I know this song is not complex but I like it so much. It’s only rock”n roll but I like it. It’s kinda song with a classic rock vibe; it shows the versatility of the band and and their bluesy side, especially Asami (I really love her voice in this one ). This song reminds me of Whitesnake or Deep Purple. Music is a very subjective matter.

"Dancing With The Devil" marks Midori's first songwriting credits with the band, as she co-writes the lyrics with Asami and the music with Mao. Midori noted that the BPM is slow for a Lovebites song, and said it is meant to be heavy and groovy.

Hey David! Don't worry about about butt-hurt people. People these days get their panties in a twist over anything and everything. Screw them!! Regarding this song.... Do I like this song? Yes, I think it's a fun song. Is it my favorite Lovebites song? Not even close. There's only one LB song that I don't like, and I'll keep the name of that song to myself. About your score.... First of all, scores are very subjective. Your score is simply that - YOUR score. Would I have scored it higher? Yeah, probably a little, but I totally understand your reasoning for the score you gave. I've said it before and i'll say it again....This is YOUR channel, and if people don't like what you do on it, they don't have to watch it. To my fellow Wolfpack members.... You watch Lovebites because you love the music. Not everyone is going to agree with you and that's OK. I happen to love this band, but if someone else says, "Eh, not my thing." That's OK; I don't need them to approve of my choice in music. So don't jump on David's back. If you think the song deserves a score of 10.0, that's fine. He thinks it deserves a 7.7, and that's fine too. OK, I'll get off of my soap box now! Peace!!!

Never made the Motley Crue connection but see it now. You did catch most of Haruna's unique double kick use here but go back and listen to the chorus. It has a bit of a bouncy feel in it during the first half because she has a rest maybe a 4 count on her double kick and on the second half it is constant. Smart drumming to change the feel. Very different song from them but a well done song.

LOVEBITES - Dancing With The Devil lyrics:
I don’t like to be controlled
You should know by now my baby
I’m pretty much sick and tired of how childish you are
    Don’t mess with me anymore
Say what you want, there’s no use in lying to me
    It’s written on your face
    “I can't live, I can’t live without you”
Look in the mirror, would you
Everything is clearly in my hands
    Everything’s exactly how I planned
    Everything is under my control
Did you think you were free?
Running ‘round with your collar on
Everything you wanted was a fake
Everything for me is just a game
    Everything you see is fantasy
Did you even think that you ever had a chance to win?
Did you expect me to say something like “I miss you, baby”
Just shut up and cut the drama
I don’t need to hear your whining
The choice is not yours, babe
Say what you want, there’s no use in lying to me
    It’s written on your face
    “I can’t live, I can’t live without you”
Look in the mirror, would you
Everything is clearly in my hands
    Everything’s exactly how I planned
    Everything is under my control

They need a slower song like this to rest a little bit in the middle of a show because they shred more than most metal bands. It makes perfect sense to me. Art, including music, has value based on subjectivity. So you are doing the right thing stating an honest score. I especially appreciate you taking the time to explain with respect (too much respect?) to LOVEBITES and the Wolfpack.
By the way, we have to consider. That is the fact that performers at live performances provide music not for "people who pick up one song on the Internet and listen to it" but for "people who paid for tickets and came to the live venue". . There are a lot of things a band has to think about when creating a program. They consider the audience's (and the band's) "excitement", "fatigue", "boring", "enjoyable", etc., when designing song selection, song order and performance. That's why I think that not only 10-point songs but also 7-point songs are necessary for live performances. I sometimes fear that there are reactors out there who judge a band after watching a live video or two. (Not David Heretic of course) hahaha.

What I like about this song is Asami's sassiness, and the way she delivers the lines and her stage presence. Do her vocal tricks at the end fit the song? Ummm, well maybe, maybe not, I kind of see your point. She was trying to bring in her R&B background into a metal song. It was OK, but since I am not an R&B fan it didn't make the song more enjoyable for me, kind of the opposite to be honest. It was different though and shows how versatile the band is. I took the time a while ago to rank every Lovebites song from my most favorite down to my least. If you do that, there obviously has to be songs at the bottom. For me, this is one of them. I have it in the bottom ten. But, like you said, it is still a good song.

  • @snakewhisperer1

No animosity. Not every song can be your favorite. I personally dig the song, But as you alluded to, a lot of that has to with nostalgia as I came of age in that era (not just Motley Crue, but also the album Quiet Riot did with Paul Shortino....and Shortino IS a good singer). Yeah, I think the R&B stylings I feel were a little much for this type of song too. But that's her roots and she made the decision to throw it in there. That's cool. There are other songs in their catalog that are actually weaker to my ear. But that's the way it goes with any band. Individuals are going to like some songs better than others. And they have such a vast catalog with so many different styles, it's bound to happen. Enjoyed the reaction.

Speaking of perspective, I come to this song with one that differs. For me, this isn't a standalone song. I see it as a change of pace concert song and a bit playful, meant to be taken within the context of a concert, rather than as emblematic of Lovebites. It's one of the things I most appreciate about them, that they don't chain themselves to any specific style. Mixed in throughout their discography are little nuggets like this that are unexpected surprises that make their 'harder' songs all the more appealing.

    • @danw6048
      @danw6048 Před rokem +2

I agree with you. This was the 11th song of the set and they were about to start the home stretch. Miyako especially needed something slower and simpler since she, of course, didn't get the break during her Chopin Etude of the Revolution (after just playing Shadowmaker). The crowd needed a chance to breathe also. This song was omitted from their 2021 setlist with A Frozen Serenade filling the same role. A Frozen Serenade , though, is a superior song in my opinion.

@@GrayFox14 No need to apologize for harshness. I found your comment more funny than harsh. I always write what I think. I agree with you that Dancing with the Devil is a good song. Where did I say that it wasn't a good song? To me most Lovebites songs are great, a few are masterpieces and the rest are good. This one falls in the latter category. I do not agree that Lovebites did not think about how a song would be played live. A touring band will always think about how a song will sound live, especially a band at the level of Lovebites. If you don't think Midori thought about how this song would sound live while she was composing it then you are crazy, and you insult Midori. They might not of known the exact setlist but they did know that most, if not all, of the songs from Electric Pentagram would be played on their 2020 tour. Eight of the 12 songs on Electric Pentagram were played at the Zepp DiverCity show out of an 18 song setlist. In their three 2021 shows, 9 of the 12 Electric Pentagram were performed. When you combine the two 2020 shows with the three 2021 shows, ALL of the Electric Pentagram songs were performed. Sorry for my harshness, but to think these songs were composed with no thought of how they would sound live is complete nonsense.
The rest of what you wrote makes absolute no sense to me, especially the mention of Stockholm Syndrome (not a legal term).

You had me going for a bit there David, I was bracing for a 6 point something! 😅
The score is pretty fair, and I'll concede this is a departure from their usual style and tempo. The song has actually grown on me after a few listens, and it's worth watching the version with closed captions, as the lyrics are a hoot - talk about fury and the woman scorned!
I believe that this song was intended to showcase Asami's R&B background, and I actually love her sassy outro vocals. The poor woman has been called the Metal Mariah, which I don't think was meant as a compliment, so she can't win! Check out her acoustic version of Rising (just Asami and Miyako on piano) for a performance that you'd expect to see in a smoky blues joint. If nothing else, this track illustrates their versatility. How many bands will deliver a Chopin piano piece and an R&B rocker mixed in with a power metal setlist? Only Lovebites, bless them.🤗

Great honest reaction and score as ever 👍For me it sounded also familiar and don’t laugh at me, but I listened to Deep Purple…. I like this song a lot. Why ??? Her voice sounds amazing, not the high notes all the time and on top of the music and not overpowered by it. And yes I agree it’s a softer and slower song (political better then weak😉), but let’s be realistic, also nice for the band and the crowd to have a little rest, it can’t be Speedy Gonzalez all the way. For me also a first time listen and yes not all songs can be 9.x, but boy oh boy did I like how her voice worked out in this song…..🤘

  • @alekhidell
    @alekhidell Před rokem +3

Fair enough. I understand that the band has set the bar so high that any deviation is (technically) weaker. But I think the way you make your point made the message worse than it actually was. It never grabbed me the first few times I heard it. But, and as some others have said, it’s a song written for a reason, and one reason is that Asami sang jazz before she ever heard of metal. I think it only fair that she gets her chance to indulge. The other is to lighten the mood in a concert that includes a lot of heavy and fast music. Asami was having fun and it showed. Fun is good. It’s now become a song that I consider equal to everything else they’ve done, in it’s own way. How many bands can play such a variety of genres and make them work as well as they do?

I have always enjoyed Dancing With The Devil. As others have commented, it is a different song from them as much as Lovebites can't be tied down to one metal genre as such. For me, it is a great sight to see the Lovebites showing some dance moves and even Miyako sways her hips and has her foot up on the monitor more than usual. I accept they are not busting out dance moves but for your love of stage presence and entertainment, I thought a slightly higher score and acknowledgement that the ladies were more animated than usual, would of been in order.

No complaint from me about the score. Thinking about it, this might also be their "weakest" song for me, yet still I'd rate it somewhere between 7.5 and 8, so it's not a song I find boring or even dislike. Considering that my favourite metal subgenre is Thrash Metal and that I otherwise don't care about Hard Rock (which is what I'd label this song) at all, this says a lot about the qualities of Lovebites! And even though R&B is not my cup of tea, I like what Asami did with her voice in this song resp. this performance in particular. It made the song more interesting for me.

And even though I predicted your reaction quite accurately, you still surprised me a bit, because if I were to rate this song, my rating would be lower, although I still wouldn't go below 7.0 - with all my respect for this band. And why do I think that? It's quite simple - these wonderful girls have set the bar very high for themselves. And very well - they know their worth. But - if someone is the world champion in the high jump and sets the bar high for themselves, does that mean they will always beat it? No, sometimes he will knock it down - but most of his competitors will knock it down every time. It's the same here - I don't know of a band that creates great hits only - but I know of many bands and performers who are famous because they only created one hit, and still everyone remembers them and talks about them. Well that's how it works - looking from Lovebites perspective - it's their weaker song (for me). But for many, many bands this song would be the pinnacle of their ability.... So - point of view depends on where you sit!

It's still a great song, but it didn't knock me off my feet, and 'Epilogue' - even though it's so different to what we usually hear from the Lovebites - did that. And that's just it.

I think it's always difficult to react to songs that have been plucked individually out of a concert . The context , position in the playlist etc is lost . It's difficult for any band to play an entire gig at the tempo of the majority of Lovebites songs - for one thing Haruna would probably have a heart attack , God forbid , and Midori and Miyako's arms would drop off . Any reaction is subjective especially when a song is different from a band's normal output and your score is fair IMHO - it's not my favourite Lovebites song either but when the bar is set so high there are going to be songs which are better than others - this is one of the others !

Not every song can be a masterpiece, but I do think Miyako was rocking out on this particular song more than the rest of the concert combined - speaking of which, with (if I remember correctly) Signs of Deliverance coming up next month (and I assume already filmed), I think this means you've pretty much seen the entire Zepp Diver City concert now (there might be a couple songs you saw the music video instead of the Diver City version, but I think you've reacted to pretty much every song they played at the concert) - so you might as well get the DVD or BluRay and enjoy the whole show in its entirety now :)

@@GrayFox14 Sorry if my sentence was poorly constructed, the comments about Miyako were unrelated thoughts relative the first half of the sentence. By rocking out, I meant she was being more animated on stage, moving around, etc. I guess I linked the thoughts together as maybe a more animated performance by the usually more reserved Miyako was good even if he was mildly underwhelmed by the song itself.

I totally get why you gave it that score, but I still dig the score. Love the lyrics and personality that come through in this song, and that it signifies support for Midori as a songwriter. the fact that it's not as complex a tune as the ones Miyako writes is ok: it's a change of pace and that is why Miyako is a genius that few others can ever hope to achieve. Miyako and her genius are the reasons I think Lovebites is (possibly) the greatest band in the world, but this song is the reason my heart loves them so much, if that makes sense. But it's all good; I appreciate and understand your review!

Honestly that's a very very kind score for this song. Let's ask people this, if everyone that knows this band closes their eyes and pretend this is the first time they heard lovebites, would they even call this song more than "decent"? This is definitely, and by a landslide, their weakest song(and performance) for me. Not every song can be "the best", if people get mad over this simple fact, which is honestly nothing to get butthurt about, well it's their problem. 🤘

I cant say its a bad preformance, because of Asami...but overall...as I wrote myself, she is the one saving it. Interesting what you say...about closing eyes. If I never heard about Lovebites and heard this on radio, I would never looked for more songs. Not the impressive metal compositions (faster or slower) they can play and not a genre/sound I normally care about. Same with Spellbound, since I more or less hate 80s "synth metal". And same here, the live performance good, because its fun to watch

Compare it to any of their latest songs and their there is no debate. Love the MC match, MC wish they could ever of been this good. David, you need to enlighten some followers, maybe Hendrix Hey Joe at Monterey 1967, or Cream or or be even Alvin Lee at Woodstock, I'm, Going Home, just to show how much and how far music has come and that great musicianship has always been around to appreciate.

What really puts me off is that in early times I think Midory played an FRX, I guess. Then very prominent I only saw her playing an ESP E-II FR QM RDB or STLBK for dropped D, later customized with golden gear, all in all very little exceptoins to the E-II. I only know two exceptions, an Arrow for show purpose and an acoustic when needed. Switching guitars for Miyako is normal for me for Midori her guitars are signature. It really puts me off for no reason. For the sound or the tone, can anybody tell me why? Also with the Kemper you can alter so much, the ESP has a huge capacitor with a straight tone. You could emulate a wobble of small caps when needed. Is it for show purpoase only? Am I too picky? Am I too "whatever"? I just want to knwo why. Can anybody tell me?

I mean it is an "ok" song, but it is not what you are used to seeing from Lovebites. They simply have no fillers in their albums. THIS is the lowest one, and even this one is a 7.7 song, which tells a lot about the quality they produce.
