  • Today, Tom and Dominic are in 16th century Calvinist Geneva, where Michael Servetus is being condemned for heresy. Execution, imprisonment, treachery and public burnings all feature in this story which bears unusual similarities to the times we live in today…

Brilliant podcast. Tom's right, theology and how it has shaped mankind historically is definitely overlooked. I applaud his insight into these matters. A cut above the rest!

Interesting discussion on the virtues and cost of control against the virtues and cost of freedom. Parallels with places in the world today such as central America where authoritarianism has wiped out crime.

Good points. Particularly the one about how Calvin's gang had a streak of genuine humility while the American campus activists do not bother with such trifles.

I'd like to mention that the Netherlands is also heavily influenced by Calvin. Oh never mind you do mention it.

🤣🤣🤣 As is Scotland, much to the chagrin of Irish catholics that invited themselves to Scotland & then didnae like the way we were. Strange but shite!

Another great show. The misery these appalling ‘false prophets’ have inflicted on others down the centuries and continue to do so. ( religious nuts not historians! 😂)…..I am fascinated though by the Reformation and all the weirdo sects that sprang up both pre and post such as the Lollards, Hussites, Moravian church etc. I find the concept of the predestination hilarious : the Protestant reading of Romans 8 28-30 that only a predetermined set of people will be ‘saved’ . This was just a great way of stopping the Catholics flogging indulgences….. 😅
Looking forward to shows on the Cathars, Monmonth Rebellion, Indian Mutiny….. 👍
