  • At the END OF THIS VIDEO we talk about our upcoming 960 Ah Lithionics Brand lithium battery upgrade project. We will replace our OEM Magnum Inverter and Outback Solar Charge Controller with all new Victron equipment. Consider subscribing so you don't miss out on future video episodes on this awesome system change!
NIRVC provided the Ceramic Coating to Sue & Mark in exchange for us producing this video. We used our Motorhome as the platform to allow us the opportunity to capture the Paint Correction & Ceramic Application Process on film. This is how we were able to produce this episode for you to decide if Ceramic Coating is for you!
Our 10 year old Newmar Dutch Star Motorhome has been our magical carpet in retirement. We decided to "Revive!" our paint job with a multi-step paint correction procedure. This cleaning and buffing of our paint took days, inside a climate & environmentally controlled shop. It was performed by Mike, one of the actual body shop painters! Once the color and shine was restored, we decided to preserve it by having the Xpel Fusion Plus Ceramic Coating applied. Come along with us in this episode and see what's all involved from START to FINISH!
The package used for OUR PARTICULAR COACH, IN THE PARTICULAR CONDITION it was demonstrated to be in this video, was the "Platinum Protect" package for "used" coaches. It was $6300 + tax as of 10-20-2023 on our 10 year old paint job. Your mileage will vary,..... Every coach "may" have a slightly different story! Call the NIRVC location nearest to you to get the pricing on their Silver, Gold and Platinum Ceramic Protection Plans!

When comparing the various ceramic products, how the paint surface should be prepared for each, the install procedure required for a particular coating, and ultimately the pricing, there is a lot to consider.
The main thing that you need to keep in mind is preparation is the key to success! Ensuring the paint is free of defects that will ultimately impact the coating is critical to ensuring you are getting the total value and expectation of the product performance after so much effort has been put into it.
NIRVC spent a great deal of time under proper lighting conditions examining the paint, and thoroughly ensuring the coach was properly prepped for the ceramic coating. For most folks, you must make all paint corrections BEFORE the installation of the ceramic. If the paint has a minor chips or swirl marks, it must be repaired or removed BEFORE the coating can be installed to ensure the integrity of the ceramic coating. NIRVC spent about 40 hours prepping our coach for Ceramic coating. This time was for compounding and polishing only! WE CHOSE NOT fix any chips or scratches, to keep the cost down! WE CHOSE TO ACCEPT that we would possibly see those defects “ better” after the coating. We expected that the rest of the coach would look so much better, that WE WOULDN'T CARE!
When they installed the Ceramic Coating, it was done by painstaking hand application, not machine or sprayers. They apply Xpel Fusion Plus Ceramic Coating by hand on every inch of your coach, including all the glass, head and tail lights, windshield, and all windows.
All of the NIRVC locations have the luxury of huge shops to work in. This allows a clean environment with great lighting to see all imperfections. Your RV will stay inside while the coating is drying, and if it is raining half way through the process it will be of no consequence. Your rig must stay dry for 24 hours after application for the curing process to finish.
NIRVC has factory trained certified installers of the Xpel Fusion Plus product. They understand the process that must be followed, and the pitfalls of not ensuring a proper bond to a clean surface. When you are looking at a 45’ motorcoach, there is no room for cutting corners on any of the countless things that have to go correct during the entire, multi-day process!
The package used for OUR PARTICULAR COACH, IN THE PARTICULAR CONDITION IT WAS IN was the "Platinum Protect" job we had done on our used coach. It was $6300 + tax as of 10-20-2023

No tire shine or wheel polish? Oh, the humanity! Lol. I would have too with $6300 on tab!
I've got a bad back, but I I've got one of those creepers that converts to a nicely padded wheeled stool, I get my disposable gloves on, and for unfinished aluminum wheels, use either wadding polish, Mother's, or Simichrome, and just slowly work my way around the vehicle. Don't even do them all at once sometimes. It's very satisfying, like the paint correction is.
Seriously though, great call on the paint correction. It's such a gradual development in spidering, light scratches, and overall dulling. You don't just look at it one day and suddenly it looks old, and like Sue said, it looked great with just the wash. But wow, the improvement is absolutely amazing! You've essentially "reset" your paint to Day 1 now that you have it, not just looking showroom new (probably shinier!), but is well protected. Now all you need to do is to wash it, or have it washed with care, de-ionized water, no brushes (Mark, I know you already know all of this), clean mitts, horsehair brushes, etc., and you end up with a spotless finish (I like using a blower). And then yearly boosters to maintain the ceramic. At least that's how I do it.
I bought a Harbor Freight Da buffer and have done two of my vehicles. No, I would not tackle a 45' motorhome!

Sorry for the late comment, we are crushing the Caribbean with the AIM Club wish you were here.. yes doing some type of paint coating is a must. Paint correction and scratches being addressed is the most labor cost. We have talked about what coating I use and either one work to protect the paint. You will find that a good rain will rinse off 90% of the dirt on the coach. When it is time to wash Myles using a foam cannon attachment to a pressure washer you will remove 97% of dirt and road grime. Basically, nothing sticks to both type coatings. If deionized water is used during the rinsing off of the foamed soap. Then Air drying can happen with no water spots. Basically your rinse water will slide off the side of the coach like a waterfall nothing sticks. Another great video, helping us all understand different RV processes. Travel safe my friends.

Great video and looks like a new motorhome. It seems that when I've done upgrades to my motorhome, and like all of us, I decide to go with a different motorhome, I never get the cost of those upgrades when I go to trade or sell. Food for thought.

The package used for OUR PARTICULAR COACH, IN THE PARTICULAR CONDITION IT WAS IN was the "Platinum Protect" job we had done on our used coach. It was $6300 + tax as of 10-20-2023 on our 10 year old paint job. Your mileage will vary,..... Every coach "may" have a slightly different story!
Depends on how much paint correction work gets done. As we stated in the video, we did not fix anything! We just had the paint compounded and polished, then sealed with Ceramic. Mike worked about 40 hours TOTAL on the coach. The important thing is working undercover, out of the elements and in the right temperature. Cost will vary greatly from coach to coach, and is quoted once the body shop can lay eyes on your rig. If you watched the entire video, based on the condition you saw our rig in, we had about 30 hours worth of buffing and paint correction, and the Ceramic Coating was based on 43 feet times whatever the current rate is.

This makes me glad I put myself through college detailing cars at Canyon auto body some 39 years ago. I had 500 + cars on my ledger when I moved on to be an engineer. I still polish and seal my cars myself. A motor home of that size would probably take me 3 or 4 full days of work. So now I would probably just pay the 6 or 7 hundred to have it done. Getting ready to retire and we are shopping for an older Oregon build, like a 2007 country coach Magna or intrigue.

Mark, Did you have any paint checking at all in the dark and maroon colors on your coach prior to having any work done to the paint?

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  Před 7 měsíci +1

I don't honestly think so! The diamond shield in the front has seen better days, but that cracking and checking wasn't in the paint, it was the shield.

    • @MonacoMike
      @MonacoMike Před 7 měsíci

The front and rear end caps usually don't have a paint checking problem. It normally shows up in the side walls. The problem is with the poor quality of sidewall panels produced where the fiberglass out gassed and caused very fine cracks (checking) in the paint. It predominately shows up in the darker colors where the sun causes those areas to heat up more. I have it my ''05 Monaco Exec and there's really nothing you can do about it unfortunately. It shows up in many brands of coaches. I thought about ceramic coating and even repainting but I know it would just be a waste of money. Your coach looks great. I also love the polished SS panels you had put on.

    • @OurJourneyInMyles

I view the ceramic process this way: My paint job is 11 years old. I wanted to make certain to give it the best care that I can in the twilight of the rig's life!
I paid to have all the compounding done by someone who knows the danger of burning in some marks into the paint. The body shop guy knew what he could expect and do to the paint job in front of him.
They were thorough and consistent. All the swirls were removed, and are still gone.
The ceramic “locks in” and preserves “as best as you can expect” the renewed surface. We both understand the Ceramic Coating 9H hardness has many advantages, but is only molecules thick and is not super-human. Yes, the dirt will stick way less, will clean better in rain and will wash up way better.
From this point forward, it is up to me to NEVER hire anyone that will put those swirl marks back in the finish! The only people that understand how to wash these rigs right are the folks that own them and have to pay the price to correct them when damaged!
In April 2024 is the first time I had it washed since it was applied in November at NIRVC to have the ceramic boost process done for $400 total. I will most likely NEVER have it washed again by the campsite crews. And I will certainly NEVER go to a Blue Beacon again.

The package used for OUR PARTICULAR COACH, IN THE PARTICULAR CONDITION IT WAS IN was the "Platinum Protect" job we had done on our used coach. It was $6300 + tax as of 10-20-2023
When comparing the various ceramic products, how the paint surface should be prepared for each, the install procedure required for a particular coating, and ultimately the pricing, there is a lot to consider.
