  • Heinkel He-111 is probably the most recognizable WWII medium bomber. Initially presented as an airliner, it soon saw combat in the Spanish Civil War. Here are five things about it that you probably didn't know.

      If I remember correctly, at first, France had refused to be flown over by the largest formation of German aircraft seen since the Second World War. But it was ridiculous, these were demilitarized planes that were being moved from Spain to Britain for the movie...

Just as you mentioned, China purchased 10 Henkel He111As from Germany to fight against Japanese in Shanghai area. Four were sent to bomb the Japanese fleet in the Yangtze River. Japanese interceptors showed up. The Heinkels could have fled away but they decided to shoot back. With the gun buckets lowered, they were slow and three were shot down eventually.

    So dad, you shot down 12 planes! Did you fly a 109 or 190? You flew WHAT?! Amazing, that is one of the best stories never told. Had that crew been allied there would be dozens of books, and a couple of Hollywood films about them. Imagine what stunning talent those gunners had. The 111 only carried single 7.92 mm MG's in each position. Only 1/2 positions could engage a target in any particular direction. So they took down 12 huge enemy bombers with a handful of rifle calibre bullets. Those 111 MG's carried ammo in drums (75) I think. Oh... and they did it IN THE DARK!
    PS. Looked it up and the 111's may have been heavily upgunned with 5 20 mm cannon and 4 fixed forward MG's.

    Nowadays we’re all used to watching various cruise missiles being launched by aircraft but the He111 goes down in history as the first aircraft to air-launch the original cruise missile ~ the V1. This version was put into use as a way of launching the V1 to targets outside the reach of the ground-launch sites especially once the allies overran V1 launch sites as the western front advanced.

    Questions for people that play War Thunder:
    1) Can I play with a friend in our private server?
    2) Can we play Co-op PvE?
    3) Can I make my own missions and maps, in a mission Editor?

    • @showtime112

      1) Yes 2) Not sure, I haven't tried something like that 3) You can make missions with the CDK editor which is a bit complicated but you figure it out in time. You can also use custom battles option which is much simpler but limited. However you need to play online PvP battles to unlock airplanes. You can buy premium ones. Initially, you only get the initial level planes such as Gladiator, P-26 or I-15.

      I think it was probably too small for it. Germany had some four engine bombers but they were never produced in large numbers.

    • @animaltvi9515
      @animaltvi9515 Před rokem

      There was , sort of the He116. But unit wasn't used in the military. At the time Germany didn't need long-range bombers it preferred smaller faster one. They only really started looking into long-range for the America bomber. As for a 4 engined He111 that would have taken a big redesign and heinkel were working on the 4 engined He177 . But the less said about that the better.

    • @davidpope3943
      @davidpope3943 Před rokem

      Well, although there was never a 4 engined version of the He111, there was a FIVE engined version ~ the He111 Zwilling (‘Twins’)~ which was basically 2 He111 joined together by a new centre wing section which mounted the extra engine. This monstrosity was built specifically to tow the Me321 heavy glider, itself later upgraded into the 6 engined Me323 Gigant.
      Incidentally, the Zwilling was a huge improvement as a method of towing the Me321, which had previously been towed by a formation of three, yes, THREE Me110 fighters, whose pilots really earned their pay for such a dangerous task.

    I have a soft spot for the He - 111, not as dynamic as other bombers like the Ju - 88 , but a real workhorse not dissimilar to the British Wellington (Wimpy) ,the 111 had beautifull curved lines and those large thick wings could absorb quite a bit of rifle caliber machinegun fire,ok she was relatively slow,but could lift a hefty weight,and the slowish and steady platform made her exell at launching torpedos.
