    Brilliant trick in putting the tape around the duct and then pulling the backing off, exactly the problem I was trying to solve!

      Yeah that tape sticks to everything! That trick seemed to work reasonably well. Thanks for your comment!
      Cheers!

      Except that the video cuts out right when the backing is peeled off, and were the guy to just pull it, it'd pull the tape from behind the pipe. That trick needs more steps: first put the still backed tape around the pipe, then pull a bit of backing off, STICK the tape to the pipe, and then pull the rest of the backing behind the pipe... somehow. With a wire or a bit of plain transparent tape, maybe, dunno.

    if you ever need to remove or move the duct work, is the foil tape easy to remove?

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  Před 5 lety

      You can remove it and you can cut it by the seam but it's not "easily" removed. I would tape it anyway because you lose so much heat through the gaps.
      Thanks for your question!
      Cheers!

    The tape works really well on brand new ductwork but what can you use on old ductwork? My experience is it will not stick on old stuff.

      Just try to clean all the dirt off the ducts as much as possible. This house is from 1984 and I had no issues. Good Luck!

    Does the foil tape adhere to wood. I have gaps between my return ducts and the floor joists. They use the cavity in my floor joists as a return conduit.

    Does this tape really stick well?.., and what should i use to clean the ductwork first, so it sticks well?

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes it's amazing! Just clean off the dust with a damp rag, let it dry and put on the tape. Good Luck!

      If you have good ventilation, you can use alcohol on a rag. This will help remove oil residue from previous installer's hands.

    Is this the same kind of tape as the dryer tape? Can I use the dryer tape?

  • @raczyk

    what about using mastic instead? Ain't that better and more permanent?

      You mean that stuff you fill nail holes with? You can use aluminum tape or there is another product used by the pros that you brush on. I like the tape because it bridges the large gaps from the sloppy workmanship of the contractors. Buy the big roll because you will use lots!
      Cheers!

    Could this type of tape be used in a muffler

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  Před 4 lety +1

      Mufflers are relatively inexpensive and relatively easy to replace. If you can't do it yourself, shop around the smaller shops and get it done properly. JB weld, tape and tin cans with clamps are a waste of time and ineffective.
      Good Luck!

    Does this tape have very good adhesive?

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  Před rokem

      Yes but you will want to remove all the dust from the outside of the ducts.

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin

      Aluminum foil tape is available in there HVAC section of your local home improvement store. I don't have the part # or brand name.

      @@robsgaragewoodworkin ok, I had bought some at Lowes but it is not as heavy a tape as what was on my system when it was installed. I was hoping for a lead on the heavy tape. I've called a couple HVAC suppliers but they don't want to sell to anyone but their installers. Thanks for the reply.

      Rob's Garage Woodworking you make a video and show how to use tape but you don’t know the name of the tape? You are special kinda’ stupid.

      I can't tell you what he's using but I use Nashua 324A tape. It's UL listed and sticks like the devil. In fact aside from duct work, it's been holding the tail lights into my truck for the last 7 years.

    You want a cold basement? I keep mine heated and spend a significant amount of time in the basement.

    • @robsgaragewoodworkin
      @robsgaragewoodworkin  Před 6 lety +5

      LOL! That's how much heat leakage there was in the ducts. When I taped up all the gaps and holes the basement temperature of my bungalow decreased by 5*C. That made the basement the correct temperature Vs. the main floor. Because of all the leakage the basement would be warmer than the upstairs. After the airflow was going to it's correct destination we were far more comfortable everywhere in the house.
      Cheers!

    Will this tape stick to drywall? I need to seal where the vent sticks out did the drywall and there’s a gap between the drywall and vent.
