    Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
    At 10:00, instead of dropdown menu and complex codes in multiple layers, you could use blend effect.
    So if you have 2 layers Layer A and Layer B, make both 3d and apply BLEND effect on the Layer A. In the "Blend with Layer" dropdown, select Layer B and select "Effects and Masks". The in the "Blend with Original", apply the code
    toCompVec([0, 0, 1])[2] > 0 ? value : 0
    You can now hide the Layer B. Get a camera, and whenever you move the camera you will see the other side of the layer as Layer B.
    Edited: I think Blend method will work only if we stay on the same comp. But because we are taking the whole comp into a new comp and make it continuous rasterized, blend effect may not work.

    As a fellow Overlord user, I can attest to this man's dedication to his tutorials. Because once you taste the Overlord Ai to AE workflow, it's hard to go back to ye olde AI import.

      @ECAbrams  Před rokem +3

      Lol. This is too true. Just about every Ai to Ae task is made better with Overlord. I should say the one case where I still import the Ai layers in my regular workflow is in highly complex pieces that break into very few layers for animation (complex brushes, gradients, etc.). But if it needs to be discrete parts it has to be Overlord. The heart hero element here is the perfect use case where Overlord would have been the better move.

    10:10 Instead of tricking with the "dropdown menu" effect opacity with back/front card, why not push the back by 1 pixel in Z axe then link it to the front ?
    ... 3d front will comes in front of the back ? 🤔
    "Dropdown menu" effect seems to be effective when you have more than 2 layer to play with.
    When i have the recto/verso situation, i rather play with opacity expression : Pickwick 1 opacity to the other, then ad to the expression " *-1+100 ". Then you can play with keyframes 0-100 with one, the other will automatically go 100-0 😘👍🏻

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams  Před rokem +1

      As to the z depth offset, in this case, because we're using collapsed transformations, you may find that less than satisfactory. Pushing the back layer back and the front layer ahead will actually place the "card back" layer inside the space of the "card deep" layer as we've called them in this project. You when viewed from the back, or front, all elements will still be visible. This is why a solution needed to be explored. If this card was only two flat layers, that z-space offset does work perfectly well.
      That is a lovely alternative for opacity, and a great choice for crossfades. As you see later in the video, we extend the technique to accommodate 3 card states, which is one reason I did not opt for an opacity link between layers. A fuller version of this technique would even account for 4 states: flat front, flat back, deep front and deep back. And generally, unless I have a need for the in-between values, or I'm crossfading between the layers, I tend to use a checkbox or hold keyframes anyway to simplify inputs. So I wasn't gaining much with the interlink between the opacity of a pair of layers, and it fell short when extending the concept. If it works best for you, enjoy. But in this case, that method was explored and replaced with the dropdown menu.

    if you wanted to automate the swapping from front to back you could make 2 planes a black and a white, track them to the card so they follow the flipping motion, then offset the to planes form each other by 1 so it has a black and white side, then use it as a luma mat for the front and back comps. That way they can swap automatically. I hadn't thought of using track mattes like this before thanks you for the inspiration, and also hadn't heard about the menu effect before very interesting. :)

    Amazing tutorial, I didn't know about the menu dropdown control, was looking for something like that. Thanks!
    Do you think it makes sense to make the change from back to front of the card automatically, using expressions tied to the rotation value of the card?

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams  Před rokem +2

      It could, but depending on the forms of rotation you use, your milage may vary. For example, if you're using xRotation to flip for a range facing away, but then yRotation brings the other face around like in a tumbling action. Or if Orientation gets in the mix. A more reliable solution might be to use the lookAt() or a vector between camera and card face to compare the angle across all axes at once? Short answer, it was too complex to explore for this tutorial.

    Also, for some reason, it changes the scale of the back version 🤷🏽‍♀️
    It is bigger than the front and while it doesn't make a noticeable difference when I'm animating one card, if I add several side by side we can see it.
    I figured I ask in case it's an obvious solution (collapse transformations gives me more trouble than not). But it might just be a start over situation. Turn it off and turn it back on does magic sometimes

    I have a huge question that I cannot find a solid answer for.
    So, I create lyric videos and syncing is so tedious. So I'm curious.
    I created a JSON file that has text data of each line of text for the song and each line has a start and end time data.
    Example: {"line":"I WISH SOMETHING’S IN MY LIFE WOULD GO BACK","start":0.225058,"end":3.158623}
    I know AfterEffects can import JSON files and you link the data between the two.
    I'm trying to find a script or something that could make the syncing process faster.
    Maybe you know where I should look or maybe know an answer?
    If I cant find a solution I would love to talk about maybe writing a script for syncing lyrics to a song.

      If you're toggling a layer to be 3d, or back to 2d by checking that little box on the layer, you may notice it has moved away from where your composition view is looking or is no longer visible because 3d layers are rendered in world order and 2d layers are rendered in layer order. So a layer can suddenly be above or below another and hidden because it's 2d or 3d. Does that help?

      @@ECAbrams Thank you so much for your speedy reply. I understand the need for "revenue"!
      Animating the text is not a problem, it's putting the text in equation form, say, c = sqrt a^2 + b^2 and having the sqrt show over both terms, as well as other more involved equations. Trying to use the "symbol" text is just too painful, plus there is no sqrt in there anyway.
      So I was wondering if there was a way to use the math. ( ) thing to show the equation on screen, or something like it? Many thanks for you time even if it's not possible to do it.
      Thank you for the link.

    • @ECAbrams
      @ECAbrams  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@Redserpent2000 Maybe I can shed some light on how that might work.
      For things like exponents, we would use superscript. But, yes, there isn't a great way to format text layers into the blend of glyphs and lines that make up the notation of maths. Most likely, a workflow would require creating the assets in Illustrator where numbers and symbols can be more easily worked into the right forms from their paths. Then it's a matter of breaking apart and animating that Ai file as we would any other vector assets. Which is sadly not much for time savings until we deploy some 3rd party plugins to automate large groups of layers.
      The Javascript math.method() in expressions wouldn't really be a great fit, unfortunately. They are math objects and methods that will compute results in expressions, but they won't display the form and structure of an equation for us.
      Hopefully, that helps get you on the right track to a worthwhile workflow!
