I don’t like cheap plastic toys, so when my kids were little I always had a make and take for a party favor. I made cute containers to contain the supplies or to carry the completed craft---stamped muslin bags or gift boxes. But the activity/party favor combo not only killed two birds with one stone, it also made it so any leftover supplies were just added to my stash.
Those favors were big hits with parents and kids alike. And I know that they lasted. The discovery bottles were especially long lived. I know one kid still had hers when she graduated high school. Doubt she took it to college with her. I saved fancy water bottles for that one.
I kept my kids parties small both to not spend so much and so that they were manageable. My kids’ parties were a crafty opportunity for me. I always worked it so decorations turned into scrapbook embellishments. Their party scrapbooks also made it easy for me to keep a record of the crafts and food I made.
One of the biggest hits in the sense that my kids and their friends still bring it up is liquid watercolor and spray bottles. The kids had so much fun spraying butcher paper. And kids love coloring both snow and sand with the sprays. I used Blick’s concentrated watercolors but I think unsweetened Kool-Aid would also work. I no longer live in snow country so colored snow isn’t a possibility anymore. Shame because, tie dyed looking snowmen are a blast. 🌈 ⛄️ 💥

Awesome card! You definitely checked all the boxes for Peanuts card wish list. Can’t believe he’s 11 already! I totally understand your feeling about the end of the party. My son turned 40 and we had a party for him. There were about 45 people there and it was nice to see everyone and meet his friends and co workers but after most of the guests left, I enjoyed visiting with my cousins, who were gracious enough to let us have the party at their place.
One of my 3 dil does the Gift Bags; the one who emulates her, kinda, sorta does them, 1/2 the time. It's a lovely, can be costly, but fun for the kiddos, thing.❤🎉. DARLING, masculine, very automotive, birthday card!

Love the card! Great job on the shaker! Theme parties, I had so much fun with my son's theme bday parties. I would make the invites, the cake (the exploding volcano was my favorite) and tshirts with iron-ons I would design. We stopped having the big extended family party after his 21st bday (he's 23 now). Having said all this, guess what I found last summer while cleaning the garage... the bin I would dump the leftover party flavors in. Lots of memories.

Wow! You’d have an easier time if you did Victoria, Australia, plates. The numbers and frame are blue, kind of B26, with a white background. I guess that truck’s popularity is one of the reason Honeybee does their lovely layers sets these days. I’ve tussled with whether I want those balloon number dies and realise that, yes, that would be awesome. I keep saying I’ll stop buying craft supplies then the next thing I know I’m putting in an order for way too much yet again!
When my kids were little I made cakes. The last really elaborate cake I made was a Thomas the Tank Engine. I struggled with that cake and was amazed to find later that I had black icing above the splashback and right down to the floor. That was my last straw. That year I took that cake to school for my son’s class (he was 4 and in prep) and I ordered a cake for this party that was also Thomas.
I never did the gift bags although there was pressure to do so. I struggled to pay for a party let alone extras. We did a mixture of parties and events. Like, for example, one year we took one of my son’s friends to the Antarctic Exhibition, had a nice meal and bought presents. Even that cost too much but I was prepared to go without. And also, that year I was grateful I didn’t have a party planned: my son woke up about 6:30am and burst into tears. He was sick, running a fever. But because it was a small thing, only invited 2 or 3 friends, it was ok. Sadly only 1 made it to the delayed event but it was good.
I did other things with cakes that were creative but not nearly so hard. Like I made a few layers of normal cake, cut a hole in the center, pushed a Barbie doll into the centre so the cake turned into a full skirt that I iced and added sprinkles to, to go with the bridal veil. Another cake for my son was a marble cake (made normal cake mix, split it into 3 bowls, added 3 different food colouring dyes, then put the mixture bit by bit into the pan so the cake looked bright and marbled when cut). And I bought some Star Wars prequel little toys, like the space ships/fighter jet type things, creatures etc, and put some on the cake and others suspended over the cake with skewers. I’m a lousy cake decorator, couldn’t make an iced flower to save myself, but a bit of creativity not requiring that skill set worked wonders.
And, when the kids got older, I bought cakes. I think the first time I bought a cake was for my daughter’s 13th birthday. On her 12th birthday my son had emergency surgery so she went to stay with friends. She had 3 cakes that year and lots of spoiling but what she remembers is “losing” her birthday to her brother who spent a good chunk of that year in and out of hospital. So the next year I let her have a slumber party and bought a cake. I asked for something that was a bit like a bridal cake but only one layer, so it had coloured icing flowers etc. And she enjoyed that party.
That cake led to me buying mud cakes and having appropriate decorations. Then one year we had an edible Balrog on a mud cake for my son. He loved it and was adorable: he didn’t want to cut it but he did want to eat it. The conflict was hilarious. By that stage birthdays were more “events” - a trip to the cinema, an outing of their choice - and a meal. I found although we were more comfortable financially at that stage, the expectations around parties were horrendous. So, ironically, we had LANs - local area network parties - with teenagers camping out for 2 nights but not usually as a PARTY. And much more often than anyone has a right to a birthday party!!! 😀😀😀😀
