it so you hand isn't stretched but can full disengage ... mines set about 10mm from bars and been fine since . front ends light more so with a low fuel level and pillion and back box on.
I have the 2023 R model. I was having the problem with not being able to put the bike in gear when i was riding it the first few days.
Then I learned to keep the gear lever pressed down and release the clutch gradually. As you gradually release the clutch the bike goes in to gear or out of gear, (depending what you are trying to do) every single time.
So I have no problem with that anymore. I just do the clutch release method.
I have a similar problem on my Lexmoto 125 and have found to pop it into first before I come to a full stop.
When my CB plays up like that, I found it helps to blip the throttle and slip the clutch just a bit while changing gears
I’ll try that as well! A few others have commented saying theirs do it as well. Think I may have to contact the Honda Dealer and ask if they can look at it when it goes in for its service!
the yamaha ybr 125 had this issue. it was common and all you had to do was rev the bike with the clutch in and drop it down into 1st and it would make a big ol clunk and then bike fixed lol. ive had 2 ybrs and they both had this issue. just a cheap basic gearbox ..... nothing wrong with the bike.
You might need to adjust your clutch. There's an adjuster at the lever (may have a jonny on it), free play should be about 10-20mm.
Also, if the engine has been idling a while, you might need to give it a bit of a rev, that'll get a bit more oil flowing through the gearbox.
It happens on all bikes if you stop in the wrong gear. When you are comming up to a stop (either a roundabout or give way) drop it through the gears and keep the clutch pulled in coast to the stop. Make sure you are in first before you come to a complete stop.
Narration: I've been having some gear changing issues and at this roundabout I panicked, over revved and released the clutch too quickly. This could have been really dangerous and I'm glad I lived to tell the tale.

i have this same bike on a 72 plate (white, too!) & i've had the gear issues you're mentioning once or twice but only ever when i'm "block changing/block shifting" gears (i.e 3rd > 1st in one clutch hold) when stopping. I can't see your clutch hand leading up to the roundabout to tell if you were doing the same thing. however, at the junction @ 4:42 you did stop in 3rd and try to change all the way down & that seemed to upset the gears
if i slow down gradually and do it sequentially i.e 3rd > 2nd, let clutch out slightly until i feel it start to engage 2nd, then clutch back in & 2nd > 1st, i've never had any issues. i've been doing this ever since because I just figured i'd been downshifting wrong.
would love an update on what they say if you do bring it up at the 600 mile service. i've just taken mine in for its 600 miles & because i'd changed how i've been downshifting i never even thought to mention it.

Yeah that’s where I think I might be going wrong! Stopping in 3rd and trying to go down to first. I’m going to try and go down the gears next time, like you mentioned and see how that turns out!

@@LeonsVlogsx Getting into 1st while still rolling should also help. Bikes don't always like shifting gears while stationary.
I did the same on a large roundabout. Luckily it was 9.30am Sunday morning so it was still a bit quiet. I was so scared. I actually put my foot down in the middle of the roundabout and came to a complete stop. It was Scary. My 125cc only had 150 miles on it so still a bit inexperienced.
I have the same problem where I have to completely stop, switch off, switch on again and if Hi am lucky it finds gear. The bike only has 174 miles so it’s an issue with new bikes I read.
I’m glad I’m not the only one. Seems to be a common fault on these newer CB125F. I’ll have a word with my dealer and get them to sort it when it goes in for its service!
Yo that was cool, unintended, but cool. They might be small bikes but they still try to eat you from time to time. Chalk it up to experience and try to be smooth on the controls. Did it recently, shoulder check in busy traffic, leaned back a bit and accelerated and whey hey I'm on the back wheel with car drivers shaking their heads at me, like hey, I didn't mean to do that! 😂 😎👍
Did an unintentional wheelie on CBT 20 years ago , though not as bad as young kid going over handlebars on a 50cc scooter a few minutes into day
Just my thoughts - motorcycle gearbox will not change gears if they are not turning. If stopping, make sure you change down to first *before* coming to a complete standstill, otherwise may be very difficult to get back to first gear when stopped. While at a standstill and clutch lever is pulled, again gears are not turning. So it might help if you release the clutch lever while in neutral, then pull it in and push down on the gear lever simultaneously, or a split second after. The idea is to select first while the gears are still turning. Also I believe you said it's only done 600 miles so far, so the gearbox is waay nowhere near run yet. So I wouldn't be surprised if it's stiff. Should improve with mileage. Hope that makes sense. 😊

the only time i pulled wheelies on my cb125f was when i was going uphill on a 1:4 gradient with hairpin on askrigg common in the yorkshire dales, and as the bike started to struggle in 2nd (im 6' and 19st) i dropped it into first and the front wheel was really up in the air, luckily i immediately came off the power and got it down. the 2nd time was up the 1:3 rosedale chimney bank, same scenario, and i wasn't as gentle as should have been and the bike took off, spitting me off. I came to the conclusion that you can't drop it into 1st if moving more than a few mph, as it's too low geared, it wasn't the bike, and ive never had any probs with the gearbox, it was me and my inexperience at the time. sorry but i didnt watch the full vid, but maybe this helps. If your stationary and are struggling to switch it out of neutral hold the clutch and roll it at the same time switch gear.
keep the bike moving when changing gear, even just crawling at 1 mph will help, when standstill you will need to rock the bike back and forward to change, it happens a lot more often on the small 125's, my grom will get stuck in neutral at junctions and roundabouts so i always drop to 1 and just hold the clutch in, occasionally happens on my tenere 700, guess its just motorbikes gearboxes.
I have the same clutch/gear issue! I’ve only done approx 110 miles. Have you resolved it yet?
Not yet! A couple of other people have mentioned they’ve had the same issues. Looks like it’s a common fault!
Check the slack, it might need adjustment.
Most Honda's are the same with the gears, but especially the 125. Firm push down required, my instructor told me when I had my 125 to give some rev's when dropping down in to 1st and it tends to go in then. If you change whilst it's still rolling it should pop in fine with a firm push down, but stationary rev's should fix it.

Yeh, that's your mistake. Don't change gears at a standstill, the gearbox needs to be spinning to accomplish that.
Its your clutch cable setting you need to have it looked at.

You need to do it nice and smooth go down gears,
if you about to come to a stop have gear in 1st when your speed 20mph put in 1st around 15mph

Thanks for the tips! I’ve tried going slowly down the gears before but it just keeps freezing up and not letting go down.

Cbf 124cc chain slack is meant to be 25mm (actually 20-30mm in the manual), when measured it comes out somewhere between 2.5 and 3 cm

Wait, when's this gear thing happening? Is it just 2nd/neutral going down to 1st?
That's a "failure" mode of these dog boxes. There are no synchros, so unless the dogs are aligned, at least one shaft must be spinning.
If you're block changing down to 1st coming up to a junction, make sure you've done your gear changes by the time you're doing 5-10mph. If you're going to sit in neutral, let the clutch out until you've made the decision to get into gear. And when you pull the clutch in, click it into gear right away. Don't let the shaft spin down, otherwise it can lock up like that.
declutch and reapply clutch, that'll release the selector and allow you to drop it into 1st.
And Check your oil and your chain play If you having problems Changing gears

This is completely normal on bikes. If the gear doesnt go in release clutch in neutral then put it in 1st. Also when going down gears learn to rev match as especially going down to 1st it wont be good without the rev match. Also check slack on the cable it should be about 1cm. Its basically the distance the clutch freely moves before you feel any pressure. But i mean dont worry about this its completely normal and most bikes you cant just go down gears with clutch pressed and you need to release and rev match in between as motorbikes unlike cars dont have synchronised gearboxes. Just watch some videos of revmatching and youll quickly learn. Like from what i could see you went down 3 gears whilst holding the clutch there and even my 650 wouldnt handle that.
That makes perfect sense! I’ll try doing that next time I’m out and see how it goes. Definitely something I should be doing then! Like you say they’re not the same as car gearboxes, which I didn’t know until now! Thanks for the comment and helping out, appreciate it!
If it happens just rock your bike back and forth a bit and you should be able to get it into gear
Check your clutch settings and that the clutch lever is fully engaged when being used. Chain tension matters also. Enjoy your ride !!
Fun fact, you don't need the clutch to switch gear
Down gearing you do if you don't have a quickshifter. Going up is fine.
@@N269 you don't need a quickshifter at all, it is harder than downshifting but with a bit of practice can be done smoothly
