I have lots of memories of traveling this highway from the 60s to 2010. I don't live in Taranaki now and plan to return and travel to Hamilton this year, just to see the changes. The Awakino Gorge bypass of that tunnel, Mt Messenger, and all other changes. From the 60s travelling this highway has given me many fond memories. Car sickness, windy and gravel roads, sheep and cattle being moved... and trucks.
Thankyou Will beautiful videography. Have you truck spotted the Coast road from Westport to Greymouth? That's the 7th most scenic Drive in the world apparently. I enjoy driving it.
Some good driving on challenging roads...beautiful to watch. Some of our roads in NZ are poor to say the least...however drive to the conditions and your talent level and these roads can be very enjoyable. Such a shame we share the roads with shithouse drivers equipped with equally shithouse attitudes and ability.
@@finnrasmussen8153 around it imho I wondered if they could have punched a tunnel through, I have always loved this bit of the journey it does not take long to drive over it even in a loaded truck, I would have gone over Mt messenger since the early 50s, more twisty than today, My First recollection was going with my cousin taking tractor to the old MOW camp near Ahititi and that was an old Morris Commercial from that era. I used to drive for BP in the 70s so trips over the mountain were fun if not slow in a TK bedford or Commer ridgid tanker. I took a small Commer tanker still in Europa colours, a petrol slant engine, what a smooth wee truck, quiet as. Love watching these videos Thanks Will another great post
I grew up in Taranaki. In the late 60s we were coming home from Aria near Piopio (King Country), around 9pm, Dad got our van stuck in the tunnel because a car didn't give way. In those days the tunnel was smaller and narrower. You had to sound your horn through the tunnel. We got home at around 2am.
They do millions of miles a yr millions ..an have their share of prangs ...a long drawbar can disassemble itself from the unit without taking the Entire unit out. In otherwords break lol ..fact

not sure why fontera has such a long draw bars, they arn't even allowed to reverse, let alone jack knife them.
It apparently aids in trailer stability.

When I'm on Mt messenger, I never see trucks on it?
danger training school driving 🚛
Hope this route gets turned in to a scenic route been over it in the car. 🙅☕️
I think it will remain as there are farm access at the top by the carpark
how steep in Messenger???
you truckers looking forward to messenger by past
not really, its not a bad bit of road, you just have to pay attention, in saying that it will cut 30 mins off to any where north
The local paper states six minutes from an NZTA report, hardly worth it I think. Still takes about four hours to Auckland from New Plymouth.
What is the name of this mountain?
Mount Messenger Taranaki North Island
14:22 what was that Hilux doing
Cutting the corner....
