  • 5Ds is such a fun Yugioh show to watch, and mine and many people's favorite arcs is the Dark Signers arc. For my orange Pride Month analysis video (yes I know it's July, I've been very slow getting these out), I decided to talk about my favorite Dark Signer, Carly Carmine, going over her arc in the show and why I believe her to be the universal favorite Dark Signer of most people.
Shout out to my friend Rerewinding for the awesome thumbnail and end screen

Apparently the writers of the first two seasons of 5Ds didn't return after the Dark Signers arc, that's why the writing took a nose dive and Carly went from the women Jack literally said he was in love with and fought tooth and nail to save...into another one of his groupies.

Carly and her story was a big part of what made 5ds for me. I was breathtaken

I'd say we *had* a competent romance in Yu-Gi-Oh with Jack and Carly. Then they retconned it away with the subsequent seasons....
(Ugh, after the Dark Signers arc ends, the only episodes I really enjoyed were Kiryu's redemption in the Crash Town arc).

I actually believe that Kiryu was one of the best dark signers in the show due to his connection between Jack, Crow and Yusei. He also had a really dark moment in the show being starved to death by the facility he got thrown in and also the fact that his deck is really popular among fans. In addition, his appearance later in the Crashtown arc basically made his character a bit more solid... BUT I was disappointed that he was never further utilized.
My only negative with Carly's character in 5Ds is POST Dark Signer arc which I did feel like in the beginning until the actual WRGP, they were going around in different directions and I believe that is related to the cult issues they had behind the scenes. Carly's character was downgraded due to her voice actress being involved and her role shrunk massively. HOWEVER, if none of those things happened with the Cult, then I think Carly could of grown even further.
But you outlined everything in this video on why Carly is so great as both a character and a Dark Signer (at least until the end of arc). The Dark Signer arc is hands down one of the best Arc's in Yugioh History and gave us some of the best characters we've got like Kiryu, The Goodwin Brothers, Misty and like your video explains, Carly. I didn't realize how much of an arc Carly had and it was throughout one arc and that is top tier. And because of this video outlining it, you've successfully changed my mind. F@#k it, if Carly wasn't shafted in Season 2 of 5Ds, I actually think she could of been ALOT better Girl Character than Aki.

EH I feel Carly's is darker, Kiryu went off the deep end when he was still alive and while starving to death was harsh, it wasn't like he was innocent. Carly was just a normal person trying to help someone she cared about, captured by a deranged cult leader and blasted out of a fifty story building, her last thoughts begging for help that would never come.
Also the fact even the Japanese version censored it to where her body is perfectly intact despite falling from a distance that should've splattered her.

You know, I still remember the first time I watched Carly's transition to a Dark Signer. I was watching anime (the sub) before bed, and said I was on my last episode of the evening. It ends with Carly's loss to Sayer, and her falling out of the building. I say to myself "ok, I lied. One more episode. I gotta find out how she survives." The next episode begins with her hitting the ground so hard there's that impact crater. So I'm left with my answer "Oh. She isn't..."
And then over the course of 5Ds we see in Crash Town Sergio (Jordan) dies by falling to his death. Later, Bruno dies by black hole. I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting one or two instances, but I started joking to myself that the main villain of 5Ds is gravity. Because it definitely has the highest body count.

Oh! Greiger/Bomber's end by giant spider thread around the neck as he falls - that was another gravity body count.
